Chapter Fourteen
Meeka was having a really good day. Ever since Johnny had seen her with Rick at her job, he had started to be nice to her. She wasn’t sure why, but it was just one less stressful aspect that she had to deal with, so she would take it.
“Meeka, you can go ahead and go if you want to. It has died down and I know that you haven’t left early in a while.”
“I will. Thank you Sir.”
He looked at her with a little desire in his eyes and to be honest, he wasn’t a bad looking guy. Before it was just his attitude that had made him so ugly, but now she could see the charm that the others had seen. He was quite handsome when he wanted to be, but Meeka still had eyes for Rick. She gave him a smile and finished her side work. About ten minutes later she was out the door and jumping into her car. With a couple hours before her son got home from school, she decided to treat herself to a little shopping. Johnny was giving her better shifts and better stations at work, so she had found herself with a little extra money to play with the last couple of months.
There was a lingerie store a few miles from her job that she wanted to check out. Rick liked her in anything, but she still remembered his darkened eyes when she had worn that teddy the first time they were together. While they hadn’t been able to finish then, she really wanted to go get something special for their long-standing Thursday night date. Her mother had started watching Malik every Thursday and then Rick would come over for dinner every Wednesday night when he got off of work. It was a great schedule and she wanted to add a little spice to the mix.
Meeka was just about to turn down the side road when she heard a screech of tires and then felt an impact on her door. Her head was knocked against the metal door frame and everything went black.
Chapter Fifteen
“Ms.? Can you tell me your name?”
Meeka looked up with blurred vision and could see bright lights above her as she was moved down a hallway. There was a man inches from her face that she didn’t recognize, but she became aware that she was in a hospital pretty quickly.
“Meeka Brown.
“Meeka, you are in Feindland’s emergency room. You have been in a car accident. You suffered head trauma and we are going to give you a CT scan to make sure that there is no internal bleeding. You have a few other lacerations that will need a few stitches, but right now, we are just worried about your head. The doctor will be in with you after the test okay?”
Meeka shook her head, the screeching tire sound re-playing in her head. She grabbed the man’s arm when something came to her mind.
“Wait, my son will be home from school soon and there will be no one there. Can you call my mother to go meet him?”
“Of course Ma’am, just give me the number and I will call her right away. Is there anyone else you would like me to call, someone who can be here with you?”
“My boyfriend works here in the E.R., Rick Michaels”
“Oh you mean Dr. Rogers? He started going by his middle name a few years back, but here at the hospital we still call him Dr. Rogers”
When the man said Dr. Rogers though, her brain worked to remember where she had heard it. She didn't know if it was the hit on her head, or something else but It hit her suddenly and all of the court papers flashed in her head. Dr. Rogers was the one that she was suing for malpractice for killing her husband!
“No, never mind, I am fine. Just call my mother please so my son will not be alone. He is only six.”
“Yes Ma’am. The technicians will be right in with you.”
Meeka’s mind raced and through the pain, her eyes started to water. She was not crying for her whole body that was screaming with pain, but her heart because it was slowly breaking. She was in love with the man who let her husband die while he worked on someone else. She was in love with the man that made it so her son would never have his father back. She started to realize too, that he either knew when he met her son, or he couldn’t even remember the name of the man he killed. Her thoughts went to the day Rick met Malik and how his face had went white as snow. Meeka knew in her heart that he knew and then made love to her that night. That hurt more than all of the other stuff did. And why would he start going by his middle name? Was he that ashamed of what he had done those few years back?
There was not a lot of time to think about it though. Meeka was wheeled into the room for the CT scan and she was asked a barrage of questions.
“Could you be pregnant Ms. Brown?”
Meeka stopped for a moment and she thought back to the last time she had a period. Another sinking feeling hit her. It had been over a month since she had a period. This day just seemed to be taking a turn that she was not ready for.
“I could be.”
“Well we need to make sure one way or another. There is a risk to a fetus, so you will know in a few minutes.”
The woman patted Meeka’s shoulder gently and the nurse brought in a test for her to take. When it came back positive, Meeka wanted to cry even more. While she loved the idea of being pregnant, the father was now a big problem. She was waiting in a small examination room for the doctor to come in.

“Rick, I think your girlfriend is here.”
“Meeka?”
“Yeah, Meeka Brown. She said something about you being here, but when I asked if she meant Dr. Rogers, she said never mind. Are you guys fighting or something?”
“We are about to be. Her husband is Malik Brown.”
