Jamie woke wrapped in Alex's arms, his body pressed flush against her back. It was only just morning, the light coming in through the blinds soft and grey with the beginnings of dawn. The baby monitor on the nightstand beside her was quiet. The twins usually rose with the sun. Jamie closed her eyes, taking advantage of the silence.
It would be nice, she thought, just to go back to sleep for a little while. These days, lazy mornings were a few and far between; it had been a while since she'd had the luxury of waking up and then curling up and heading back into dreams. She shifted and Alex's arms tightened around her, letting her feel the press of his hips against the curve of her backside, and she suddenly thought of something that would be even better than falling back to sleep in the predawn light.
“Alex,” she said, voice pitched just loud enough to start pulling him out of sleep. “Alex, baby, wake up.” She rolled her hips against his, and he breathed out against her neck, the warmth of his breath making her shiver. There was no way that she was going back to sleep.
“Alex,” she said again, and this time she reached back into the tight space between them, rubbing the heel of her hand against his half-hard cock through the fabric of his underwear.
That got his attention.
“Wha’?” His voice was slurred with sleep.
“Wake up,” Jamie said, rocking the heel of her hand against him and dragging one of his hands down between her thighs to feel where she was already wet and wanting.
He paused, and then his hand was cupping her over her panties, pressing back with just enough pressure to make her moan. He was, quite suddenly, very awake.
“Well, well, well,” he said, breath washing over the nape of her neck again. “What do we have here?”
“Someone who would be very interested in wearing less clothing right now,” Jamie answered, squirming around in his arms until she faced him, her own arms sliding around his neck and their bodies pressed together from chest to hip.
Alex parted her legs with one of his thighs, and Jamie rocked down against it, the friction making pleasure spark along her spine.
“I think I could probably accommodate that,” Alex said, leaning in to kiss her.
They didn't bother getting fully undressed. Alex pulled down her underwear, and Jamie kicked them off her ankles, and then he was rolling over on top of her. She pulled him out of his boxer briefs, running her hand along the hard, hot length of him before she parted her legs and let him slip between them, sliding inside her with a slow, smooth thrust.
“Fuck,” she breathed. “Alex.”
He kissed her again, their bodies moving together with the same languid want as their tongues. Jamie wrapped her arms around him to hold him closer.
She had forgotten how good morning sex was, waking up to share lazy pleasure with your lover. They were going to have to find some way to do more of it, because she wasn't going to go without it for so long again.
Alex's mouth moved down along her jaw, over her throat, and Jamie tipped her head back with a shuddering little sigh.
He’s so perfect
, she thought, feeling him move inside her, one of his hands spanning the curve of her hip. It was something that she thought often, but the realization always struck her again at times like this one.
“Good morning,” Alex said when the kiss broke.
Jamie giggled. “It is,” she said, the words catching on the hitch in her breath as she tipped her hips up to take him deeper. The motion was still slow, still so easy, like they had all the time in the world. “It's a very good morning.”
Sooner or later, Jamie knew, they were going to have to get up and deal with the day, as the twins weren't likely to let them lie around in bed for long, but for the moment all that mattered was the two of them, wrapped around each other as the sun rose outside the windows.
“We need to do this more often.”
Jamie just nodded, and dragged Alex down for another kiss.
The pleasure built slowly, not burning hot but like warm water, filling up the spaces along her spine at the bottom of her stomach, making her muscles tighten with anticipation. Alex rocked against her, and Jamie moved to meet him, to take every inch that she could get. She wanted all of him. Always.
“I love you,” she breathed.
Alex's fingers curled a little closer around her hip. “I love you, too, Jamie.”
They were getting close. She could feel him, too, the way that he was coiling tight with the pleasure. The need just under his skin.
“Come on,” she said. “Take me, baby. I want it. I want to feel you.”
His pace picked up. Not enough to be fast, or hard, but enough to make her gasp and moan. He groaned over her.
“Going to come with me?” he managed, the words rough like he was forcing them out of his throat.
“Yes,” Jamie answered. “Yes. Alex.”
He rocked in again, and the slow waves of pleasure were filling her. And then she was sinking into them, her whole body awash with the heat, and she whispered his name as she came apart under him. Alex panted, gasped, and came with her.

Later, cleaned up and in the kitchen, Jamie couldn't seem to wipe the smile off her face. Alex was setting the twins up in their highchairs while she made breakfast, and she still felt warm and heavy with contented lassitude after their time together. She found herself glancing over her shoulder to watch her husband as he let Lilli and Benton grab at his hands and teased them with funny faces.
How had she ever gotten so lucky? He was the best man she'd ever met, and he was hers. For good. It wasn't a life she could have ever imagined having a few years ago, lost in her family's disdain and her own self-consciousness. But it had still happened. And here she was, making breakfast in an enormous kitchen for a man who loved her and loved their children. It couldn't get any better.
“If you wind them up,” she said, “you know they're not going to pay any attention to their food.”
Alex looked up a little guiltily. “Sure they will,” he said. “They'll be just fine, baby.”
“Uh-huh.” Jamie didn't believe him for a minute. She knew exactly how they got if they were excited before meals. And Alex knew, too. But she couldn't even make herself be truly annoyed with him. Not when he was having such a good time. That, and the sound of the children giggling made it really hard to be anything but happy.
Shaking her head, Jamie pulled the eggs off the stove and dished them out onto plates, breaking them up into smaller bits to cool for the babies. She added toast and bacon to her plate and Alex’s, and carried all of the plates over to the table.
“You’re going to be a terrible influence on them.”
Alex looked at her like he had no idea what she was talking about. “I don't know what you mean.”
She laughed. “You know exactly what I mean.”
