Chase lowered his head and whispered in her ear. “I’m sorry. What happened was my fault.” His fingers tightened. “But I still can’t let you go.”

Megan smiled, heart beating faster, feeling a rush of joy course through her. “Okay.” She slid her arms around his neck and linked her hands together.

They danced. He moved with grace and strength and didn’t let her go when the next song kicked on.

Lights twinkled above them and over Chase’s shoulder, Megan caught surprised stares from some of her classmates. She adjusted her grip so one of her hands rested on the flat of Chase’s shoulder blade.
Yep, he’s with me, and I’m surprised too.

“Maybe I could drive you home? When the dance ends.”

Megan’s eyelids widened and she shook her head. “My parents don’t like me riding in Veronica’s car. What did you drive?”

Chase glanced left and twisted his mouth. “My Dad’s car.”

Veronica and Riley danced nearby, equally entwined, and Megan caught his grin. Riley looked over at the other couple, whispered something to Veronica, and released her. He jumped on stage, grabbed a microphone, and tapped the side to get everyone’s attention. “Anyone up for an after party?” The crowd cheered. “I know one that’s running all weekend long.” The cheers grew. Riley held up a cell phone and dramatically pressed the send key.

A number of ring tones sounded. Heads bent to read the text and fingers eagerly forwarded the message along. Riley tossed the cell aside and lifted his guitar.

Chase showed his cell screen to Megan, a smirk playing on his lips. “He gave out my address. Got any plans for the rest of the weekend?”
