At some point it came up on the bank, and when I trained my binoculars on it, I could see its body was covered with hundreds of ticks. So it must have been desperate to either get rid of them or to at least feel better. I felt terrible for the deer, but also made a mental note that this was yet another reason why animals that don’t normally swim would get into the water.
