Chapter 11
At 5:30 the quiet was disrupted by chorale music coming from one of the alarm clocks. “Who has the Hallelujah Chorus for their alarm?” Journey asked.
“Oh, that's mine,” said Geena.
“Well, how come it is right under my pillow?” Journey moaned. “Come on, guys, a joke is a joke. What I did was nothing compared to this.”
“We thought you'd like it,” said Emma.
Journey turned off Geena's alarm. “Will you guys just get the other alarm clocks turned off so we can go back to sleep, please!”
“We must let the joke play out to fruition,” I answered. “No use letting a good practical joke go to waste.”
At 5:45 there was a loud buzz. “Whose is it now?” screamed Geena.
“Oh, that's mine,” said Julie. “I think it's coming from the garbage can.”
“Please turn it off so we can get some sleep,” I said.
Julie fumbled through the trash for her alarm and quickly turned it off.
“Okay, let's go back to sleep. We still have Josie's and Emma's alarms to go,” said Julie.
Fortunately for everyone, Emma and I didn't bother to set our own alarm clocks. So, we all woke up at 7:50. We had overslept. We would have to hurry and get dressed, skip breakfast and go straight to class.
We grabbed our gowns, put them on, brushed our hair and ran out the door.
We arrived in the big auditorium just in time to go to our places in the choir loft.
Angel Crystal floated to the front of the choir. “This morning we are going to practice our numbers for the graduation ceremony. The fourth week students will be graduating at the end of the week. The songs we will be singing are: “God Be With You Till We Meet Again,” “Oh That I were an Angel,” and “Lead Kindly Light.”
We practiced singing for an hour. Then Angel Angelique told us that we would be watching another movie showing how a little girl's life was saved by her guardian angel. This will be one of your futures again. This one is one of Kevin's future assignments.
Kevin grinned and watched eagerly.
The lights went out and a young girl, about 8 years old came into the vision. She was jumping rope in her back yard. She had blond braids and a toothless grin. A young man about 25 years old and two boys came out to the back yard.
“Hey, Kerry, do you want to go with us to get a hamburger?” Uncle John asked.
“Yeah, we're going to get a burger and fries at the new fast food place down the street.” said her brother Mark.
Normally Kerry would be thrilled to go somewhere with Uncle John. Her family rarely went out to eat. But instead of saying yes, she said, “No thanks. I just want to stay here and play.”
“You're sure?” Uncle John asked.
“Yes, maybe next time,” said Kerry. She continued to jump rope. The two boys, Mark and Steve, got in the car with Uncle John. Mark got in the front seat and Steve got in the back. Off they went. But before they could reach the hamburger joint, a car darted out in front of theirs. Uncle John put on the brakes, but it was too late. They were hit.
The vision then unfolded with Uncle John's bloody head against the steering wheel, unconscious. Mark was staring at Uncle John, trembling. Steve, in the back seat, hit his head on the floor and was unconscious. The other back side of the car was smashed in, the side of the car that Kerry would have been sitting in had she come.
The lights went on and the vision ended.
“Any thoughts on where the guardian angel fits into this scenario?” Angel Angelique asked.
Felix answered, “It doesn't look good for the people in the car.” He frowned and paused, thinking of his own car accident. “Maybe the little girl's life was saved.”
'Let's see.”
The lights went back off and the vision started again at the beginning. This time a guardian angel could be seen floating next to Kerry. The angel whispered something in her ear and then waved his baton. The thought was entered into Kerry's mind and that is when Kerry said no.
The lights were turned back on. “So you see,” said Angel Angelique. “This is a very good example of Thought instillation. This guardian angel knew what was going to happen in the future and knew that he needed to do something quick to prevent it. How do you think guardian angels are able to see the future?”
Felix raised his hand. “Do they have a crystal ball?” he asked.
Everyone laughed.
“No,” chuckled Angelique. “There are no crystal balls involved.”
A student raised his hand. “Yes, Christopher.”
“Are guardian angels capable of seeing the past, present and future?”
“No, we are not as powerful as God. We cannot see all.”
Another student raised her hand.
“Yes, Lacey.”
“Are guardian angels gifted to see the past, present and future of their assignments?”
“Sometimes, if God gives them that knowledge, on their own they are not capable of seeing that. Only God can see the past, present and future. He, in turn, sends a message to the guardian angel before something is about to happen and lets then know about it. The guardian angel receives the message and goes and does what he or she feels will be best in the situation. It is our responsibility to watch over our assignments and when we receive messages about their future, we must do what we can to help them. Sometimes we can see what is happening and do something about it right as it is occurring, as in the case of Budd and his broken parachute, but other times, it helps to know what can happen in the future and do something earlier to prevent it, as in Kerry's case. You are now excused to go to your first-hour class.”
Chapter 12
We floated to our next class. Walter floated to the front of the room.
“Today we will watch a few movies showing two different cases. The first one will be Case A.
The lights went out and the movie began. The scene opened with a young couple approaching a parked vehicle. The young man, Steven, opened the car door for his sweetheart. She got in and he shut the door and hopped over to his side of the vehicle. He got in and turned on the engine. As he put his foot on the accelerator, the engine cut out and stalled. At that very moment a big truck whizzed by. Had the engine not cut out, the young couple would have crashed right into the truck.
The lights came back on. All right, now let's look at Case B.
