Almost at the same instant, more began to fall. And not all
of them were Drones. Some were thin, white, and hateful-looking.

Horror filled her.

No!

Of all the times for a Mite attack!

Dante’s face had disappeared. Mariella twisted around,
searching for him, but she had no way of knowing if he was numbered amongst the
fallen or the falling. Dread wracked her thoughts, nearly kept her rooted to
the same spot as she kept looking around. Strangely, her mind actually felt
very calm and took stock of the situation for her.

More Drones in this one area than she had ever seen at one
time meant more Mites. This was a full-scale invasion.

Of course it is.

After they failed to kill her the last time, they had to
know that she was very near to completing the power source that would turn the
tide of the war. This was their last-ditch effort to end it all, to finally
win.

That meant everyone was in danger, not just her.

Thinking quickly, she turned back to her experiment and
grabbed two things: a heavy wrench, and the light.

With her weapons in hand, she went in search of the two most
important aliens in her life.

However, she didn’t have to go very far.

He ran right into her.

Rather, he fell.

Dante slammed into her at full-speed, knocking them both
down off the path and to the last few feet of outcropping in front of the lava
waves. She screamed, but Dante was swift and agile for such a large man. He
twisted them as they fell, so they actually landed higher up than when they
started.

“Dante!” she cried out, and threw her arms around him.
Suddenly, miraculously, he reciprocated. “Where’s the Queen?”

“Still above,” he gasped. “I was defending her when this
horrible Mite threw me. Mariella, I thought I was strong but he tore right
through the guard and threw me! He threw me!”

For some reason, the thought of Dante being so indignant
about another man picking him up was funny. Laughter started bubbling up in her
throat, uncontrollable. She pressed her fists to her mouth, giggling
hysterically. Tears sprang to her overheated face. “Oh…oh….Dante,” she gasped,
chuckling wretchedly. “You should…see…your face!”

No!” he said, sounding stricken. “Mariella!”

But, there was nothing she could do. The laughter wouldn’t
stop. All her dread and fear just came surging up out of her in the most inappropriate
way.

Dante grabbed her hands and shook them. “Mariella! Calm
down!”

She hardly heard him, starting to shake. So, he did the only
thing he could think to do and slapped her.

Really, it was hardly more than a tap on the cheek but he
was strong and she wasn’t used to him touching her willingly at all yet. The
laughter died in an instant, and she yanked herself together.

Losing control comes later.

This was her home now. It was time to save it.

“So, let’s do this!” she said, hefting her weapon. He looked
at the wrench, bemused. She wasted no time in wondering if they had no concept
of weapons due to their physical capabilities, and started running up the slope
as fast as she could. “Cover me!” she shouted over her shoulder. “I’m going for
the Queen!”

In her entire life, she had never so much as hurt another
person. Beating up that Mite was a shock, a kneejerk reaction. And now here she
was, intentionally seeking out someone to hurt them.

Once she reached the top of the cliff, it wasn’t hard to see
the Queen. She was on her rear at the very edge of a cliff, arms pinwheeling
behind her for balance. They had arrived just in time to see the last of her
brawny guard be wrenched to the ground, unmoving.

The dead lay all around, both sides seeming nearly
extinguished. And yet, that massive Mite that Dante described looked utterly
unscathed as he turned from the last guard and started for the Queen.

Not for long.

Wrenching her arm back, she lunged forward and lobbed the
light in her hand as far and hard as she could.

Being a scientist, she was never a very physical woman, but
luck was on her side somehow. The heavy crystal object slammed into the Mite’s
head, sending shards flying everywhere. He turned, huffing and snorting,
clacking his mandibles with blood pouring from multiple wounds.

Yes!

And then he charged.

From behind her, Dante hummed frantically and lunged in
front of her.

But, no matter how fast he was, she was smaller and ahead of
him. This was her time, her chance, her home.

Bringing up the wrench, Mariella leapt for the Mite and
slammed the weapon around into the side of his head.

There was a sickening crunch, and the creature tumbled
sideways, tripped over the cliff, and dropped.

There was no need to watch. The cliff here was too steep for
travel, and went at a sharp angle all the way down.

Suddenly leaderless, the remaining Mites jerked to a halt
and barked at each other. Dante glanced at them and said, “They are ordering
each other to retreat, sharing the news of what they saw.”

“How do we know if they’re really going?” Mariella puffed,
gasping for breath.

Just then, one of the white creatures wandered over. It had
its appendages in the air, signaling surrender. The Queen struggled to her
feet, struck her nose in the air to catch her dignity, and then strode over.

Suddenly feeling week, Mariella leaned into Dante. His arm
wrapped around her waist, even though he didn’t pull her closer. For now, it
was good enough.

“The Mites do not have any leadership other than that one
who died just now. That one is telling Her Majesty that they will be gone. But,
it is a warning. They say they may try again.”

Dull alarm sparked inside her. “Again?”

“It is just a bluff,” he reassured her.

Relief crashed down on her. “Oh, good,” she breathed, and
then passed out.

