Her
body
tensed,
the slightest change in her posture.
Gasping, she tore away from him. Dominic held his hand over the gaping wound at
his neck and propped himself up on his elbow beside her huddled frame.

Cara
,
are you okay?”

Nothing.
Kate’s body shook, every inch
of her vibrating with tremors. Her eyes glazed over, staring off in glassy
absence. Her mouth hung partially open as she made a strange gurgling sound.
Dominic tried to roll her over, tried to waken her from whatever trance she’d
fallen into, but she was beyond his reach. He cradled her stiff, shaking form
against his chest and begged her to be okay.

“Stay
with me, Kate,” he pled. “I can’t lose you again.”

He
didn’t know if she could hear him, for she didn’t respond. But he would try
anything to reach her, to keep her with him.

“Please,
God, don’t let her die,” Dominic begged to the Almighty who’d contracted him to
kill vampires, then destined him to fall in love with one. “I’ll do anything;
just don’t take her from me.”

Kate
sucked a shallow, ragged breath in, but never let it out. Her body stilled in
Dominic’s arms. A drop of moisture fell to Kate’s motionless face.
His tears.
Dominic couldn’t remember the last time he’d
cried, but he did so now. He threw his head back and let loose a mournful howl.

Kate
was dead.

Not
enough thanks can be said to my little sister,

Thank you, Kermit, for all your work on my behalf. I don’t know what I’d do
without my Twitter queen, marketing/PR guru, and editor. Thanks for your
tireless efforts on my behalf. Sorry for all the times I have you smacking your
head.

I’m
so grateful for the community I’ve found on facebook. Jessica Bowman, thank you
