Rearing back, she touched his mouth with a fingertip. To hell with waiting. She knew he knew how to kiss. It was time she stopped being so frigging patient and showed him how to use his lips properly. Tugging on his neck, she started to bring his face down to hers, when he suddenly stopped.
"I brought you a gift."
"Huh?"
He dug into the side pocket of his uniform and pulled out an object to hold up to her. "I looked for one before I came to wait for you. You said you wanted one, so I found you the smell of standing up."
She took the bedraggled rose from him. Its leaves were wilting, and it had passed its bloom long ago. She sniffed it, and a bruised petal fell onto her wrist. It was beautiful.
"Thank you."
She heard the whistle again, and this time she recognized it for what it was, the ship's return signal.
"Merry?"
Throwing her arms around his neck, she drew his face toward hers and lightly, tenderly, placed her lips against his. She felt him tense slightly, then begin to relax as she kissed him again, and again, and again, each time caressing his mouth with hers.
"I love you, Neeveer. I love you. My

His arms enfolded her completely. "My
seela.
My One," he echoed, and this time he claimed possession of her mouth as he sealed her fate.
