I could see her so clearly in my mind. Her cute, round face. Her bouncy blonde curls. She stood before me, smiling and cupping my hands in hers, telling me everything would be all right. Not to worry. Not to be scared.

We’d be together again someday.

This was her promise, and although I didn’t believe her, I refused to say goodbye.

Instead, I whispered aloud, “I love you.”

And tears poured out of my eyes.

It was the first time I had ever said it to her—those three magical words. Better late than never, right? Before the final door closed, as I left this ugly world behind, having reached the end of these dead highways, I’d say how I truly felt.

With my last breath, I’d told her—
finally
—that I loved her.

No flash. No frills. No diamond ring in my pocket.

Just that I loved her. And I hoped that somehow she’d gotten the message.

If I had one regret, as the cold darkness of the unknown swooped in to separate us forever, it would be that I’d never get the chance to show her how much.
