Seldom do I have the opportunity to teach what I write, but happily the composition of this Poe biography coincided with the Poe seminar I teach every other year. Since Poe’s life and work prompted many lively classroom discussions, I would like to thank the students in that seminar: Lauren Brandeberry, Lauren Burn, Jennifer Canham, Malory Craft, James Dickson, Kara Evans, Cheryl Phillips, Jennifer Pruit, Katie Shinn, Heidi Silcox, William Totten and Drew White. At Reaktion Books, I would like to thank Martha Jay for asking me to undertake this project and for seeing it through the press. I would also like to thank Michael Leaman for his helpful suggestions and Ian Blenkinsop for his patience. As always, I thank my wife Myung-Sook for her encouragement and support throughout the composition of this volume.
