Prologue

Buck stepped out of the
sitting room where Tal’s brothers sat playing games and getting to
know everyone, and eased the door closed behind him. Leaning
against the wall, he sighed deeply and let his eyes close. Try as
he might, he couldn’t get the smell of Percy out of his nostrils.
He rubbed the palms of his hands over his face and groaned. He had
to get out of there. Now. He’d thought going off world, to rescue
Trenton and Tuvarion, would have given his heart and wolf some much
needed healing by putting distance between him and his mate.
However, it had done nothing but make him long for Percy even
more.

An image of his blond love
rose behind his closed lids, and Buck dropped a hand to his groin
to rub at his erection. A thrill rushed through his body at the
sensation, and he allowed himself a brief moment to imagine it was
Percy on his knees, looking up at him with his gorgeous blue eyes,
nuzzling against Buck’s groin with those full pink lips. Buck
shivered. He opened one eyelid and looked around. The hallway was
filled with the palace guards, but it wasn’t like they hadn’t seen
him do worse things. Hell, some of them had been privy to his
sexual antics over the years.

With that pep talk in
place, Buck reached a hand into the front of his pants and grabbed
his hardened shaft, giving it a firm tug. He bit his lip and hissed
as his dream Percy licked up the column of his cock.

He snapped out of his
fantasy as the door opened to his right. Snatching his hand out of
his pants with a grunt, Buck jerked upright and turned to face the
intruder. His heart began to pound when he came face-to-face with
Percy. The younger man’s lips were red and swollen as if he’d been
sucking on something, and Buck’s dick twitched, releasing a spurt
of pre-cum into the fabric of his pants.

Percy’s nose twitched, and
he sniffed the air before glaring at Buck. He turned to look at the
guard standing only inches away and rolled his eyes. Only then was
Buck aware of the state of arousal many of the guards were in
because of his actions—the guard who had been standing close to him
doubly so.

Shit.

“
Percy, it’s not what it
looks—“

“
I assure you, Beta Prince,
it matters not what I think. If you will excuse me?” Percy nodded
his head and turned to hurry away.

“
Percy! Wait!” Buck raced
after his mate, grabbed his arm, and twisted him around. “Can you
please let me explain?”

“
There is no need. Now, I
have a meeting I must get to.”

Buck frowned. “Meeting?
What? With who? Blazell didn’t tell me about any appointment you
had with anyone.”

Percy jerked his arm out
of Buck’s grip and narrowed his eyes at him. “I have only just made
the Alpha King aware of our guest’s arrival. It is Duke Mufariso,
the Zeelithian.”

The smell of happiness
wafting up from his mate’s skin caused Buck to growl and his
hackles to rise. He wanted to find this Duke Mufariso and tear him
limb from limb. “Who is he to you?”

Percy leaned forward, and
for the first time since Buck met him, the younger man didn’t
arouse him. Percy’s face was twisted into a snarl, his fingers
curled into claws, and he looked poised and ready to attack. Buck
took a tiny step back as his eyes widened, not afraid of what Percy
would do, he knew he could take Percy in a fight, but Percy’s face
was turning red and his eyes were filling with tears. Percy was
about to explode with emotion—not pleasant feelings, but the kind
that tore a person up inside. Whatever he was about to say was
ripping a hole inside of him, and Buck had a feeling the blast
would echo inside of him as well.

“
You don’t get to ask that
question. You don’t get to be jealous or get to pry into my life.
You lost the right to be the possessive mate a while ago,
Buckington. Whatever I do, whoever I do it with, is no business of
yours anymore. As a matter of fact, according to you, it never was
your business. So who is Duke Mufariso to me? Someone you will
never be. Someone I respect.”

Buck’s heart shattered
into a million pieces as Percy turned and marched away. There were
only three other times he’d ever felt as horrible as he did right
then. The first time was when he was sixteen and had come into
contact with Lorthander on that nightmare-inducing night. The
second time was years later, when he’d come upon a plot that had
put his parents, his brother, and eventually his mate in danger.
And the third time was when he’d had to look Percy in the eye and
tell him they would never be mated, even after he’d promised to do
that very thing months before.

Turning away from the
sympathetic expressions on the faces of the guards, Buck stormed
from the palace. He didn’t have a destination in mind. He just knew
he had to get out of there. When he reached the shuttle bay, he
inhaled deeply and placed his hand onto one of the shuttlecrafts.
He’d made a promise to his mother that he wouldn’t run away again
if things got hard, but his mother wasn’t here anymore. She was
gone. So was his father. And it was all his fault.

Everything was his
fault.

Talon, Trenton, and
Tuvarion didn’t even realize all the misery they’d gone through was
his doing as well. It would just be best if he left.

His mind made up, Buck
climbed into the vehicle and set the coordinates for Namprince.
He’d go and visit friends on the planet for a few months, and maybe
when he came back, things would be better.

Maybe Percy would have
moved on or mated to someone else.

Or maybe Buck would get
lucky and die.

Who was he kidding? His
life was cursed. With his luck, he would return to Tumaro in a few
months to utter chaos, and it would all be his fault.
