Dear Reader,
This was all about dealing with the past — both for Sunny and Sven. I hate when characters go through something traumatic and just bounce back. There are repercussions, echoes that run like fault lines through a person’s life. Even an eternal optimist like Sunny needs help coping with horrific events like Clyde’s attack.
Kudos to Diana Galbadon who writes so beautifully about Jamie Fraser’s struggle to deal with the memories of Black Jack Randall in her
Outlander
series. I started reading them after writing this book and it just reinforced for me the importance of the past forming a character’s present.
As always, a death is a catalyst for the plot and in this case it was Sir Henry. He was one of my favourite characters and I will miss him dearly. So will Sven.
I am also happy to be able to give Mimi a proper send off. You may remember in Back to St. Barts, her funeral was going to take place in Quebec where she was born. That didn’t give Sunny or Judith or Linus a chance to say goodbye. Keep reading as Sven’s past threatens his future.
