Chapter 1 (PEPPA)

My body crumbles to the floor as my heart bursts apart and the words, "Noah's dead," pass through my lips. I sit there in disbelief with my hands covering my face trying to stop the scream that's threatening to release itself. A hand touches my arm and I peek through my fingers to see the nurse bending down in front of me. Her voice penetrates my mind with the words, “Has no one told you? He’s not dead honey, he was taken to a private hospital.”

Through the tears that had spilled I take my hands away from my face and peer at her, “So he’s alive?" She nods her head yes.

The words come rushing from my mouth, “But I don't understand, why did they move him?"

She sighs, "That’s the part I don't understand either, my shift started this morning so I wasn't here. It is written on his notes that he had been moved late last night and was taken to a private hospital."

A frown appears on my face and I wipe the tears away, “Did his parents move him? Do you know the name of the hospital?”

She stands up and looks down at me, offering me her hand and I take it. As she pulls me up she says, “I’m sorry honey, I don't know the answers to those questions."

I open my mouth to speak but I hear the door opening and I turn to see Lara, who stares at the empty bed and then at me with confusion on her face. “Where’s Noah?"

My heart stops dead in my chest and with uncertainty I ask her, "That's what I would like to know. Did your mother and father have him moved to another hospital?"

She turns to glance at the door and then back at me shaking her head, "No, they are here now to visit and would have told me if they had moved him."

All heads turn as the door opens and in walks Noah's parents, looking as dumbfounded as Lara and myself.

Noah's father speaks before I can say anything, "I don't understand, we have just been told that Noah was moved last night. Why would you have him moved Peppa? He should have never been relocated in his condition."

My hand goes to my heart as I ponder,
why he is blaming me
. I give him a puzzled look and it takes me a minute before I can even answer him. “I assure you Mr. Blaise that I did no such thing. I’m just as bewildered as you all are about this."

There is a stillness that goes through the room as no one knows what to say or do. The silence is broken when a sob escapes from Noah's mother. She rummages in her bag, brings out a hanky and dabs her eyes and then her nose. She composes herself and looks right at me, “Peppa are you saying you had nothing to do with whatever has happened to Noah?"

The anger rises in me and I raise my voice, “Of course not! Why are you pointing the finger at me? I love Noah...”

I don't get to finish my sentence as I hear Mr. Blaise's disgruntled huff before he attacks me with his next words. "You love Noah? Don't make me laugh! With the way you have been letting that other man behave around you, what’s his name John...no Juan right? It wouldn't surprise me if you are both in on it. Get Noah out of the way so you can be together."

He stops talking as he struggles to breathe because his anger has taken over. Mrs. Blaise puts her hand on his arm and whispers something to him. He gazes back over at me with contempt written all over his face, which cuts deep and leaves me tongue-tied.

My head starts screaming at me to defend myself to say something, but what can I say? "I'm sorry Mr. and Mrs. Blaise but your son and I are both involved with Juan, as we are a threesome." I didn't think they would appreciate that. But what happens next surprises me even more as Lara takes her place by my side and addresses her father, "I'm sorry daddy but you have no right to talk to Peppa like that. She loves Noah and he loves her and it's none of your business what happens between her and Juan...”

Once again Mr. Blaise interrupts, “Not my business, if she…" He waves his arm over in my direction. “If she is having relations with this Juan, then it is my god damn business. She is making a mockery out of my son. And how do we know she has nothing to do with his disappearance?"

I fist my hands together to try and stop myself from throwing a punch at the old man spouting hurtful words about me. I open my mouth to speak but what I was about to say comes out of Lara's mouth instead, "Daddy, Noah knows about Juan. He's fine with it. They all love each other."

I notice Mrs. Blaise’s hand go to her heart as the shock of what Lara has just said shows on her face. She peers up at her husband, whose face is the colour of beetroot. Before Mr. Blaise explodes with his objections, through my anger I finally find my voice, "I'm sorry, but my personal life is just that, personal, and I'm not going to stand here and listen to you bad mouth me or my choices. You will have to talk to Noah and let him explain. We need to focus on what the hell happened to Noah and who took him."

Lara's hand rests on mine and she gives it a squeeze. Mrs. Blaise starts sobbing again and turns back to her husband and says, “She’s right Donald. Our first priority is Noah."

