Justin had spoken to him earlier about how
unreliable the telephones, cell phones and Internet were becoming. Sometimes he
couldn’t log in at all.

“Lots of crazies are saying the world is ending and
the dinosaurs are just the beginning. They’re disrupting the Internet with
viruses or Trojans. It’s all going to get worse before it gets better,” he’d predicted
gloomily. “And one of the last articles I read on the web was about how many
police forces were being militarized and deployed in almost every state along
with the National Guards to fight the creatures. Marshall Law. I believe soon that
will be worldwide as well, but recently information isn’t coming as freely from
the rest of the world on that subject. Tonight I couldn’t raise the Internet at
all. It was just…down. No explanation, nothing.”

Henry hadn’t had much to say about it. He’d been
expecting those eventualities for a while. And Justin was right, it wasn’t
going to get any better.

On the other side of the glass the snow kept
falling, as large as white leaves. He shivered.

And what would the spring bring?
He couldn’t bear to think of it. He would
tomorrow.

He sighed, turned from the window, switched off the
light and, with draggy steps, went to his bed that now, thankfully, had his
wife in it.

Sleep was his only escape these days…unless he had
more of those crazy dinosaur dreams. He’d begun having them again lately. Weird
vignettes where dinosaurs were the main characters and had all the power. Dinosaurs
hiding everywhere ready to attack and devour him, his men, friends and family.
Dinosaurs running the world, sitting in the United Nations around shiny
mahogany tables planning what to do with the last of the doomed human race they
had imprisoned in concentration camps. Dinosaurs throwing rocks, firing guns, eating
hamburgers made of human meat; dinosaurs in suits with murder in their creepy reptilian
eyes. Multiplying faster than anyone could have foreseen. Dinosaurs ruling the
earth. No room or place for men anymore.

A dinosaur world.

It seemed they stalked him everywhere now, awake
and asleep, and had for a long time. He could barely remember when his life had
been anything else but running from, chasing or fighting the bastards. He could
barely recall his old mundane life but missed it terribly.

Heaven help him. Heaven help the world.

But he would keep fighting, never give up. They all
would. Their world had changed, was changing more now…but it was
their
world, not the dinosaur’s, and they’d win it back. No matter how hard they
would have to fight or how long.

Of course, they’d win it back.

What other choice did they have?

About
Kathryn Meyer Griffith
...

Since childhood I’ve been an artist
and worked as a graphic designer in the corporate world and for newspapers for
twenty-three years before I quit to write full time. But I’d already begun
writing novels at 21, over forty-three years ago now, and have had twenty-one (eleven
romantic horror, two horror novels, two romantic SF horror, one romantic
suspense, one romantic time travel, one historical romance and three murder
mysteries) previous novels, two novellas and twelve short stories published
from Zebra Books, Leisure Books, Avalon Books, The Wild Rose Press, Damnation
Books/Eternal Press; and I’ve self-published my last five novels with Amazon
Kindle Direct and my dinosaur novels are my best-sellers.

I’ve been married to Russell for thirty-six
years; have a son, James, and two grandchildren, Joshua and Caitlyn, and I live
in a small quaint town in Illinois, which is right across the JB Bridge from
St. Louis, Mo. We have three quirky cats, ghost cats Sasha and Cleo, and live
cat Sasha (Too), and the five of us live happily in an old house in the heart
of town. Though I’ve been an artist, and a folk singer in my youth with my
brother Jim, writing has always been my greatest passion, my butterfly stage,
and I’ll probably write stories until the day I die…or until my memory goes.