“Mama!” Lilli exclaimed, slapping her hand against the tray of her highchair, and Jamie turned to look at her. She babbled happily about something that was only sort of words.
“Hungry?” Jamie asked, sliding some of the cut up eggs and toast onto the tray for her, and then some for Benton. Lilli didn't answer; she was too busy grabbing a handful of food and stuffing as much of it into her mouth as she could at one time. “If you do that you're going to have a hard time chewing, you know. Eat a little slower.”
Lilli, of course, didn't understand what she was saying and didn't really care about eating any slower. Benton was taking slightly smaller handfuls than his sister, watching both of his parents with wide blue eyes as he ate.
“As soon as they're old enough to know how cute they are,” Jamie said, taking a seat at the table, “they're going to be holy terrors.”
Alex laughed. “That's one of the disadvantages of having such a gorgeous mother, I think.”
“And a handsome father,” Jamie added.
“That, too,” Alex agreed, grinning across the table at her. He took a bite of eggs and swallowed before he spoke again. “What's the plan for today?”
“I thought that we might take them out,” Jamie said. “Maybe to the park? Or maybe somewhere that they don't go almost every day with Brianna. Somewhere fun. I'd like to actually have a nice, relaxing weekend now that we have the opportunity for them.”
She almost knocked on the wood of the table. If she'd been a little more superstitious, she might have. They hadn't had any trouble beyond the ordinary in more than a month, and she really wanted to keep it that way. With Paul helping out in the senior advisor position, things had actually been running smoothly enough at the company that Jamie thought Alex might hand over a little more of his responsibility and start coming home a little earlier at night.
“I don't see anything wrong with the park,” Alex said. “We could find one that they don't usually go to. Or we could maybe take them somewhere with animals.”
“Do you want to see animals?” Jamie asked the twins. “Some hippos and lions and monkeys?” She made a monkey noise, waving her arms around to get their attention.
Benton paused with a fist full of toast halfway to his mouth and looked at her like he wasn't sure that she was completely sane. Lilli clapped her hands.
“Well, we know what they think about monkeys now,” Alex said, laughing. “You should do the lion roar next.”
“And scare them half to death? I don't think so.” She pointed a finger at him. “And don’t you do it, either, or I’ll be angry with you no matter how nice this morning was.”
“Fine,” he relented. “No lion roars just yet.”
When they were done eating, Alex collected the plates while Jamie cleaned up the twins. She had to admit that she was kind of looking forward to a time when they were able to eat with silverware, but somehow she didn't think that was actually going to cut down the number of times she had to wipe their faces and hands each day.
“So,” she said, “are we headed to the zoo?”
“I don't see why not,” Alex answered, looking up from the dishes he was putting into the dishwasher. “It's a good place to spend a nice weekend day. Although it might be a bit crowded this time of year.”
“If it's terrible we can always find somewhere else to go,” Jamie said. She hoisted Benton out of his high- chair, and then Lilli, and put them down on the floor. “I'll go get them dressed. Or you can. But whoever isn't needs to pack a bag and make sure we have diapers and sunscreen.”
“I'll pack it.” Alex came around the edge of the counter and kissed her, just a brief brush of lips, and then they headed down the hall to the twins' room to get them ready.
Nearly an hour later, they were in the park and laughing as the kids squealed. Benton, it turned out, was much more interested in monkeys than he had been in Jamie pretending to be a monkey. He watched them with wide eyes as they moved around, swinging from ropes and branches, and sometimes he squealed with shocked delight. Jamie shifted a little closer to Alex, who had Lilli up on his shoulders, holding her carefully by her legs so that she wouldn't fall off. She could already guess that Lilli was going to be spending a lot of time up on her daddy's shoulders, watching the world from that lofty perch. Jamie lifted Benton up a little higher in her arms.
It wasn't as busy as they'd worried it would be, at least. Maybe everyone else had decided to go the park or the beach in the nice weather.
“Where should we go next?” Jamie asked, looking over at Alex.
“They haven't seen the penguins yet. How about those?”
That sounded good to her, and Jamie fell into step with Alex as they left the monkeys behind, despite Benton's protests. “I know,” she told him as he reached back. “But there are other good animals, I promise. We'll see the monkeys again later, okay?”
Benton didn't seem convinced, but he didn't cry, so Jamie counted it a win.
The penguins made him forget all about the monkeys.
By the time they made it back around to the front of the zoo, the morning had turned to afternoon, and the twins were starting to get a little cranky despite their obvious fascination with the animals. Jamie was feeling a little tired with all the walking herself, and was grateful to sink into the passenger seat of the car as Alex came around the front to slide in on the driver's side.
“I'm really glad you have weekends to spend with us now,” she said as he turned the key in the ignition and started the car. “It's so nice to have you home and be able to go places with the twins.”
Alex reached out and slid his hand into hers on the middle console. “It's nice to be home,” he said. “I actually... Well, I was worried that spending so much time away from work when I was so used to throwing everything into it would be hard to do, or that I would maybe miss it. But I don't. At all.” He turned to look at her, just for an instant before his eyes flicked back to the road. “I'm just enjoying my time with you and the peanuts.”
Jamie had worried, too, that he would feel restless or bored at home. That he would decide he should go back to spending more time at work anyway. Hearing those words was a relief. Her fingers squeezed his gently. “Good,” she whispered.
In the back, the twins were already asleep, exhausted by their long morning and soothed by the quiet purr of the car's engine. Jamie glanced over her shoulder at them and felt her heart clench in her chest. There was nothing in the world that she loved as much as she loved the three people in the car with her. Nowhere she would rather be than right there with them. Carefully, she reached back and brushed a stray lock of hair from Lilli's face.
