Finally he stopped and held his arm out to her. “Our wedding chamber, my love. Just for you.”

Gwyneth gasped as she took in everything in front of her. A dense cluster of trees concealed a small clearing, just large enough for the size of a large bed. Fronds and pine boughs had been interwoven in the tree branches above to create a canopy over the clearing, and the ground was covered with bedrolls, furs, plump pillows, and several plaids. Several baskets of food sat on either side of the clearing, hanging from the tree limbs.

“Logan, I love it.”

He tugged her through the trees at the side to find a small creek that wound behind the area, hidden by some large rocks. “The water is a bit cold, but ‘tis private.”

She threw her arms around his neck and kissed him soundly.

He growled and pulled back. “Time for us to get you out of that gown.”

Returning to their makeshift bed, he helped her with the ties in the back.

She said, “The only thing that would have made this perfect is if I had thought to pack my leggings for the morrow.”

Before she dropped her skirts to the ground, he reached down behind the pillows and picked up a wrapped package. The surprise on her face when he handed it to her was worth every minute of his effort.

She tore off the ties and folded the material back. Inside sat a dark green tunic and new leggings to match. “Logan, many thanks.” She ran her hands over the soft cloth before clutching them to her chest. “You have indeed thought of everything.”

She dropped her gift onto the furs and cupped his face in her hands. “I do love you so. This place is the best gift you could have ever given me.” She kissed him, teasing him with her tongue, before pulling back to ask, “How did you know?”

He shrugged his shoulders. “Because I love you. Now, about that gown…”

Epilogue

Gwyneth had to admit she had never been so happy in her life. She glanced at Logan’s beaming face as he jested with his brothers, all of them sitting in chairs around the hearth in the great hall. How she loved him. They had taken a large amount of ribbing over their disappearance on the night of the wedding, but all was forgiven.

Rab had almost cried when they returned hand in hand, but he’d managed to hold everything together. She was so pleased he would be staying on as the priest. Rather than losing the one remaining member of her family to join this new family, she would have everyone she loved with her.

Quade and Micheil and Logan were so close, which was another reason it felt right to settle here. The brothers would build a new cottage for Logan and Gwyneth, and they had chosen a spot in the forest. They would stay in the keep as winter came upon them, then move in the new year. Logan promised her they would sneak off to their hideaway once in a while, just to be alone, and because she loved the spot.

Lady Ramsay was a constant source of support and inspiration, and she’d offered to teach Gwyneth to cook so they wouldn’t have to come up to the keep for all their meals once they moved.

She only had one issue left to settle, and she couldn’t decide how to go about it. She needed to get in touch with her supervisor. But having pledged to keep her affiliation with the crown secret, she couldn’t tell her husband…and he was unlikely to understand if she disappeared to Glasgow for a day.

All of a sudden, Logan stood and held his hand out to her. “Come, wife, I have someone I want you to see.” Logan kissed her cheek and tugged her over to Quade’s solar.

She had no idea who she would find inside.

When she stepped through the door, a tall man stood facing the window, his back to them. As soon as they entered, he spun around and smiled at them. Logan strode over to greet him, his arm still around Gwyneth.

She gasped when she realized who it was. Dougal Hamilton settled his hands on his hips as he stared at the newly married couple. “Why, Gwyneth, I see marriage agrees with you. You are glowing, though the shocked expression on your face isn’t becoming. Logan kept our secret, I see.”

She turned to her husband and said, “You knew?”

Logan kissed her cheek. “Aye.”

“You didn’t tell me?”

“Och, I couldn’t, love. Dougal wouldn’t allow me.”

“Gwyneth.” Dougal came over and stood in front of her. “Don’t blame your husband. He was sworn to secrecy just as you were.”

“When? When did you find out?” she asked Logan.

Dougal spoke up. “It was all my doing. I was worried about you with Erskine, so I assigned him to follow you.”

Gwyneth took a step back, pushing away from her husband. He had only followed her because she had been his assignment? She glared at Logan as she tried to process the news that threatened to tear apart her world.

“Whoa, whoa, Gwyneth, nay. I know what you’re thinking. I followed you down from the Highlands on my own, and I was already in love with you when I met with Dougal.” He covered her hands with his, rubbing the back of them with his thumbs.

Gwyneth collapsed in a chair, unsure of what to believe. Finally she managed to look up and meet Dougal’s gaze. “Logan’s right,” he said. “He was already besotted when he came to me. I could see it in his eyes. In fact, the reason I assigned him to you was because I knew he cared. I wanted you to have someone there for you, so the situation with Duff Erskine would be wrapped up well.”

Gwyneth reviewed the sequence of events in her head. “When did you assign him to me?”

“Not until the day you returned from the Highlands. He had just left the Kirk to come see me,” Dougal answered.

“After I proposed marriage to you and you turned me down.” Logan still held her hands as he spoke.

“She turned you down?” Dougal asked, then turned to Gwyneth. “You turned him down?”

“Aye, I was confused at the time, and only focused on one thing.” She paused to consider the situation, and decided Logan had told the truth. He’d proposed as soon as they returned from the Highlands. “I accept your explanation. Then why are you here?”

“For one thing, to congratulate my two best spies on their marriage. I think your union will be a verra happy one.”

“And?” Gwyneth asked. “You aren’t taking him away from me, are you?”

“Nay. I will leave you alone for now. You need to get to know each other. But come spring, I hope you will both consider returning to work for me.”

“Doing what exactly, Hamilton? I don’t wish to be worried about my wife going off on her own somewhere.”

“Nay, of course not. I wouldn’t send her anywhere without you.”

Logan and Gwyneth turned to look at Dougal, then at each other.

“Together?” Logan asked. “You’ll let us work together?”

“Aye. Imagine how strong you two will be if I assign you to work together.”

“Truly?” Gwyneth asked, lighting up at the suggestion.

Logan grinned, wrapping his arm around her waist.

Dougal strode over to the door. “Time for me to move on.” He reached for the handle, but stopped and turned to them. “For now, you only have one assignment.”

“What’s that?” Logan asked.

“Make a bairn. I don’t care whether it’s a lad or a lassie.” He stared at the ceiling. “Imagine the abilities of a wean from the loins of you two.” He chuckled. “What an intriguing thought.”
