Or was it?

Ryan’s face had changed as I flashed to the dozen or more personal effects I’d left, scattered around ‘his’ apartment—which, rapidly, was becoming something more like ‘ours’. Now he looked at me with a softer glance, nodding gently.

“I know what you mean,” he said, squeezing my hand again as an old chianti bottle flickered, a candle taper stuck inside, in the middle of the table. “Back when it was taboo and our parents didn’t know what we were up to, we
had
to sneak around – like high school kids without a place of our own. It was fun, exciting… maybe even a little sinful.”

“A little?” I reminded him, making
him
blush this time. “I couldn’t wait to get with you, Ryan. It was a
lot
sinful!”

“You know what I mean,” he grumbled, impatient to make his point. “Now it’s… okay, for us to be together. Hell, ever since I got my apartment, we’ve been together constantly.”

“You’re saying that’s a bad thing, Ryan?”

“Not at all,” he insisted. “It’s just that, well… before we had to wait a bit before we could see each other, touch each other, taste each other. Now all we have to do is… roll over!”

I snorted at the image, not to mention how true it was. “So why do I feel so restless all of a sudden?” I asked. “Why isn’t it the same as it used to be?”

“Maybe… maybe you’re feeling a little bored by it all.”

I smirked. “When did you get so wise all of a sudden?”

He chuckled, ignoring my question in favor of a more reassuring reply. “I just want you to know, Heather, I’ll never let you get bored, okay? Not as long as we’re together, anyway.”

“Promise?” I asked.

He nodded, peering deeply into my eyes. “You’ve excited me every day since I met you. You think I want to lose that just because we can eat out in public now?”

I chuckled, flagging down the waitress. “Speaking of eating out,” I teased, asking for a box for the rest of our pizza. “What say we adjourn the rest of this date to our favorite deserted warehouse parking lot?”

“Mmmm…” Ryan said, tossing a few bills on the table to cover the check. “I thought you’d never ask…”

We fled the restaurant, the pizza secondary to our excitement for each other. Whatever might happen next, we were free to love as others loved—openly and honestly. Our parents may or may not approve, but they were mature enough to understand their disapproval wouldn’t stop us, anyway. Now it was up to us to find, and keep, love alive.

In my experience, there was nothing better for both than making out in a deserted warehouse parking lot, just you and the stepbrother you love, alone in the dark, hearts racing, clothes flying and pulse pounding. It may not have been normal, and was far from traditional, but then… when had Ryan and I ever played by the rules?
