Dex set his beer mug down and looped his hands behind his head. “Yeah. I wanted to talk to you about that. Ava’s got a bunch of vacation saved up. A couple of
months’ worth, actually. Since things are kind of calm around here, at least for the moment, how would you feel about me taking her on a cross-country trip? I can scout out a few of those venues we were thinking about for the next couple of gyms we want to open.”

I nodded and slapped Dex on the shoulder. “You deserve it, man. You both do. Take as much time as you need. If I need you, I know how to get a hold of you.”

Dex turned and looked at me. Relief washed over his face and it occurred to me he might really have worried about my reaction to his extended honeymoon plan. Not a chance. I meant what I said. I loved Dex like my brother and now Ava was truly my sister. I couldn’t be happier. And I also couldn’t be hornier. Ava’s bridesmaid had quit waiting for me to make a move and was on her way over with two beers in her hands.

“Dex!” Ava called to him from the bar. She swayed a little as she waved Dex over.

“Yeah.” I backhanded Dex on the shoulder as my little bridesmaid came toward me. “Get the fuck outta here. Cockblocking your best man is very bad luck.”

Dex laughed, got up, and held his chair out for Ava’s friend. But this little red-haired vixen was bolder than that. She set the beer mugs down and straddled my lap. God. She smelled like honey and spice. “I’m Misty,” she purred as she slid her hands under the lapels of my tux. “And you’re gorgeous.”

I threaded my fingers through Misty’s up-do. I couldn’t wait to see all that red hair spill out of that tight bun. Her ample breasts strained against the bodice of her green satin bridesmaid’s dress and I couldn’t wait to watch those spill out either. She had a dusting of cinnamon-colored freckles across her shoulders that led down into her cleavage.

“You look delicious,” I said. She leaned down and kissed me. Mmmm, she tasted just like cinnamon too. Then I took Misty upstairs and our own private wedding party lasted well into the morning.

One Week Later

“You sure you’re ready?” I asked Tiny. He looked healthy, but dark lines shadowed his eyes. He’d lost about thirty pounds since being shot in the shoulder. Sure, he needed to, but it wasn’t a good weight loss.

Tiny snapped his helmet and climbed on his Harley. His speedy recovery shocked even the doctors. In the beginning, they only gave him about a ten percent chance of having enough strength in his left hand to work the clutch. He was about to prove them all wrong. But he didn’t want an audience. So this morning, it was just going to be Tiny and me riding up to the bluff and back.

“I’m ready, Sly,” he said. He cranked the throttle and I waited.

“Hard part’s over!” Tiny bellowed, then he released the clutch and tore off.

“Slow down, you crazy bastard!” I yelled. I zoomed off after him.

I heard the roar of Tiny’s laughter as he hurtled down the main road out of town, heading for the bluff.

“Shit,” I muttered. He had to be doing about ninety already. Tiny didn’t want an easy trial, the idiot wanted to drag race. “Fuck.”

I sped after him. Thank God it was still early morning. It was just the two of us on the road. At least he wouldn’t be able to take out any civilians if this went wrong. About a mile away from the Den, I started laughing myself.

God. This did feel good. Nothing but open road, bright sunlight and the first bit of peace we’d had in more years than I could count. I could still hear Tiny’s deep laughter over the roar of our engines and I said a prayer of thanks that he was okay.
We
were okay.

Finally, Green Bluff rose above us and Tiny took the turn straight out to the cliff. He stole a look behind him to make sure I was still following. Still
trailing
more like. He reached the edge before me and raised his fists in the air Rocky-style. After taking two rounds in the shoulder just a month ago, even being able to do that was a miracle.

I eased up on the throttle to cruise in next to him. He was still laughing. I flipped him off and pressed my rear brake. Nothing happened. I heard a pop but the bike didn’t slow. It accelerated. Something was wrong. Very wrong.

What the fuck?

I pressed the brake again but the thing was dead. The edge of the cliff and the two-hundred-foot drop to Great Wolf Lake were only a few yards ahead of me. And I was headed straight for it at eighty miles an hour.

I hear some people see their lives flashing before their eyes before they die. For me, I only saw Tiny’s face drop just before I went airborne and knew I was totally fucked.
