Another beautiful love story involves the bride's daughter from her previous marriage. Ben King, currently a cattle rancher, and Wendi Moore-James, a pharmacy technician, met at California State University, Stanislaus during the fall semester of 1993. They were friends for several months before they started dating, but after dating for about six months, Wendi's 3-year-old daughter, Cheyenne, began calling Ben "Daddy," completely on her own, without any prompting. When Ben and Wendi were married on September 16, 1995 in Hilmar, California, following their traditional vows, the minister asked Cheyenne, who served as a flower girl and was standing a few feet away, to come stand beside Ben. Then these words were spoken:
Minister: "Ben, do you wish to receive Cheyenne as your daughter?"
Ben: "I do."
Minister: "Do you promise to love her, raise her, guide her, teach her and be a father to her?"
Ben: "I do."
Minister: "Do you have something you would like to give her?"
Ben: "Yes."