A young woman named Adeline, 17-years-old, was driving down a highway at 55 miles per hour. She was driving home from working at a fast food restaurant. All of a sudden a large poodle pranced onto the street right in front of her. Terrified, she ran over the dog. Her heart was pounding as she slowed down and turned into her housing subdivision.
The lights came on again and Professor Walter said, “Which case do you think the guardian angel used Mind instillation and which case did the angel use Controlling the Elements?
A freshman raised his hand. “Yes, Mark” said Angel Walter.
“I think the angel used mind instillation in the first case to get the driver to turn off the engine instead of going ahead.”
“No, that's not it,” said Angel Walter. “Any other guesses?”
I raised my hand. “Yes, Josie,” said Angel Walter.
“I think that the angel used controlling the elements to cut the engine in the first example.”
“Very good,” said Angel Walter. “Now who wants to tell us what happened in the second example?”
Kevin raised his hand.
“Yes, Kevin,” said Angel Walter.
“In the second example, the guardian angel used mind instillation to get the driver to run over the dog rather than swerve into the other lane, which would've caused a serious accident.”
“Very good,” said Angel Walter. “Now we will watch the scenarios with the guardian angels shown.”
The scenarios played out with the guardian angels shown. The first angel used controlling the elements, and the second used mind instillation.
We walked toward the practice rooms where we were to meet for second hour, Controlling the Elements. Angel Addison was there waiting for us when we entered the building.
“Please choose a partner and stand near one of the practice rooms,” she said. “Today I am going to have one of you go inside the room and the other one will get a slip of paper with a scenario written on it. This scenario will state what is happening to your partner in the practice room. In this virtual reality, I will place your partner in danger. You are to come up with a solution to the problem, and save your partner's life. Then you are to switch places. I will be recording each one as there is a camera in each room. Do your best.”
I looked at Journey nervously. “Who wants to go in there first?”
“Uh...” she said.
“I will,” I stated. “Please don't fail me,” I teased.
“What happens if I do?” she asked.
“I'm not sure, but I'm sure I can't die again,” I chuckled.
“Oh, that's right. We're already dead,” Journey uttered.
I went inside the room and shut the soundproof door. I couldn't see out the windows, so I just stood there waiting. While I waited, Journey received her assignment from Professor Addison and began reading and pondering the scenario. She could see me standing there patiently, but I couldn't see her. Journey thoughtfully pulled her baton out of the pocket of her robe.
Magically and wistfully the room turned into a beautiful forest. A gallant horse pranced up to me, begging for me to get on and take a ride. I did so, riding horses was, after all, second nature to me. The horse was quick and agile as it galloped through the beautiful green woods. Dodging trees, the horse seemed to know the way. We came to a clearing where the horse paused, then trotted through the meadow toward the side of a mountain. The mountain's trail led upward and we followed it, trotting along the edge. The trail was rugged and jutted in and out. I was afraid my horse would lose her footing along the narrow trail I'd ridden on many trails before, but this one was, by far, the slimmest.
My horse kept going faster and faster, even though I pulled the reigns and said Whoa there. But the horse seemed to have a mind of her own. She kept speeding up as if on a mission. My worries were warranted when my horse slipped on a rock and we began to fall over the edge. Great, I'm going to die or even worse, get hurt. But I couldn't die and I couldn't even get hurt, so why was I thinking that? Silly me.
In no time at all, our fall was cushioned by the branches and leaves of a tree. We were able to safely slide to the lower trail and make our way back down. I knew that Journey had intervened. It was too hard to believe that things accidentally happened for our benefit. Good job Journey, I thought. Now it's my turn to save your life.
I came out of the practice room. Journey smiled. “I see you are still alive,” she chortled.
“Yes,” I responded. “You did a great job. Now it's your turn to go inside and see how I do.”
Journey went inside. Angel Addison floated towards me with my assignment. I began reading. I glanced up at Journey standing inside the room waiting for something to happen. Once again, the room magically changed. Journey and another young lady were walking up the stairs of a large apartment building. They were knocking on doors and talking to people as community or church volunteers. I watched them as they walked down the hall knocking on each door. I looked at my slip of paper again. It said, “Apartment 88 has a dangerous man in it and will try to get the girls inside.” I didn't know what to do to save her from a dangerous man. I thought for a moment then decided I'd use mind instillation to get the girls to avoid going in there. I watched as the girls continued knocking on doors and talking to those who would listen. I watched as the girls began to knock on apartment 88 as they casually smiled and talked with each other. I prepared my baton and closed my eyes tight, concentrating. I instilled the word leave into Journey's mind, then the other girl's mind. LEAVE. Journey began talking, her usual spiel, when she was overpowered with the thought to leave and paused her speech. The man at the door said, “Come in, I have something to show you,” he started walking inside, thinking the girls would follow. Instead of following, however, the girls ran. They ran down the seven flights of stairs with the man soon following after them. They continued running down the street until they finally dared to look back and breathe and see that he was no longer there.
Journey was huffing and puffing when she came out of the practice room. “What was that about?” she asked.
“I think that man was a deranged killer,” I said. “I used Mind instillation to get you to run away. How did you save my life?”
“I got the tree branches to move to where you were falling I used Controlling the Elements.”
“I think we did a pretty good job, for our first week,” I said. “I wonder how Kevin and Felix did.”
“We'll have to ask them at lunch,” said Journey. The bell chimed and we were excused to our next class.
