Adam jumped to his feet, gazing in wonder at the lifeless body for a few moments. After that, everything he did seemed automatic and planned, but none of it was. It was like he was living inside a David Lynch movie.
Four shots had been fired, and despite what Bill thought, someone was bound to hear at least one.
Adam snatched the white rag that had been wrapped around his gun from his back pocket.
Kneeling down, he carefully positioned Bill’s body, legs spread slightly, right arm pulled away from his head, gun stripped from the hand that still gripped it, then placed inches from his right hand, all the time using the white rag.
With everything in position, Adam slowly pulled his gun from the front of Bill’s pants, wrapped it in the white rag, and stuffed it into his coat pocket.
On his feet again, Adam checked around the immediate area for any final details. There was nothing. It was a perfect crime scene.
He walked toward his car parked on the dirt road, never looking back. The full moon overhead made the tall grass in the path ahead of him look like dark water gently swirling on the surface of a pond. Adam wondered if he’d ever be able to sleep again.
AUTHOR’S NOTE
It has been said that dedicated writers write because of their love for the written word. How true this is. In the course of writing Dead River, I was fortunate to have many discussions with several individuals who helped me give my story its own beat. Special thanks go to Jennifer Sawyer, Dan Balgo, Sara Fieberg, Rex Browning, Bob Shearer, Phil Di Piazza, Genene Miller-Coté, and Nicky Pitman.
