He gripped her arms, knowing it was vital, no, imperative, he
was unequivocally clear. “I missed what we shared so deeply it was
a physical ache. I couldn’t think straight. When I found the
replica, I yearned for what we shared before you were abducted.”
Seeing he had her undivided attention, he released her arms. Blue
slumped against the wall. “I burn for you Kali. It terrifies me.
Before it was exciting, the thought of having you for my own. Now
it fills me with dread. How much worse would losing you be after
making our dream real? People depend on me to survive. My son
depends on me. I can’t afford to become attached to anything that
owns me so completely, yet every fibre of my being demands I claim
you regardless of risk and consequence.” He exhaled sharply. “You
were gone. I watched your heart stop beating. Had the real you died
that would have been it. I would’ve been destroyed.”

Blue leaned forward and cupped her face. His brow lowered as
he brushed his lips across hers then pressed harder to draw the
taste of her into his mouth. He was overwhelmed by the intensity of
emotion she evoked. Blue broke the kiss and rubbed his thumb over
her reddened flesh, made hot by his embrace.

Speechless, Kali took off his opticals. What did you say to
someone who stripped bare like that? She peered through them and
shuddered. “That these help me to see now is just
awful.”

We can correct your vision with a laser, but your sight will
revert and lose acuity.” Blue shrugged, fighting irritation that
she had not responded to his heartfelt words. “You learn to live
with it.”

She gently placed the frames on the floor, tucking them out of
the way when she remembered what happened to the last pair she’d
removed from him.

Kali stood on the bed.

Blue opened his mouth to protest, but she held up her hand.
“Pause, space ranger, I’m not leaving the bed.”

How many successful seduction attempts had been achieved
dressed in a shapeless top, loose pants, no makeup, and crazy
people hair? Whatever. Kali trawled her fingers through her hair
and let it tumble around her face. Grabbing the hem of the baggy
top, she pulled it over her head.

Blue’s mouth popped open.

He blinked rapidly.

Pleased by his reaction, Kali slipped her hands under the
elastic of the pants and pushed those down until she could kick out
of them.

Blue’s hand fisted the bedding. The other clutched her calf,
the feel of her warm skin a validation she was real and not an
apparition.

Kali straddled his lap. She pressed a kiss to the skin just
below his ear. “I dream shared with you. It was hot. That I could
enjoy you when you were so far away was amazing. Remember how I
like to take victory in the small things? When I blocked my mind
from the Novan a few seconds, or when I gleaned his memories, it
was grimly satisfying.” She rubbed her cheek on his chest; all
smooth and untroubled by the battering the rest of his body had
taken. He smelt good to her. “But I took pure pleasure in feeling
you when I could. The glimpses I caught of you safe were diamonds
in the darkness.”

Blue’s breathing deepened. Yet still, he felt a pang of
disappointment. “That’s all?”

Kali growled, startling them both. She leaned back, so their
eyes met. “You don’t need to worry, Blue. I’m right there in that
special place with you. It’s going to be hard. We will argue. There
will come a time when it feels like pain is the only thing holding
us together. Outside this room is a reality that is cold, and I’m
frightened, but we’ll deal.”

It’s not that simple.”

Blue tried to look away, but Kali held his gaze with hers. His
eyes turned colourless to match hers as she caressed his mind with
her energy.

Killed a lot of people today.” Blue pinched the bridge of his
nose. He looked into the future and saw darkness. “Kali, I don’t
know if I can do this. How am I going to do this?”

With me. I’ll take care of you,” she murmured.

It was said with such quiet sincerity, Blue could do nothing
but believe her. “I should be telling you that.”

We’re in danger, and you need to focus on keeping us safe. We
both do. We’re solid, Blue.” She tapped her chest then his. Her
eyes narrowed with concentration. “Don’t get me wrong, if ever
we’re parted again destroy everything in your path until you hold
me again. You drop whatever you are doing and come save me, right?
Never stop fighting to reach me. You do that, and I promise I’ll
never stop fighting to reach you too.”

Kali rested her forehead on his and felt peace.

Blue ran his hands up her sides, enjoying her softness, fired
up she was naked, and his. His. Illogical as he knew his Hybrid
brethren would find it, would denounce his feelings as a biological
imbalance, Blue felt the same as she. The need burning through him
was more than a physical malady. How else could the need to be with
her, and only her, be explained?

It was primal, his aura coupled with hers. She challenged
everything he deigned to believe in.

His lips curved as Kali stroked his shoulders, and nuzzled her
nose with his.

There was danger, but they’d deal.

Blue flipped Kali and pinned her beneath him, amused she was
too weak to push him over and climb on top like she wanted. Skin to
skin, he decided to learn of his Kali all over again. He lifted one
of her hands and nibbled her fingers, swearing they tasted like
caramel.

She placed her free hand at the nape of his neck and
tugged.

Shut your eyes, beautiful,” he murmured.

Wicked with her feral smile, Kali did so gladly. Blue chuckled
as he lowered his head, and mated his lips with hers.