Chapter Fourteen

The future came so rapidly that Dante thought it might as
well have still been yesterday that he ventured out to Earth to find and abduct
a human. Had it really all been so long ago?

And now, look at where they were.

He waited in his chambers quietly, watching his hands on his
knees as nervousness alternatively ignited and chilled his loins. Yes, so much
had happened since that dreadful Mite attack. They spent an eternity disposing
of and counting the dead –at least, what there was to be counted. And the dead
Mites were disposed of as well, though without the proper words.

As they were fighting below, the Hive above had fought as
well. No one had been lucky. All the children were dead, murdered in their beds.
More than half the adult population was gone. Power no longer mattered, because
survival itself suddenly seemed a terribly slim idea on its own.

That was, until the meeting which came only an hour or two
after the last of the dead were taken care of.

The Queen called a meeting.

There hadn’t been a meeting in over ten years, but there was
a meeting now. More importantly, she descended very far down the cliffs to
speak to those assembled on the ground. That was unprecedented, though there
were two very good reasons for it.

There were no longer as many people.

And, their intercom system was still down and powerless.

Much to his surprise, Dante was summoned to stand on a cliff
that was only a tier lower than the Queen. And Mariella was right near her side,
closer to her even than the newest member of the reformed royal guard.

“My people,” the Queen said sadly, her voice low but her
buzzing loud. “My friends and family, my children, we have suffered heavy
losses here recently. I cannot even begin to express my heavy sorrows over the
waste of so much young life. We have been robbed of a great deal of our
potential here, and it is with this in mind that I am instating some temporary
changes to our way of life.

“We will have a Hive-wide mating session immediately.
Females are to choose from any male at all. Not only this, but we will now have
two mating sessions per year rather than one. To accommodate for the sudden
abundance of youth, all will share in the rearing of children. We will figure
this out as the time comes.

“In addition,” the Queen continued, “we will lower the
mating age by two years. All those males and females who are fifteen years of
live will now be eligible to mate. Again, these changes are temporary. Does
anyone object to these?”

She waited. No one said a single word.

She sighed a little. “Very well. In that case, I have some
more uplifting news to share with you. Mariella the human, step forward so all
may see you.”

Dante’s heart swelled with pride as the beautiful human
woman stepped forward.

The Queen turned to her, and gently lay her diamond scepter
on the crown of Mariella’s head. “This human has saved us future heartbreak.
She has, and will continue to, provide us with a new means of energy. Our
struggle uphill will be a long one, but she will help get us there. And it is
with this in mind that I offer her a permanent place amongst our Hive. She will
live here forever as one of us. Not as human, but as Drone. What say she?”

Dante held his breath. Mariella looked away from the Queen
slightly, breaking conduct, but her eyes sought his and so he gladly gave his
gaze. “I accept,” she said, speaking to the Queen but meaning it for him.

“Very well. From this point on, you will be as one with the
Hive, as we shall all be. You have unrestricted access to our home. In
addition, you will also be expected to take part in our mating sessions.”

Mariella was a true Drone now. Almost immediately after her
induction, she chose him officially to mate with him. However, she had
requested that they wait until now, this very time, to make it proper.

And so they filled the time between then and the Hive-wide
mating session by helping to rebuild what was destroyed, and moving Mariella
into a larger lab and a closer room. Seeing as how quite a bit more space had
become available…

I must not think of such things.

Miraculously, her assistants had not only survived but
already recruited another two Drones to come work for her. At this time, they
were all working to create more panels for the new fuel supply, which was now
grandly lighting up the Queen’s chambers.

Of course, the sheer amount of wires to get that power
anywhere was absurd, and severely lessened the output by the time it arrived,
but Dante knew his mate. She would continue to update everything as time went
on. And if the next generation was raised in a new manner from the last,
perhaps more of them would strive to understand the sciences.

Footsteps.

Dante looked up.

Mariella stood in the entrance to his room, wearing her new
clothes. His heart began to pound at the sight of her and how beautiful she
was. And he knew that she was wearing nothing beneath the simple tunic. It was
something in the way she moved, how intoxicating she smelled.

“Mariella,” he said softly.

At his welcome, she stepped gracefully inside and headed
over to his bed. “Can I sit down?” she asked.

“Of course,” he murmured, and looked down. Somehow, despite
this being the proper situation for it, he still had no idea how he was going
to manage to get through this. She was simply so beautiful…

She sighed a bit, reaching out to lay her hand on his thigh.
“I’m nervous, too.”

“Are you?”

In answer, she leaned over his lap and kissed him.

Her lips were warm and sweet, and he relished in their
fullness against his. They were also trembling, and he knew that she’d been
telling the truth about how she felt.

In return, he lay his hand over hers on his thigh. Gripping
her fingers tightly, he brought her hand directly between his legs and to his
manhood. Her fingers spread out wide, stroking experimentally over his length.

He felt himself start to harden, though not by very much. He
simply couldn’t relax enough for that yet.

Mariella seemed to understood, because she stopped moving
her fingers and just kissed him more sweetly. Her tongue flicked his lips, and
he opened his mouth to let her in.

