“Oh shit, baby. Fuck.”

She gasped and coughed as she held her throat.

“An ambulance now,” Garrett yelled.

Looking up, she caught sight of Gunny standing over a body as Shane, Duke, and Teddy pulled him back.

Tears streamed down her face as Garrett lifted her into his arms.

“Baby, talk to us,” he yelled. She looked through blurred vision at Wes and Garrett.

“Can’t breathe,” she said.

“Fuck. We need help. He choked her, damn it. She can’t breathe,” Teddy yelled and the sound of more sirens filled the air. The echo of the helicopter’s rotors lessened and then she closed her eyes as darkness overtook her.

Chapter 12

Gia awoke feeling instant pain in her throat when she swallowed. She gasped and opened her eyes to see Wes and Garrett. “You’re okay, baby. You’re in the hospital,” Garrett whispered as he leaned closer.

She cringed from the pain in her throat and the soreness. When she tried to speak she sounded so hoarse.

“Don’t talk. You’re going to be okay. Let me get you some water.” Garrett lifted her up to a sitting position and she felt the headache, dizziness as she reached up to grab her head. Her lips felt swollen as she touched them.

“That fucker hit you and tried to strangle you,” Wes said as Garrett placed the straw between her lips. When she took the sip it burned.

“Fuck.” Wes raised his voice.

“Come here,” she squeaked out to him as Garrett placed the cup back down.

Wes ran his fingers through his hair. He looked so angry and upset.

“Hug,” she whispered and opened her arms to him. He glanced at Garrett and then at her before pulling her into his arms. He felt so good and she squeezed him tight then pulled him down with her.

“I love you, baby. I was so fucking scared.” She released her hold and looked into his eyes. The tears rolled down her cheek.

“It’s over.”

“I know, baby. I know.” He laid his head against her chest as she caressed his hair.

She looked at Garrett, who had his hands in his pockets and a smile on his face, showing off his dimples.

Wes stood up and she turned to Garrett with open arms. He immediately hugged her and she squeezed him tight. Then she felt the pain in her neck.

He laid her back down.

“You’re going to be sore for a while, but the doctor said you’ll heal just fine. Maybe a sore throat, a rough, scratchy voice, but otherwise you’re good.”

“Gunny?” she asked and Garrett looked at Wes. She felt her belly tighten. He was alive. She saw him standing over the body. Over Valdere.

“He’s being interviewed by the investigators.”

“Valdere?”

“Dead.”

She closed her eyes and tried to get rid of the images in her head. The door to the room opened and Gunny walked in. When he saw that she was awake he went to her side immediately and took her hand into his own.

“How are you, darling? Are you feeling okay? What hurts?”

She looked at Wes and then Garrett before locking gazes with Gunny. “Hug,” she whispered in a hoarse voice and Gunny hugged her as Garrett and Wes smiled.

* * * *

Sammy stood in Garrett’s kitchen and helped Gia with pouring chips into a bowl. The Cowboys were playing the Giants and the house was filled with friends and family.

“So, are you making any progress?” Gia asked Sammy in her hoarse voice.

“My God, woman, it just isn’t fair. I wish I had your voice right now. It seems a sex call operator might get those guys’ attention. Neither one will look at me,” Sammy complained.

Gia chuckled.

“They’re looking, just not while you’re watching,” Gia said, her voice still raw and husky. She knew what Sammy meant about her sounding like some sex call operator. The men had been carrying on about how turned on they were. The doctor said she might never fully recover her normal voice or it could heal completely. She thought they were trying to make her feel better about the possibility. But, after a few of the other guys made some comments, her men weren’t too happy about her talking aloud to anyone but them.

“Are they really looking when I’m not watching?” Sammy asked, sounding excited.

“Yes. Now let’s move. I want to see the Giants win.”

“What? How could you?” Gia smiled. “I’m messing with the guys.”

Gia walked into the room with Sammy and caught sight of Lee and Shane checking out Sammy. This time Sammy noticed but acted cool and unknowing as she took a seat next to two friends of Duke’s in SWAT. Oh yeah, she was trying to get Shane and Lee jealous. As she walked by Lee spoke to her.

