Chapter 1: What is
Blogging About?
Blogging is about
writing information and getting paid for it. If you
’
ve never done it before you probably don
’
t really get what that means but it
’
s simple enough to understand. When you
‘
blog
’
about something it
means you
’
re creating articles and almost diary-like entries
that usually about a certain topic. This isn
’
t
always true, some people will blog about a variety of subject, but most will
stick with one thing they know a lot about. You also will want to make sure
that you
’
re focusing on something you enjoy because if you
’
re trying to make money you want to stick with that
topic.
You are able to create
your own website entirely for your blog or you can create a webpage on another
website. If you really want to make the most money from
blogging
you
’
ll want to get a website with a decent host. There
are several hosting companies that will provide you with a website of your own
but keep in mind that the better companies are going to charge you some money.
You do have the ability to start with a cheaper blog and then transfer it to
another host, however this is going to take more time and be more difficult. It
may also be more confusing for your readers if you already have a fan base when
you switch the information over.
Now we
’
re getting a little ahead of ourselves so let
’
s back up a bit. A blog can be about absolutely
anything you want. If you enjoy
writing
then you can
write a blog about how to write. If you like
dogs
you
can blog about that. Choose something that you are highly knowledgeable about
and that you can provide information for others about. You want to have something
to offer anyone who comes to read your blog after all. If you don
’
t they aren
’
t
likely to continue reading your blog.
Once you
’
ve created the topic that you want to use
it
’
s
time to start blogging. What you do in a blog is create articles that are based
on the specific topic that you
’
ve chosen. You want to
focus on things that are going to get your readers interested in your topic.
Talk to them about your experiences, your knowledge or even teach them courses.
You
’
ll be able to explain a lot of information to them
and you may actually be surprised how much of a response you get.
Plus
you get to have fun.
Typically
those who are blogging will also keep track of
their blogs so that they can write several times a month or even several times
a week.
Generally
the more blog posts you write the
better your readership is going to be. That
’
s
because your readers want to learn more and they are going to show up whenever
they can count on new information (so try to keep it regular). If they know you
aren
’
t going to post frequently or they can
’
t count on when you
’
re
going to
post
you
’
ll
find yourself losing viewers.
Chapter
2: Starting the Blog
If
you want to start a
blog
you need to come up with your
topic first. Think about all the things you know and really like. This is your
basis for creating a blog. Once you
’
ve
come up with a few ideas start thinking of some sample titles. Once you get
more advanced you may be able to start multiple blogs but when you
’
re just beginning you want to make sure you focus
all your attention on one blog. Anymore and you might get distracted, confused
or even struggle to keep up the information you need for your readers.
Look
over the list of potential topics that you have and try to figure out which is
going to be the best. You want to pick something that
’
s going to give you plenty of opportunity to write
more titles and you also want to make sure that you have a good basis to start
with. From there you
’
ll be able to develop
what your basis is going to be and you
’
ll
be able to better understand what your reader base is going to be.
Once
you
’
ve created the topic you need to find the host that
you want to use. Make sure that you choose something that is going to give you
a lot of benefits but isn
’
t going to give you too
many ads (which can detract from your reader base). This is not going to be
cheap but it doesn
’
t have to be extremely expensive either. Be willing
to compromise a little bit. You need to invest in yourself to really start off
your blog.
Next,
make sure you spend some time creating your website. You want to make it look
interesting and user-friendly. Make sure that you have headings for different
pages and that they make sense. Be sure that your entire website has a cohesive
look. You don
’
t want it to look cheap or to look bland and boring.
These things are going to lose you a lot of readers and they are definitely
going to hurt your ability to make a profit as well (once you get there).
The
best thing you can do is look at other websites in the same genre. Look at what
other people are posting and how they
’
ve
set up your website. That
’
s how you
’
re going to understand what your readers are really
looking for. It
’
s also going to help you make your website look like
it belongs in the genre.
Create
your first blog post as more of an introduction to yourself and your blog in
general. You don
’
t want to just jump into a lot of information
because you
’
ll confuse your readers who won
’
t know why they should trust you or what right you
have to tell them anything about the topic. So instead, you want to create an
initial blog post that is going to introduce you and explain how and why you
are the person that they should trust to learn more about your topic. Use it as
an opportunity and then make sure that this post is there for anyone that may
show up later on to read your blog, after you
’
ve
established yourself. It may turn into your
‘
about
me
’
page, for example.
The
post should explain all of your qualifications such as education or work
experience. It should also explain how you gain your information, whether this
is a hobby or firsthand knowledge in some other way. Then explain why you are
interested in the subject and give a brief overview of just a few of the things
that you have knowledge about. This is going to help you gain additional
readers because they are going to believe that you have the type of information
they are looking for. This makes them more inclined to come back and check for
new posts frequently. You may even want to follow up this introduction post with
your first post about your topic.
Make
sure that your first real information post is giving some information that is
interesting or unknown. The more interesting the information that you give the
more you
’
re going to get repeat readers. That
’
s because they realize that the information you have
is actually going to be valuable. Even if they already know what you
’
ve talked about they will realize that not everyone
does and this makes them believe that you really are the expert that you claim
to be. You also get more attention from beginners in the field because they
realize your information is pretty great as well. Having more readers is going
to translate into getting you even more money, but only if you
’
re careful and follow along with some of the other
information we
’
re going to talk about later.
