She clucked her tongue, dismissing the notion. “Pish tosh, I’ve never heard something so ridiculous.”
He laughed, “You’re right, I do miss it, I was thinking just last week about finding a men’s league around here—or maybe something else.”
Madison nodded approvingly, and he was happy he’d said the right thing.
Two hours later they had both relaxed enough to find themselves laughing at each other’s foibles and anecdotes. Madison felt tipsy after her second drink and Connor felt a buzz from laughing so much.
“Oh, my God,” Madison looked up at the clock. “It’s almost ten.”
She exhaled deeply.
“You have to go?”
“I have clients that start at five tomorrow,” she cringed just saying it. Normally she didn’t mind but tonight it felt like a true imposition. Connor made a faux cringe in response to hers.
“That’s rough,” he leaned back into his chair and nodded his head at the waiter for the bill. When he brought it over Connor laid down cash and turned back to Madison.
“Can I walk you home?”
Madison looked at him with an unreadable expression. He wished he could take it back; walking her home was too private. She probably didn’t want him to know where she lived.
“You just gave him a two hundred percent tip,” she whispered.
Connor felt his face go red, he was doing it. He was acting out of character. How could he be such an idiot?
Madison gave a little laugh at him shaking her head. She turned and began walking to the door. She didn’t hear him following so she turned back around.
“…and yes, I would love an escort home.”
Relief flooded him! For a moment he thought he’d ruined everything. He opened the door for her on the way out and she blushed, feeling ridiculous to be acting like such a girl.
They walked slowly down the road, letting the night sink in. The change of venue had broken their momentum in conversation and now they were both quiet. Madison walked in the direction of her apartment guiding the way. She hadn’t had someone walk her to the door, or buy her drinks, or laugh at her jokes in a long time. Connor was so handsome, and intelligent, they’d connected right away and it seemed almost impossible that things were so easy between them.
When they were getting close to her apartment she slowed down even more. “I had a really good time tonight.”
“Me too, I was hoping—” he cleared his throat. “I was hoping that I could take you out again…on a proper date.”
“This wasn’t a proper date?”
“You know, one where I pick you up and drive you home.”
She blushed and even in the moonlight he could see the pink rising in her cheeks.
“I would love that.”
“Maybe…”
“Maybe tomorrow?” she said impulsively. Madison didn’t want to rush anything or dive in too quickly but she’d had such a nice night. She could feel herself being drawn into this and she wasn’t the least bit concerned.
“Tomorrow,” his voice rose up and she knew he was happy too. “I’ll pick you up?”
“Same time?”
“Same time.”
They had made it to the front door of her building. She looked so perfect he moved in a few inches, thinking about kissing her. Thinking about her face close to his, feeling her breath mix with his own.
“I look forward to it, Madison S.”
He backed up a few steps not ready to turn away but forcing himself down her walkway. Once she’d walked inside he turned and began his walk back home.
When he’d made it back to Main Street he dialed his brother.
“I think I might need your help.”
“Is it Barbara?” Émeric asked at once interested.
“It is most certainly
not
Barbara. But, I think I’m going to need a car and probably a townhouse just in case. By tomorrow night…”
“Wow, Connor,” his brother’s voice had turned sweetly surprised and Connor rolled his eyes happily. “She must be really something.”
“She is,” he looked back the way he’d come. “As you would say, she just might be the one.”

CHAPTER ONE
When Connor got home from his first meeting with Madison he went straight to work. He needed a car, a house, and clothes. All the things that normal people had in the price range that they would normally have them. Émeric had promised to come over that night to get things moving because Connor was far too nervous about leaving it all to tomorrow to get taken care of. The second thing he did after calling Émeric was call Madeline.
“Mr. Brooks?” Madeline’s voice sounded genuinely concerned and slightly groggy.
“I know it’s late and I know this is uncalled for but I will give you a raise, bonus, car or whatever you’d like if you could only come over and help me with something.”
“Something’s happened? Is it your family? A business deal?”
“Nothing like that that, just come.”
Connor hung up with his assistant. He needed to get to work now. If he’d been smart he would have put their next date off a day or two, but that seemed equally as impossible as the task at hand.
Madeline came first, then Émeric. Connor was pacing back and forth with a romantic comedy on in the background.
“What are you watching?” Émeric said as he came into Connor’s study.
“
Notting Hill,
it’s a movie,” Connor continued to pace but it didn’t really seem that he was watching the film too closely.
“Why are you watching
Notting Hill
?”
“For research, it says right here that Hugh Grant’s character is a ‘normal guy’ I’m doing background research.”
“Holy shit,” Émeric sat into the leather club chair. “You are…you are… who are you?”
“Émeric, I don’t have time for this. I have another date tomorrow night at seven and I have to be ready.”
“Seven in the morning?”
“Of course not,” Connor gave his brother a scathing look.
“Your date isn’t until seven tomorrow evening and you think you need to start preparing to be ‘normal’ now?” Émeric stared at his brother who didn’t even bother to answer.
“Madeline is making us snacks and coffee, she thought it might help.”
“Why is it that you negotiate a five hundred million dollar deal without the slightest murmur of trepidation, but the moment you leave a date with this girl you are thrown into the throes of anxiety?”
“Are you going to help me or sit around narrating what I already know is going on?”
Émeric laughed, “You seriously look like you’re a poor man who needs to find a billion dollars by tomorrow, not a rich man who needs to look like he’s poor.”
“Not poor…just average.”
Connor stopped mid stride. He looked at his brother and began a slight smile too, “I’m being absurd. I don’t know why I’m so nervous I just want everything to go well.”
“It will, she likes you, we already know that.”
The two men sat down across from each other.
“What do I do?” Connor asked.
“Well—” they were interrupted as Madeline walked in with a cheese, bread, and prosciutto plate, with a French press and cups balancing out the weight on the other end.
“Good, I’m glad you’re back. We were just beginning to brainstorm.”
Connor gestured for her to sit down. Émeric held more of a distance with the people he hired to “work for him,” but he’d grown used to Connor’s easy relationship with Madeline.
“So, besides watching
Notting Hill
what have you done?” Émeric asked.
“Nothing, I’ve been waiting for you.” Connor said this as if it should be completely obvious.
“Madeline do you have any thoughts?” Émeric turned to her.
“I can purchase a car with cash in the morning. We should look online for a suitable house, or condo, or something, we’ll need furniture, some clothes…and I guess the normal sort of thing a young man would have around the house.”
“Right,” Émeric sighed. “So I guess you are the purchaser and I am the style consultant?”

ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Lea Michaels is a suburban mom who fell in love with her husband at the age of twelve. The moment he declared her “goofy Lea” on the playground, it was love at first sight and she knew they’d spend the rest of their lives together.
They now have two little rambunctious kids of their own. Liam (who hasn’t yet figured out that everything doesn’t go in your mouth) and Sophie (who can cry at the drop of a dime like any good soap opera actress).
After devoting ten years to an unfulfilling career, Lea now drowns out the kid’s cries with love stories that reminds her of the butterflies she got the first time she saw her husband at the tender age of twelve.
