“Fine,” Kendra said. “Excuse me while I text my boyfriend. I really need a fuck right now, and he’s pretty good for that, at least.”

“Kendra!” Levi said. “What the hell do you think you’re playing at? You agreed to follow my rules, and I’m pretty sure I emphasized that one very strongly.”

But she had disappeared into her room. Levi put down the spoon he was mixing with, grunting in exasperation, and followed her. When he reached her room, Kendra was busily dividing her attention between texting and glancing defiantly at Levi.

With two strides Levi reached her side and grabbed the cell phone out of her hand.

“What do you think you’re doing?” Kendra yelled. “Give that back!”

“Kendra,” Levi said, as calmly as he could, “this is your last chance to apologize for what you just did before I spank you.”

“What?”

“You heard me.”

“Fine! Spank me! If you won’t fuck me, at least maybe you’ll give me that much action!” Levi looked into her defiant blue eyes. Did he see pleading there, or was he only imagining it? Whether the pleading was visible on her face or not, however, didn’t matter at all. Levi could not have been more certain that Kendra’s behavior cried out for boundaries. Well, Levi had told her what the boundary was going to be, and the worst thing he could do now would be not to enforce it. He sat on the bed.

“Get over my lap, Kendra,” he said quietly.

“No!” she said.

“Get over my lap, or I’m going to put you there.”

“No! No way,
Doctor
Hunter!”

Levi started to get up. Kendra stood there, apparently more than half sure that Levi would back down. She had a lot to learn, in so many ways, Levi thought, as he reached out to take hold of her around the waist. At the last second, Kendra seemed to understand that Levi did not exaggerate or make idle threats. She started to turn to run toward the door, but by that time Levi had her firmly within his left arm’s grasp, and was hauling her across his lap, with her face to the bed and her feet on the floor.

Levi grabbed the waistband of the cutoff sweats.

“Oh, no!” Kendra said angrily. “You didn’t say anything about that!”

“At this moment, young lady, I don’t care what I said anything about.” He pulled the sweats down to Kendra’s knees, revealing her really very sexy gray panties with the white waistband. Into that waistband he tucked his fingers.

“What? No… please… not with my panties down!”

“Absolutely with your panties down, Kendra. It’s not like you didn’t want to show me everything a few moments ago anyway, is it?”

At that Kendra gave a humiliated sob, and Levi pulled the panties down atop the sweats.

Trying desperately to find his clinical persona, he looked at Kendra’s taut, lovely bottom cheeks. He found it much more difficult to do with a beautiful girl squirming over his lap—a beautiful girl whom, truly, he wanted very much to take up on her offer of her charms, and make love to wildly and at very great length. He felt himself breathing hard, but just when he thought desire would overcome him, Kendra said defiantly, “Just get it over with, please.” The “please” might as well have been spit out of her mouth for all the politeness in it.

Instead of honoring Kendra’s wishes, Levi held her in position. After a few seconds, she began to squirm. When that happened, Levi smacked her right cheek, hard, then her left cheek just as hard.

“Ow!” Kendra said, squirming even more, so that Levi had to hold her even tighter around her waist. He waited again, wanting to make sure she realized he would make it last as long as he wanted it to. Kendra, seeming to realize what he meant to do, struggled in earnest, trying to get off his lap, but Levi held her tight, and gave her two more spanks that made her yelp again.

“This,” he said, spanking her hard in the middle of her bottom, “is going to last as long as I think it should. I don’t care how embarrassing it is for you, Kendra.”

Then he spanked her five times in quick succession, each blow harder as he learned, quickly, how to spank Kendra Jackson to set the boundary she needed.

“Ow! Fuck!” Kendra yelled. “Not so hard! Jesus!”

“Kendra, if you think you get to determine how hard I’m going to spank you, you don’t understand my purpose here.” He gave her another very hard spank, right on her sit spot.

“Why am I spanking you, Kendra?” he asked, and spanked her again.

“Ow! I sure as fuck don’t know!”

He spanked her three more times, even harder. “Let’s stop that language, please.”

She yelped, then said, “Fuck you—this is the way I talk!”

