Preface

O
ur kind has existed a long time before humans did. We watched them come into our world making it their own. And we lived among them because we must. Without questions. There was no use in killing them. That might have given us away.

The human kind would have slaughtered us if they’d known. What choice did we have then? What choice do we have now? To live among them is our only choice.

The Moon as our Goddess and the Great Spirit who blessed our kind so that we may change at will. But not always with the full moon, like in all the legends that make us out to be beasts. Our numbers have lessened as the years pass by.

There are still some half breeds and Pure Bloods. We’ve blended in with the human kind to save our own skins. Some humans married into our clan knowingly, and some of them don’t know that they did. There are those select few who do know our secrets, and they accept us for who we are and what we are. They all keep their mouths shut to keep our kind safe. They believe in us, and believe that we have a greater purpose.

Our leaders struggle to keep us secret and to keep us safe. They keep us hidden in the night when we run in the forest. We are still fallen prey to the mortal men-- those who are smart enough to catch on. And no matter where we go, there are always those who are going to catch on. We still try to find our place in this world as time keeps ticking on. Are some things just not meant to be?

I believe that everything happens for many reasons. A reason in it’s time. Nothing is truly pointless. I have learned that the hard way. Nothing is wrong, and nothing is right. And what I used to believe is that there is only destiny and the Moon. That is if one should choose to follow the right path, you’ll reach the true destination and find your fate there.

My people believe in our legends. They believe in the prophecies of our ancestors. They believe that your fate is written within the stars and that every wolf that howls has a different story to tell them from the past. My people believe in magic, spirits, life and death.

We have honor, pride and we have each other.

My life isn’t what you would call ordinarily normal, and things are never what they seem. There is always more to it than meets the eye.

When you’re a child, you believe in magic and wondrous things that are out there. When the magic becomes your life and it becomes you, you will then wish that you had never believed in the magic in the first place.

All of those people that wish they had some of this in their lives are stupid. To will this into you life is a complete insanity plea. And everything that comes along with it you will wish then that you could go back to that very minute when you willed it, and take it back.

To all those people who want so badly to be a Vampyre, Werewolf, or anything supernatural --
you
should be committed. I speak from hundreds of years of experience. Everyday I wish that I was never born in to this. This is not the life you want. Stay Mortal. Stay human.

Don’t go seeking out the supernatural or anything un-natural. There’s no doubt that there are mysteries to this world, but you shouldn’t go looking for trouble. It’ll get you killed or put those you love into danger.

When the magic and darkness takes everything that you have ever had, and everyone that you ever loved is killed before your eyes. You will never want to know magic again.

That is my life. That
was
my family. I was raised to believe in the stories of my people, and of all their legends and prophecies that existed. The darkness and the demons, and everything else that came along with it-- I believed. I wanted so much for these stories to be my life. In the end I found out, there is no such thing as fairytales.

When I was eleven years old, I had a dream that I was chasing those fairytales outside in the forest near the village by the lakeside shore. I was with both of my parents. They were walking hand in hand smiling at each other. You could just see the love in their eyes. They were amazing together; they just belonged together-- like they had each found the missing piece to there puzzle.

Then there was a deep strange growling noise that came from the darkness of the trees above. I had looked up to see a dark cloaked figure descending from the tree tops. The figure made no sound as it hit the ground. I was frozen in my tracks, and with one flick of his wrist, the figure killed both of my parents with his black handled dagger covered in ancient runes.

It leaned down to my parents removing its hood. It was a man with sharp sword like teeth. Black hair and red eyes and his skin was as pale as the morning sun. He put his fingers to the dagger wounds and tasted each of their blood.

Still frozen where I stood, I couldn’t even scream. Though I must’ve made a noise because he turned towards me grinning, “I can taste their magick.”

I started running and fell over my feet; they felt like there were being weighed down by cement blocks. I looked up and he was standing over me, “I will be back for you child.” He disappeared into the darkness that crept with the shadows of the night crawling inward from the blanketing skies.

When I awoke, it was my father who had been shaking me away from my screaming fit. I would have never been able to escape that nightmare had he not been able shake me out of it.

The truth in the reality of my life is that I had never even known my mother, and that dream had felt so real that I thought I had.

Haunting Blood Tracks,

1646.

“Midway on your life’s journey, I found myself in dark woods, the right road lost, to tell about these woods is hard--so tangled and rough, and savage that thinking of it now, I feel the old fear stirring, death is hardly more bitter.” - Dante, The Inferno, Canto I Trans. Robert Pinsky

“Who the hell are you?” I asked this girl standing before me.

“Does it concern you?” We both had our daggers out towards one another.

“More than you know.” My eyes squinted and flashed black forcing her to tell me who she was with out her knowing. “What is your name?”

“Scarlet.” She put her dagger down and away back into its sheath and then looked back up at me.

Looking around there were bodies, at least ten, surrounding us. Dead rogues who I had started killing, and then she joined in. I didn’t know who this girl was, but I would like to know where she came from and she tracked these rogue Vampyres.

“I’m Angel.” I put my dagger down, but didn’t put it away. I trusted no one. She looked me up and down with the biggest eyes and a grin on her face.

“Thee Angel?” She questioned almost grinning, “My prayers have been answered!”
What is she talking about?

I rolled my eyes, “Thee.” I stated as I started looking around at the bodies trying to avoid any eye contact with her.

Twenty three years old and in my prime. I’m gaining power and strength as every day goes by. Waiting and watching for the scent of blood to linger to my nose, and to swell my throat. It makes my whole body ache. Patience really is a virtue being what I am. I’m Angel. Angelica Victoria Fowler.

Its the scent of blood and the kill drives me forward. It’s what I live for. It was blood that was there in my making, and I’m sure it will be there in my ending. I have and still do travel the world killing the very creature that would have me destroyed. Vampyres. Nasty and vile creatures they are. The very bloodsuckers who had wished us dead. We are the hybrids. And that is what I am. Part Vampyre and part Werewolf. They want us for their side, or they want us dead. No one is quite sure.

Our loyalty remains with the werewolves, and that is the way it will always be. The Vampyres are jealous about that; because it was the werewolves who took us in when no one else wanted us. They gave us a home and families and gave way for other hybrids to be born. I was the first to be brought into this world. The very first hybrid. An un-wanted creature to this world.

The Vampyre clan that hunts us is called the Black Thorn. They are a very powerful clan that is now biting and spreading their disease of bloodlust and hunger. Many rogues are the result to there negligence and carelessness. They terrorized the people of the cities, raping, biting, killing and slaughtering the innocent who get in there path. Wrong place wrong time kind of thing. One would think that if someone is going to make these beasts, the least they could do is have the decency to look after what they had created; to reduce any exposure. But they do not care about these rogues.

I left my village, after great resistance from my people, in search of these members to try and control their population and find the members of the Black Thorn themselves. I’m not the only hunter-tracker in the world though. There are many others. Hybrids just like me, werewolves, and even humans who are discovering the world of the supernatural are hunting these creatures and attempting to kill them.