Again he looks over at me. Disgust is all I see and my body shivers with distaste at it all. His eyes focus on Lara and I feel her body quiver at his glare. "Lara, are you coming with your mother and I to find out what has happened to your brother?"

I look to Lara and find her staring back at me. I can see the unhappiness in her eyes and I pat her arm, "It’s ok, go with your parents, they need you."

She shakes her head, "But what about you? You don't have anyone."

I smile at her weakly and go on to say, “Don’t worry, I will phone Juan." But I know he couldn't get here until nightfall.

I hear the door bang and I watch as Mr. Blaise makes his escape muttering something about stupid women. Mrs. Blaise walks up to Lara and takes her hand and starts to lead her out of the door. As they walk away Lara spins back around to glance at me, “Are you coming? You are Noah's girlfriend you should be there too."

I lower my head as sadness washes over me as I know I won't be welcome. I peer back up at her and hold back the tears, “I don't think that is such a good idea right now. Will it be possible for you to come and find me and let me know what happens? I can wait in the relative’s room."

Her mother pulls on her hand and they start walking again, so she quickly says, “I can do that. I will come and find you and let you know what we find out."

I say thank you but she didn't hear me, her mother has already dragged her out of the room. The numbness starts to settle in and as the first tear escapes from my eye, a hand touches my arm. This causes me jump as I thought I was alone. My eyes find those of the nurse who first told me about Noah. I thought she had left but there she stood offering me comfort. "Let me walk you to the relative’s room and get you a cup of tea, after that little scene I wish I could offer you something stronger." A little laugh bursts through my lips and my hand instantly goes to my mouth to stop it. The nurse starts walking towards the doors and I hastily follow her.

After she makes sure I am settled with a nice cup of tea, she leaves me to get on with her work. I sit there clock watching, hoping the hands will speed up as time is passing slowly. I send a quick text to Monica letting her know what has happened but she didn't send one back. I dial Juan's number a few times but then disconnect before it goes through as I have no idea if I will still be here by the time he awakes.

I start to fidget. My knees are bouncing up and down. That’s when I decide to stand and start pacing the room. Then the doors swing open and Monica rushes over to me and nearly knocks me off my feet with the hug she gives me. "I'm sorry Peppa I had to wait for my sister to get home. I'm here now, so let's sit down and you can tell me everything."

She takes me by the hand and leads me to a chair. After explaining to Monica about Noah being missing and all that goes with that, I leave her speechless. I sit and wait for her to say something and finally, after glaring at her for over two minutes she says, “Wow Peppa your life could be a soap opera.” I wasn’t expecting that reply but she’s not wrong and I tell her that.

She stands and paces the room, then she suddenly stops and I stare up at her, “I’m sorry that this is happening to you Peppa but Lara is right, you should be with them finding out if the hospital knows anything. Mr. Blaise had no right talking to you like that.”

I know what Monica is saying to be true but I don’t want another confrontation, I just want to know where Noah is.

“I love you Monica, I don’t know what I would do without you. Mr. Blaise was rude to me and I don’t think I can take another tongue lashing. Lara will come and find me when she knows something.”

She stares at me angrily. “Sod Mr. Blaise.” She grabs my hand and pulls me out of the seat. “We are going to find Lara ourselves and get the answers you need.” And she starts to tug me towards the door.

When we reach the door and Monica opens it, a collision happens as Lara walks straight into us. The word sorry is said by us all. I take a look at Lara and I see the worry etched on her face and ask, “Is there any news? Did your father find out where Noah is?”

Her expression turns to sadness and she shakes her head, “No, the hospital seems as perplexed as we all are, so daddy has called the police.” I stumble back but manage to stay upright as Monica holds onto my hand trying not to let me fall. I notice a tear roll down Lara’s face and she wipes it away with her hand and goes onto say, “I’m sorry Peppa and please know I don’t feel the same way as my father does, but he has asked me to tell you to leave and that he will deal with this.”

The sharp pain I feel hitting my heart nearly brings me to my knees and all these questions run through my mind.
Why is he doing this? What did I do? Can’t he see I love Noah? I only want to know that Noah is safe!