“I’ll take those, honey.”

“Sure, sugar,” she replied and they all looked at her.

“What?” she asked.

“Lucky bastards,” Shane stated as he shook his head and the other guys laughed. She felt the arm wrap around her waist and then Gunny’s lips against her ear.

“Watch who you call sugar in that voice, baby.”

She smiled as she reached back and touched his cheek.

“Okay, sugar.”

He pulled her into his arms and kissed her hard on the mouth.

“Will you two cut that out? We’re trying to watch the game,” Lee yelled as Gunny released her only for Garrett to pull her into an embrace.

“We can’t help but keep kissing her and hugging her. We nearly lost Gia,” Garrett said aloud.

Gia hugged him tight.

“It’s kind of nice having things back to normal and sharing good times with friends,” Wes said.

“It means a lot to me, too, having all of you here. I suddenly have a family and good friends. I feel safe for the first time in a very long time,” Gia added.

“We’re glad you feel safe with us. We told you that we would protect you,” Gunner replied.

“Sure as shit did. The three of us got to Gia in the nick of time. I’d say keep her around. Her only fault is her bad taste in a football team,” Wes teased and they all laughed. Gia gave Wes the evil eye but smiled.

“Didn’t we talk about you wearing this Giants jersey?”

She rolled her eyes. “Are we back at this again, Garrett?”

She felt his hand caress over her ass before squeezing it and then she felt Wes’s hands on her waist and his mouth next to her ear.

“You better be good. Now sit down and watch the game.”

Garrett lowered to the couch, taking Gia along with him onto his lap.

The Giants scored and everyone made a noise.

“Yes!” Gia yelled out. They all looked at her.

“What? Y’all know I’m a Giants fan,” she said in her version of a Texas accent accompanied by her hoarse, sexy voice.

“Damn that voice is sexy. If she talks like that in the bedroom, who cares if she’s a Giants fan,” Duke stated aloud and the guys chuckled.

Gia threw a pillow at his head. He caught it and smiled.

“Don’t get them started or they’ll get into a fight again,” Lee said.

“They do that shit on purpose,” Teddy added.

“What?” Gia asked.

“Well, New York, you know what they say about make-up sex,” Wes teased and she gasped as the others laughed.

“Oh really?” she replied and Wes smiled.

“That jersey has to go,” Gunny said firmly and in a tone that said an argument was brewing.

Gia raised her hands up and wiggled her hips on Garrett’s lap.

“Go Giants, go Giants, go, go, go, Giants!

The others yelled out, “Ohhh,” knowing that she had the last laugh. She smiled wide as Garrett pulled her tighter in his arms and both Gunny and Wes began to tickle her. She laughed to near tears thinking that she was the luckiest woman alive and Garrett, Gunny, and Wes aroused her, excited her, and made her so incredibly happy, that she would do anything for them. She never wanted to let them go and knew that she would love them forever. As the thoughts filled her mind she cuddled close and stared at the three of them surrounding her.

Who has the obsession now?

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

People seem to be more interested in my name than where I get my ideas for my stories from. So I might as well share the story behind my name with all my readers.

My momma was born and raised in New Orleans. At the age of twenty, she met and fell in love with an Irishman named Patrick Riley Dwyer. Needless to say, the family was a bit taken aback by this as they hoped she would marry a family friend. It was a modern day arranged marriage kind of thing and my momma downright refused.

Being that my momma’s families were descendents of the original English speaking Southerners, they wanted the family blood line to stay pure. They were wealthy and my father’s family was poor.

Despite attempts by my grandpapa to make Patrick leave and destroy the love between them, my parents married. They recently celebrated their sixtieth wedding anniversary.

I am one of six children born to Patrick and Lynn Dwyer. I am a combination of both Irish and a true Southern belle. With a name like Dixie Lynn Dwyer it’s no wonder why people are curious about my name.

Just as my parents had a love story of their own, I grew up intrigued by the lifestyles of others. My imagination as well as my need to stray from the straight and narrow made me into the woman I am today.