He sighed heavily. “Alright, for a start, I’m going to spank you until you tell me that you’ll use cleaner language. That filthy tongue is just not acceptable.”

He began to spank her steadily, as she wailed and began to squirm again, so that he had again to wrap his left arm around her little waist to keep her bottom still. Her bottom was so trim, and his hands so big, that really he could only spank in one spot, and under his chastising hand her backside began to glow a fiery red.

“Ah! Oh, please… oh… I’m sorry… Levi, I’m sorry.”

Levi stopped spanking. “What are you sorry about, Kendra?”

“I’m sorry I used bad language. I’m sorry I broke the rule.”

Levi thought he heard the beginnings of true contrition in her voice. He said, “Why am I spanking you?”

“Because I broke the rule.”

“Why did I make that rule for you?” He continued to hold her firmly.

“I don’t know. So I couldn’t have sex?”

It was the return of the defiant tone that made it clear that her punishment couldn’t yet come to an end, even more than the words themselves. Levi spanked her three times, hard, and Kendra howled.

“Why is communicating with your boyfriend against the rules?” Levi said sternly.

“Ow! I… I…” Levi could tell that Kendra hovered between defiance and acceptance, and he spanked her again. “Ow! Because he’s bad for me.” Her final words were delivered miserably and yieldingly.

He couldn’t resist, and brought his hand down on her little bottom and rubbed from the top of one cheek and then smoothly down to where her thigh met the rosy hue of her bottom, then did the same to her other cheek, just a bit, to console her. Kendra gave a tiny whimper, and the feeling of her warm cheeks under his hand, together with the sound, seemed to go straight to his loins. Hastily, he removed his hand. A different means of consolation would certainly be required.

“Alright,” Levi said. “Stand up and pull up your panties and your shorts.”

That too was a mistake, though perhaps a less serious one. Without any thought for her modesty, Kendra stood up, and though he tried mightily to avoid it, Levi’s eyes darted down to the tiny bit of her pussy that could be seen beneath the T-shirt, and swallowed at how hard he felt his cock grow. He wished he could tell Kendra how very much he wanted her.

He turned his eyes to her face, wreathed in her disheveled brown hair, tearful, open, and sorrowful, and noticed with a guilty pang that she had seen where his eyes had gone. Her eyes widened with surprise.

Levi opened his arms, and Kendra came into them. He held her tightly for a few moments. She tried to end the hug more than once, but he refused to let her, and that seemed to make her snuggle her face even closer into his chest, as if she was glad he wanted to keep her in his arms.

“Levi?” she asked, still crying a little bit.

“Yes?” Levi said.

“Do you really not want me?”

Levi closed his eyes and sighed, grateful that Kendra couldn’t see his expression or, because of their position with him sitting on the bed and her standing, feel how incredibly hard his cock was. “Oh, Kendra, that’s very complicated, and I don’t think we should try to think about it right now.”

“So…” she said in a tone that seemed to bewitch him and rob him of his senses with a single drawn-out word.

But Levi managed to say, “Right now, I want you to understand exactly why I spanked you. It was about the rule, but what’s the rule about?”

“My boyfriend,” Kendra said.

“Why did I make a rule about your boyfriend?”

“To protect me?”

“Yes. Why do I want to protect you?”

Kendra said, with a touch of defiance, “I have no idea. Are you done talking to me yet?”

“Kendra,” Levi said, putting the authority into his voice again. “I can put you right back over my knee if that’s what you need.”

Kendra seemed to hesitate. This was the hard part—this was the part they really needed to work on. Levi knew that Kendra truly had a hard time seeing why anyone would want to protect her.

“Okay, okay… So I can go back to school?”

“That’s a big part of it,” Levi said. “But it’s bigger. I’m going to protect you, because you matter—you matter to me, and you matter to all the people you’re going to help by finishing your education, whether you end up as a psychologist or as something else. I don’t think Chloe is a great friend, from what you’ve told me, but you matter to her. And I know it’s hard to hear, but you matter to your mom, too.” Levi stroked her hair as he spoke and found that his clinical persona had returned, but with a kind of twist in that he felt real affection for Kendra, this girl with limitless potential hidden under an unwillingness to see herself as a person with value.

