24 Toxic Chemicals in Bill Moyers

In 2003, the Mount Sinai School of Medicine—in connection with two public interest groups—tested the blood and urine of nine people for the presence of 210 chemical pollutants. They found a total of 167 of these toxic substances in the volunteers. The average volunteer was carrying 91 of these compounds; the lowest number was 77, and the highest was 106.

Journalist Bill Moyers—the host of
NOW
on PBS and the interviewer who made mythologist Joseph Campbell famous—was one of the people tested. The following are among the witch's brew of 84 contaminants found in Moyers' body. (For more information, check out the Body Burden website at [

The Wonders of Modern Medicine,
part two

An unknown number of people have died from overdoses of morphine because of sloppy prescribing and filling. Roxanal—an oral solution of morphine sulfate—is sold in concentrations measuring in milliliters. Unfortunately, prescriptions are often written without specifying the type of measurement, which is sometimes assumed to be milliliters, instead of the much smaller milligrams. The result: Some poor slobs who should be getting, say, five milligrams of morphine actually end up taking five milliliters, which is 100 milligrams.

12 Acceptable Levels of Filth in Food

Some amount of insects, rodent hair, and mold in our food is inevitable. In 1986, the Food and Drug Administration was told to figure out how much filth is too much. They set limits at which the food was deemed unfit for human consumption; anything under that amount is A-OK. So if seven rat hairs per 10 grams of food are considered defective, then six hairs are fine.

The Powerdeath Girls

What could be more harmless than pink lotion from the Powerpuff Girls? A lot of things. The goo that came in some kind of “kit” adorned with the three cartoon girls had to be recalled nationwide in February-March 2003 because it was contaminated with a nasty bacterium.
Pseudomonas aeruginosa
primarily nails people with weaker than average immune systems, which includes most kids. The University of Wisconsin-Madison Department of Bacteriology says that the bug is “notorious for its resistance to antibiotics and is, therefore, a particularly dangerous and dreaded pathogen.” Among the diseases it causes: pneumonia, meningitis, brain abscesses, untreatable acne, eye infections “that can lead to loss of the entire eye,” and infections of the ear, bones, joints, urinary tract, soft tissue, and gastrointestinal tract.

7 Edible Flowers

Cathy Wilkinson Barash's colorful, lavishly illustrated 1993 cookbook looks in many ways like a lot of other coffee-table cookbooks. Except that it's titled
Edible Flowers.
In it, the lifelong flower-eater gives recipes, complete with scrumptious photos, for dishes you can prepare with 66 types of flower. Among them:

1

Tulips
often taste like peas or beans, Barash tells us from experience, “occasionally with a green apple overtone.” They make great salad dressing and tuna salad.

2

Pansy
petals taste mildly sweet, while the entire flower has “a wintergreen overtone.” Grinding them with granulated sugar in water makes pansy syrup.

3

As for
roses
, Barash recommends old varieties and fragrant hybrids. In general, roses have varying flavors, “all on the sweet side, with overtones ranging from apple to cinnamon to minty.”

4

Chrysanthemums
are tangy and go well with lamb.

5

When young,
dandelions
“have a sweet, honeylike flavor.” Combine them with sugar, yeast, and juice from freshly-squeezed lemons and oranges to make the fabled dandelion wine.

6

Honeysuckle
is especially yummy; Barash lavishes praise on this “floral, nectarous delectation.” Like all flowers, it can be candied, jellied, or used to infuse vodka.

7

Sunflower
buds taste like artichoke, while the petals of the flower are bittersweet.
