Chapter 6: Everything Would Run Fine ... But Passengers Keep Getting in the Way
1 The short life of a website critical of the QE 2 and Cunard Line, which disappeared from the Internet less than two weeks after it began, was a topic of discussion on the “rec.travel.cruises” Usenet newsgroup between January 9 and January 12, 2000. The
QE 2
website had been put up after an unsatisfactory experience on a millennium cruise; the person behind it was seeking others to join in a group appeal for compensation from Cunard. Less than a week after the
QE 2
website was called to the attention of the Usenet discussion group, it was removed. A message posted on the discussion group by the website’s owner stated that Cunard had settled with him.

Appendix A
1 The cause was a hot water kettle that set a crew cabin on fire. The NTSB found that officers ignored their own shipboard firefighting plan. As a result, the fire spread beyond the cabin, smoke reached upper decks, and contact with the Coast Guard was not made for nearly an hour. See Joling, Dan. “NTSB Report Faults Crew in Ship Fire”