“Thank you,” Kendra said. She stayed in his arms, quietly, letting him hold her close. “I understand. It’s just… it’s hard.”

“I know,” Levi said.

“I mean, it was… I guess it was easier to think that I didn’t matter, that I don’t matter.”

“It absolutely is easier. Letting go of things that are too hard and too painful to hold on to—that’s easier. It means you’re not going to be happy, really, but also that you’re not going to be really sad.”

Kendra pushed herself back from him and looked into his face. “Yes. That’s exactly it. Why be sad about something that doesn’t matter?” She smiled. “You really are a psychologist, aren’t you?”

“That’s what it says on my diploma,” Levi said, laughing. “One of them, at least.”

Chapter Six

Kendra seemed to float through that day, after Levi had spanked her and held her. The insurance company wasn’t going to give her enough money to buy even a very old, crappy replacement truck, but who cared? The idea that she mattered seemed to recur to her every time she shifted her still sore backside on her seat.

She curled up on her side to relieve her still tender bottom and began one of the movies Levi had recommended. Bresson’s
Diary of a Country Priest
was incredibly depressing, but thinking about Levi, and psychology, she found herself crying at the beauty of it. When Levi got home, she had made a simple dinner of grilled chicken and salad, and the grateful look he gave her made Kendra feel again like she mattered.

They talked about Robert Bresson at dinner, and about the relative merits of that kind of film, as opposed to Hitchcock’s thrillers, as a way of making a psychological point.

Kendra said, “Don’t get me wrong, I loved it… but aren’t you the one who thinks people should be helping?”

Levi looked at her with a puzzled expression. “Yes, but I don’t see what that has to do with Hitchcock and Bresson.”

“Well, if we’re talking about how much people might be able to understand themselves and others, didn’t Hitchcock help more?”

Levi thought for a long moment, then said, “That’s a really good point. I’ve never thought of it that way.”

Kendra felt like she had just started to glow like a firefly.

When Levi asked her about the truck, the fact that he was there with her and had promised to help, made it so much easier to admit how badly totaling her truck had messed things up.

“They’re only giving me a few hundred dollars.” Kendra admitted.

“Ah, that sucks,” Levi said. “I’ll loan you enough to get something safe.”

That was that. Kendra returned to floating, and when she got to work she even felt up to chatting with some of her regular customers, asking them about their days and offering cheery advice about seizing the moment and taking quality time with their families.

“What’s gotten into you?” Chloe asked. “Did you get that doctor of yours to fuck you?”

“No!” Kendra said. “You wouldn’t understand.”

But Chloe was in a particularly foul mood, it appeared—so foul she didn’t seem even to want to improve it by teasing Kendra.

“What’s wrong?” Kendra asked after the fifth time Chloe had slammed her tray down on the bar.

“Fucking Jeff is acting weird. I think he’s going to break up with me.”

“Oh, Chloe,” Kendra said. “That sucks. I mean, you know how I feel about him… but… if it’s any consolation, I think you can do a lot better.”

Chloe’s hard expression dissolved into grief. “I wish I believed that,” she said. “But thanks.”

Chloe turned and went back to waiting on tables, and they didn’t speak again that night. When Levi drove her home later on, her thoughts were on Chloe and if there was some way to get her into therapy. She fought hard against the urge to have another try at seducing Levi, who carried on amiable small-talk about her job the whole ride back, but in the end was grateful simply to give in to her exhaustion and not ruin the wonderful day. She brushed her teeth and went to bed, after giving Levi a shy hug goodnight.

* * *

The next morning, Kendra woke to a text message from Chloe.

Jeff walked out. Bring vodka.

She called. Chloe was sobbing. “Thanks so much for being there for me, Kendra. When can you get here and start getting wasted with me?”

Kendra whispered into the phone, “I can probably get there around ten, but I can’t get wasted with you.”

“What? Why the fuck not?”

“I’m not supposed to. Do you want me to… do you want me to get kicked out of the only place I’ve got?” Kendra blushed as she realized she had almost said, “Do you want me to get a spanking?”

“You’re not
supposed
to,” Chloe mocked. “What the fuck, Kendra? Am I important to you, or not? Friends get wasted together. I don’t care what your
doctor
says.”
