CHAPTER ONE
“Oh my God,
you
are like the best friend ever!” Sherina Jones declared, as she stuffed some more chocolate cake into her mouth, her brown eyes watering with the force.
Deborah Canter, her best friend of twenty-one years, shook her head, laughing as she threw Sherina a half-amused, half-irritated look.
“Girl, you’re a mess. You’ve got chocolate cake coming out of every orifice on your face. Ewwww,” Deb said.
“Well can you blame me? It’s not every day my best friend tells me an incredible story of how she got caught hooking up with someone at her office Christmas party...and by her boss no less! I can just see your face when he jokingly asked if you were up to making it a threesome!” Sherina retorted, collapsing into fresh fits of laughter.
“Yeah, I can see how that might be worth a laugh or two,” Deb commented dryly, her eyes focused on the road as she navigated the busy road from behind the wheel of her rather snazzy Mercedez Benz convertible.
Deb’s short red hair fluttered wildly in the wind as she drove and even though her sunshade was half-covering her entire face, Sherina knew her friend’s green eyes were twinkling behind her specs. It was one of the first things that had attracted her to the other girl when they had first met under a large pine tree at the ripe old age of six. Sherina had just moved to Ohio with her parents and she didn't have a single friend in the little community until Deb took her under her wing and began to introduce her around to the other kids. The subtle threat in Deb’s voice had warned the other kids to be friends with the new girl or else...
Sherina sighed now, her hair extensions fluttering in the wind as she shook her head in nostalgia. Deb really had been there forever for her; and she was as loyal as they come. She stood up for Sherina anywhere, any day, anytime. She did have a bit of a temper though; probably from all that red hair and her Irish origins. Sherina herself had really cute dimples in both cheeks that made people automatically smile back whenever she smiled at them. Her eyes were the color of hot chocolate, or so Deb said frequently, her skin was pure ebony and she was curvy and shapely with legs that seemed to go on for miles. Sherina also had a nice waist, baby soft skin, and breasts that were so huge she was amazed she could stand straight sometimes. But like most women, she still was sometimes concerned about her appearance.
“You look hot today,” Deb commented, as though on cue.
Sherina smiled; sometimes it was almost as though Deb could hear her thoughts. “I always look hot.”
“Yeah. Modesty never was your strong suit,” Deb said rolling her eyes.
Sherina smiled to herself as her eyes drifted down to her long, slim, feminine fingers and the huge, sparkling diamond ring on her left hand. She was marrying Darren Rowe, her childhood sweetheart in just seven days and she was so excited she could barely breathe. Just thinking of Darren, his tall athletic body, his blonde good looks, his warm smile, and his large masculine hands , made her feel hot all over. Then when she recalled the sweet words he had whispered as he kissed her goodbye before his business trip two nights ago her thighs clenched in anticipation. She couldn’t wait to see him again.
“Thinking of Darren? If I were you, I would think of my job interview!” Deb chided, her eyes fastened onto the road as she sped towards the airport.
Sherina rolled her eyes in exasperation. Sometimes she swore she didn’t have a secret thought from Deb. The woman could read her like a freaking book!
She had applied for a job in New York at Christmas and received a call just two weeks later to attend the interview this morning. Without hesitation, Deb had offered to drive her to the airport and used the opportunity to talk her ear off for loving chocolate cake.
“Cake!” she screamed, bolting upright in her seat.
“Yeah I know,” Deb said. “I just watched you scarf down a fat giant one without offering me a piece.”
“No, my wedding cake. It was getting delivered today,” Sherina cried, panic creeping in.
“Oh chill. I will pick it up. Anything else?”
“The florist.”
“That’s me. The hydrangeas for the hall are all set to go and yes, for the umpteenth time, your bouquet is made up completely of white orchids. I picked them myself. Next?”
“I’m nervous Deb. What if I do get the job? It’s so far away from you and Darren,” Sherina said, finally voicing her real fear.
Silence reigned for a bit, telling her more effectively than words that Deb was also more worried about her leaving than she was letting on.
