On the end of one of the top rows there were empty jars. One of the empty jars was labeled FORSYTHE. Another empty was labeled PETE.
Thorne grabbed an empty jar labeled KANE, took it out, locked the cabinet and stood back up.
“What’s that you said?” Thorne asked.
“I said, is that a good thing, you liking me?”
“It’s a good thing.”
Thorne tore the “KANE” label off the jar and tossed it into a waste can. He set the jar aside, picked up the bottle of scotch and brought it back to the table.
“An extremely good thing. I don’t like most people,” Thorne poured both of them a drink.
“Yeah, I’ve noticed that about you.”
They tapped each other’s glass in a silent toast and sipped their scotch.
“This is good hooch,” Kane said, savoring the scotch. “I’m beginning to think that you might actually have some taste, Thorne.”
Thorne smiled gently at Kane.
“White moves first, Emma.”
Kane made her opening move with a pawn. Thorne countered her immediately. Kane made another quick move and Thorne again countered quickly. Emma Kane smiled at Jacob Thorne.
“I can see that this is going to be really interesting,” Kane said.
“You have no idea.”