After a little bit, she pulled back and spoke into his
mouth. “It’s okay,” she said softly, “to do anything to me that I do to you. I
promise. Everyone else will be right now, so it’s okay.”

It’s okay.

Clinging to her words, he tried it out for himself and
pressed his tongue against hers. It felt very awkward and rather not sexual at
all, but she moaned and purred against his lips.

Somehow, that was what did it.

Tingles lanced down through his stomach, gathering in his
shaft. Gasping breathlessly, he felt her fingers press against him again.
Almost against his will, he shoved his tongue rougher against hers. His free
hand rose up to grab at the back of her head. In his excitement, he had to
struggle not to hurt her as he dragged her head closer to his so they could
kiss harder, deeper.

Over and over, their tongues danced together and away. All
the while, she made excited little growls and purrs to encourage him.

After a time, he realized that he had been humming to her
all along.

No matter what his mind thought, his body had known the
whole time what it needed.

His nervousness faded even more into the background,
becoming just part of his arousal. Still holding the back of her head, Dante
whispered, “I want to do more.” His voice shook and he blushed a little, but
Mariella smiled with understanding.

In an instant, she was just as naked as last time. And this
time, it took his breath away with pure joy to see. Her skin was milky and
pure, so innocent in its color. The gold of her hair and the brilliance of her
eyes contrasted beautifully with the splendor of his own body, and he stood up
to undress himself at the realization that he wanted to be naked, too.

It was a struggle to get his trousers down over his
throbbing, erect member, but Mariella reached over to help. And then she kept
her hands on him, wrapping them both around his hard length. Her hands were so
soft and pale, and he was so dark, practically jet-black at his engorged tip.

“Oh,” he murmured.

Mariella pulled very lightly on him. “Come here,” she
encouraged, and led him back to bed with her hand wrapped around his shaft. The
drag of friction on his skin was nearly enough to send him over the edge, but
he fought to hold back for her.

Sitting at his side again, Mariella suddenly scooted her
butt away from him and leaned over. Dante looked down, fascinated at what she
was doing –humans were so strange- and then he gasped as her mouth slid
gloriously down over the head of his member. Soft lips rubbing over his velvet
tip, she squeezed the base of him very lightly and then took in as much of him
into her mouth as she could.

Her breasts pressed against his shaking leg. Wrapping his
hands in her hair, Dante tilted his head back against the wall and moaned as
her mouth and tongue surrounded him with silky heat.

When she began to suck, he arched his back and dragged down
at her hair while thrusting his hips up at her face. His shaft hit the back of
her throat, pressing and threatening to slide even deeper. The sound she made
was glorious, a beautiful groan.

That was it. That was all he could take. He started to feel
it coming, a surge of seed climbing up his shaft.

And that wasn’t how he wanted it. This was wonderful, but he
wanted to mate with her. “Mariella,” he whimpered, and pulled at her hair in
the opposite direction now. “Mariella, I can’t…”

His mate seemed to understand, because she rose up off him
with a gasp, and then lay back on his bed.

For just a moment, he drank in her nudity with his eyes.

And then, because he knew the basics, he crawled up over her
and tried to slide himself inside her immediately. She gasped a little, part
pleasure, mostly surprise. “Careful,” she warned, chastising him so gently that
he felt no sting. “Women get excited a little slower.”

He leaned down and kissed her, then murmured against her
lips, “Should I stop?”

“No!” she said, a little alarmed. “Just go slow. Be gentle
with me.”

He didn’t quite understand. What did gentleness have to do
with mating? However, this time, he couldn’t quite seemed to find her entrance.
A little frustrated, he slid his oozing tip around through her perfect
coral-pink slit while seeking it.

In his travels, he felt himself slide over her nub of flesh.
Her hips jumped, and she bucked against him a little. The motion reminded him
of the thrusting she’d done against his mouth, and so he did it again and again
until she was very nearly writhing and oozing her own beautiful, musky juices.

“Get inside me,” she gasped.

He tried to obey again and found her so swollen that her
muscles practically pulled him into place. They snapped together like magnets,
and he sank deep inside her until their hips met roughly.

Holding together like that, he watched her eyes roll back in
her head and marveled at how excruciatingly pleasurable it was to feel her
slick walls clutching at him as though he wasn’t meant to leave.

It was too much to resist. Holding himself up with an arm on
either side of her, Dante slid himself back out of her. Her pussy tried to
follow. “Dante!” she said, sounding tortured.

In response, he shoved back inside her and began to thrust
in earnest.

She grabbed his shoulders with her hands, digging in her
nails. That extra bit of pressure made him crazy, and he felt himself start to
throb out of control. There was no time left, and he thrust harder and faster.

Wrapping her shoulders around his body, Mariella thrust with
him.

Truly mates now, they joined again and again until they were
both screaming and shaking. His seed filled her, and when they both collapsed
back onto the bed, he knew it wouldn’t be the only time that night.

In fact, he thought, it might not be something they did only
during Hive-appropriate times of the year. He felt something deep inside her, a
strange and impossible emotion for a Drone such as him.

A human might call it love.

Dante didn’t know what to call it, only that he knew he
would never want another besides this human.
