“What are you?” she asked.

“We are the djinn, finally released from our gray prison by the goddess of light. Now that we are free, we have gathered our brethren who were trapped on the mortal plain or in hiding. We are here now to serve you, queen and goddess of the djinn. Your wish is our pleasure.”

Djinn
, as in genies in a bottle, wish-granting spirits? Although, given their corporeal forms, she had to wonder at the legends she’d heard. Of more concern than their existence was their presence. What did they want with her?

Michael asked
, “Why have you come, and what do you expect from your queen?” Michael linked his fingers with hers and squeezed them, a reassurance she clung to while outwardly not showing any emotion.

“With you commanding us, we hope to free our home buried in the sands
of Egypt and punish the one who imprisoned us so long ago.”

Cleo couldn’t help it. While she
liked the pleasant quietness of her life, she missed the excitement that came from ruling over a kingdom. She missed power.
I miss being queen.

But, tempting as the offer was, she wouldn’t give up love for prestige. She’d waited too long to find it. Before she could voice her refusal
—even as a part of her screamed this was her chance for glory—Michael spoke.

“As your
queen’s consort and commander of her armies, we accept the charge. Hail the queen!” Michael thumped his chest a half second before the ranks of djinn roared in a cacophony that made her smile.

The Queen of the Nile is back
, and with my consort at my side, an army at my back, and magic at my fingertips, this time I might not stop at just Egypt.