Dr. Colins looked confused for a moment, until it dawned on him.
“The one that you are being sued about?”
“Yes.”
“She didn’t know.”
“No, but now she does.”
“Did you know?”
“For a little while when I met her son.”
“Man, I don’t know what to say. This was the one you were wanting to marry right?”
“Yeah. But she is never going to want to marry me now.”
“Do you want me to take it? She is in exam room 1.”
“Exam room, is she okay?”
Rick started to feel the constriction in his throat again.
“She was in a car accident. Head trauma and a few lacerations, but yeah, she is okay.”
Rick sighed relief. Even though she would probably want nothing to do with him, at least she was okay.
“No, I need to go. Thanks for letting me know.”
“You might want to know something else Rick.”
“What?”
“She just found out she is pregnant.”
Rick felt a surge of hope and happiness, but it was dashed away with the look on her face when he walked through the door.
Chapter Sixteen
“Meeka, are you okay?”
Rick went to her and hugged her to his body. She was stiff and after a moment, he pulled back to look at her.
“Are we speaking of my injuries or the fact that you killed my husband or that you knew and failed to mention it to me?”
Rick could see the look on her face and he knew then, that he had lost her. The light in her eyes were dimmed and she looked at him like she didn’t even know him.
“I can explain….”
“How about you just release me so I can go on my way? My son is at home waiting for me.”
“Are you going to let me explain myself?”
“What is the point Rick? I never want to see you again, period.”
Rick was crushed, but he tried desperately to keep his professional composure.
“Well Ms. Brown. Your test came back clear and you are ready to go home. I would suggest that you get to an OB soon to make sure that our baby is okay.”
Meeka gasped. She did not expect him to know, though he did have her file in his hand. His eyes were distant and she nodded to him before she walked out of the door. She held her head high until she was down the hallway and away from him. As soon as the double doors closed, Meeka burst into tears. What had started as a great day was quickly turning into one of the worst days of her life.
By the time she got a taxi home, her mother was worried.
“Meeka, what happened?”
Tamila touched the blood covered gauze on her daughter’s head.
“I got in a wreck. I don’t know what happened to the car. I just woke up in the hospital, but it will all be okay. Where is Malik?”
“He is in his room playing that video game. He asked if Rick was at the hospital taking care of you. He really seems to like this guy.”
Meeka started to cry again. Her mother looked at her weird for a moment and then hugged her daughter.
“What is wrong baby?”
“It was him mom. He is the doctor that let Malik die. He is the one our family is suing and trying to get his license revoke. Rick’s last name is actually Rogers, not Michaels”
Tamila’s mouth dropped and she couldn’t hide her confusion.
“Are you sure?”
“Yes mom and he knew who I was, but never told me.”
“How long has he known?”
“A couple of months, ever since he met Malik.”
Tamila was in shock and she didn’t know what to say. She could see that her daughter was very upset, but there seemed to be more that was upsetting her.
“What else?”
“How do you always know ma?”
“Because I made you. What else is wrong?”
“I just found out I am pregnant.”
“Oh my God Meeka! I am so happy for you. Aren’t you happy?”
“Not with all of this. How could I be with a man that took my son’s father away from him? Not to mention that he kept it from me, I will never be able to trust him again.”
Tamila held her tongue so much that it hurt. She didn’t see the point of saying anything because Meeka was not in the mood to hear anything. The mother knew when to let her daughter stew for a while. It was her process and Tamila had learned a long time ago to accept it. Where she would like to hash it out immediately, Meeka was more prone to mental shutdown for thoughtful reflection. She knew that her daughter’s mind was made up until she changed it.
Chapter Seventeen
Meeka ignored Rick as best as she could. At first he called multiple times and sent several text a day, but after a couple of weeks, the calls were once a day. It had been a few months since the day in the hospital and Meeka had still not changed her mind. She felt betrayed and as the child inside of her grew, she contemplated what she would do.
She had decided that she was going to need a bigger place and was actively looking for a small house. Passed the stage of morning sickness, Meeka was starting to enjoy the idea of another child, but the feeling was bittersweet without Rick. She thought of him mostly at night, with the day, she could stay busy enough to not have to think too much. Her body missed his touch so much it hurt.
Meeka knew that she had to speak to him eventually but she was not ready for the inevitable. She was just not ready to deal with it, but she was pushed into some sort of decision when she was going through the mail after work one day. The letter was thick and from her lawyer. When she opened it, she scanned through the documents and she couldn’t believe what she was reading.
