Elizabeth woke in bed.

“You were asleep for three days. I thought I’d lost you.” Robert touched her hair and face as if he couldn’t believe she was still there. “You lost a great deal of blood. Adeline and Janet saved you.”

She tried to speak, but her throat was dry. Instead she pointed to the pitcher.

“Here, love.” Robert handed her a cup of water.

“Now I know why I felt so creeped out in that chamber in my time. I almost died there.”

He had sent everyone away. Told them when she woke he would let them know, but he could not leave her side to tell everyone the glad tidings. Not yet.

“I was an arse. Again.” He kept touching her, unable to believe she was still here. “What happened when you faded? Did you go back?”

Elizabeth closed her eyes for a few moments. When she opened them, they were full of tears. “I saw you. You were with me.”

Fear flowed through him again. “I would not let you go. Even when I could no longer feel you, I held on.” He thought about what had happened. “I saw fantastical things. Brightly colored carriages with wheels but no horses, and people were riding in them. There was an enormous metal bird in the sky. And the sounds. So much noise I thought my head would split in two.”

He wiped his own eyes, clearing the dust from them.

She grasped his hand in hers. “When everything happened, somehow I knew why you wagered with Radford. I know you did not mean to hurt me, but to save the girls, like I asked.”

She took another sip of water. “I remember pulling against the waves of time. There were so many choices, and all I had to do was choose a time and place, but I knew deep in my heart I belonged with you. I could feel you holding my hand. Hear you whispering in my ear to come home to you. So I chose the life I wanted and I fell back to float on the current of time towards your voice. Towards home.”

Robert left not a bit of skin un-kissed. He marveled at the softness of her lips and skin.

“Forgive me and I’ll never do anything so foolish again.”

“You will, but I forgive you anyway.”

He lowered his mouth to hers, and she closed her eyes and surrendered to him. Robert nibbled her lips, tasting her mouth and skin. A spark of what he imagined lightning felt like coursed between them, and a rainbow of color filled the room, reminding him of her hair before she had hidden the colors. Robert growled deep in his throat as he caressed her with his mouth, wordlessly telling her over and over how much he loved her.

When he broke the kiss, he whispered, “Actions, not words—isn’t that what you said, lady?” Robert met her gaze. “But I shall say the words anyway so you cannot pretend not to know. I love you, Elizabeth. With all my heart and soul.”

“I love you, too.” She put her arms around his neck and held on. “Forever my knight. Forever.”

About the Author

Cynthia Luhrs is the author of the ghostly Shadow Walker novels, the Merriweather Sisters and Thornton Brothers Time Travel novels set in medieval England, and a new suspense novel, There Was A Little Girl. She grew up reading every book she could get her hands on. The librarian knew her by sight with her stack of books piled high on the counter. A military brat, she was always the new kid in school but made friends quickly over the love of a good book. Her idea of a perfect day is no interruptions and the freedom to live in her head all day, writing the next book, an icy beverage beside her as both tiger cats sit on the keyboard and demand treats.