Just when she was opening her mouth to ask her friend to turn the car around, Deb replied, “Please! It’s a job as the PA of Paul Whatshisname. He’s a Wall Street guru which means he’s probably one of those accounting geeks; so relax, you’ll never get it.”
“Deb!” Sherina cried looking over at her friend in stupefaction, her fear completely forgotten.
“What? It’s the truth. I mean, I love you and all, but Math is not your thing. Now if you had said Vogue Paris or W or even Cosmopolitan I would be peeing in my pants coz we both know they got nothing on you when it comes to fashion.”
Sherina grinned. Annoying as she was, Deb was right. She loved fashion and everything about it but give her accounting or anything to do with figures and she was ready to run for the hills. She’d merely applied for this job as a PA to Paul Wingman as a dare at Christmas; she’d never expected to be shortlisted. She had majored in Business Administration but her true passion was everything fashion! Butterflies knotted in her belly as the airport came into view.
“Well if I do get the job nothing says I have to take it; I mean, Darren’s practice is here and we’re getting hitched in just seven days!”
“Darren is a lawyer honey, his practice is everywhere so don’t you use him as an excuse. It’s okay to confess you’re gonna miss me you know,” Deb added, tongue in cheek.
Sherina laughed, relaxing back against the backrest of her seat as the last of the tension drained out of her. She didn’t
have
to take the job and who said she was going to get it anyway? Few moments later, she was up in the air on her way to an interview for a job she wasn’t certain she wanted.
***
Sherina Jones cleared the departure lounge of the Columbus, Ohio airport in a daze; she had met Paul Wingman in person at his New York office and he had been so enthusiastic about taking her on as a personal assistant, he had actually pumped her hand repeatedly. She had gotten the job! And just when she had opened her mouth to turn it down, he had informed her that the salary was in the six figures! An absolutely ridiculous amount for a PA role, but she had heard that he liked to take care of his employees.
Her mind whirled as she strolled towards a waiting taxi. She had thought she would need to sleep over in New York but evidently she’d been the only person shortlisted for the job interview and just two hours after arriving in New York, she was on her way back to Ohio! She had called Deb at least a thousand times to come get her from the airport but she was not picking up. Darren was scheduled to return from his trip tonight which was why she had rushed on home. She would prepare him a special meal she decided, before easing him into discussions about a job in another city. But first she had to stop by Deb's place to make sure she had taken care of all the wedding errands.
“Thanks” she mumbled absentmindedly as the cabbie helped her with her hand luggage. She gave him the address for Deb’s house and leaned back tiredly against the headrest, as the cab pulled smartly away from the curb. Her eyes drifted closed for just a second, or so she thought, but the next thing she knew, the taxi driver was shaking her awake none too gently.
“I’ll take that fare now ma'am,” he said in a tone that told her he thought she was trying to get out of paying him.
She stared at him in confusion as she began to dig around in her purse for change and of course, she had just a couple of twenties and a hundred.
The man glared right back at her, “By all means take your time. FYI, the meter’s running so if I were you, I’d get going.”
She rolled her eyes stomping from the vehicle, telling the cabbie she had to go inside to get change from her friend. The man was impossible; and she had only just noticed his cab was old and ugly, she thought uncharitably. She was so annoyed that she didn’t bother knocking when she got to Deb’s door; she just used her key, swinging the door wide as she walked in looking around wildly for her friend.
She was already in the living room when she noticed the low moans and grunts as well as the sighs of pleasure coming from the couch as well as the protruding pair of bare legs hanging in the air. From her vantage point, she could see the muscles in the man’s back flexing repeatedly as he thrust into Deb again and again. Deb’s head was thrown back, her eyes shut as she moaned in her lover’s arms.
Sherina gasped involuntarily as realization hit; she had interrupted Deb in the middle of a booty call! Deb would never forgive her; she thought frantically looking for a hole to dive into.
Her gasp must have alerted the couple on the couch though because they sprang guiltily apart, ceasing their lovemaking as they turned as one to stare up at her. In that moment, everything Sherina knew about the world was destroyed; the man on the couch with her best friend was her fiancée. The man on the couch with her best friend was her childhood sweetheart who was also to be her husband in
seven
short days!