Her hand went to her phone and dialed her lawyer’s number. She understood the paperwork, but she just didn’t quite understand what had happened.
“Gloria Stein’s office?”
“Yes this is Meeka Brown. I need to speak to Gloria if she is available.”
“Oh yes, let me get her.”
Meeka waited nervously on the phone. She scanned through the multiple pages and then stared at the spot that required her signature.
“Meeka, how are you? I know you didn't really want to be involved too much in this process but we're at a stage in the case now where we need you. Did you get the settlement agreement?”
“I did. How did this happen? I thought we had to go to court again next month?”
“We did, but the doctor gave in and said to just pay it. Maybe his conscience got the best of him, who knows? You won’t have to worry about him working around here or anywhere else again.”
“Why do you say that?”
“A settlement over a million dollars? He will never be able to be insured again, his rates would be astronomical.”
“Oh.”
“You don’t sound happy. I thought this is what you wanted.”
“It was.”
Meeka told the woman what she really wanted done and Gloria was quiet on the other end.
“Make sure you send him a good bill.”
Gloria brightened up on the other end and even though her client was going against her recommendation, she drafted the paperwork she had requested.
When Meeka got off the phone with the lawyer, she felt a little more at peace.
Chapter Eighteen
Rick was in agony. He missed Meeka so much he did not know what to do with himself. She would not answer his calls or return his texts. He had even went over to her apartment a few times, but as soon as he said his name, she would not respond. She didn’t yell or scream, she just said nothing. Rick would have rather she scream at him, than the stone silence she gave him.
A few times Rick had found himself outside the restaurant she worked at, but he couldn’t muster the courage to go in. He also didn’t want to cause issues for her at work. She was pregnant and didn’t need any added stress. But it was his baby, he kept telling himself. He should be there for her, but she did not want it that way. Rick had told his lawyers just to settle with her. They were upset, but he already knew what would happen when it went through. He didn’t care if he couldn’t work as a doctor anymore. He loved his job, but he loved Meeka more.
His lawyer called him later that evening and he thought he was going to hear that she had signed the settlement papers.
“Rick, it seems that the lawsuit has been dropped. I just got all the paperwork from the lawyer, though it looks like she has sent you her legal fees bill. Once that is paid, the lawsuit will be dropped.”
“What?”
“I know, I can’t believe it either. This is great news Rick! You won’t have to quit your job and the insurance premium shouldn’t go up that much.”
Rick breathed a sigh of relief and his heart filled with hope. He hoped that her dropping the lawsuit meant she forgave him. He didn’t want to get his hopes up too high, but he figured it was definitely a step in the right direction. Rick was tempted to call her, but he didn’t want it to look like he was gloating. He could not take the chance of making things worse between the two of them, though he wondered how much worse it could actually get. He did not exist as far as Meeka was concerned.
He had one of his colleagues look into where Meeka was going for her prenatal care and he spent the afternoon looking over her charts. She had an ultrasound schedule the next week and he wanted to be there with her to see what the sex would be. Either way he would be happy, if it was a boy or a girl.

Malik was not letting it go. He asked his mother about Rick almost every day and every time he mentioned his name, she wanted to cry. For a child so young, Malik was very opinionated and he had a bit of an old soul already showing with an understanding far beyond his young years. He was making her feel bad and she was getting frustrated trying to explain it. As smart as he was, there was a lot of the emotional spectrum that he was just not privy to yet.
There were a lot of things that Malik knew about that happened with his father, but Meeka had not had the heart to tell him about Rick being the doctor that failed him. She never knew how to say that to him, but in her frustration, she blurted it out.
“You don’t understand Malik. Rick was the one that killed your father.”
As soon as Meeka said the words, she regretted them. The look in his eyes changed and she was not prepared for the strong reaction that he had.
“He shot him!”
“No baby, of course not. He was the doctor that worked on daddy in the hospital.”
“Well I am sure he tried his best mom. You are telling me all the time that no one is perfect. I miss Rick.”
“Me too baby.”
It hit her then that she had been so wrong and was really just looking for someone to blame. Her emotions had taken over for her, and it didn't help that her hormones were out of control due to the pregnancy. It was sad that it took her young son to make her realize it. With everything on the table, Malik just wanted Rick back in his life and so did Meeka. She still wondered why he didn’t tell her, but she figured that her overreaction was part of the reason. There was also the lawsuit in court. It was just all too complicated, but all she wanted to do was call Rick. She just missed him.
