It made me beam with pride to see the way he accepted her into our home even though she'd been less than friendly in the past. Mom didn't seem to know what to make of it, either. Before long we were all sitting around the table for dinner. Kevin had made lasagna and there was enough for a family of ten.

"Mom, this is Amber, Kevin's sister," I said, as the sullen teen came to the table. "She's going back home to Michigan in the morning."

"Well, nice to meet you," Mom said.

"Thanks," Amber muttered before plopping into a chair.

Kevin ignored her and poured three glasses of wine, which he passed around the table. Amber rolled her eyes as he slid a goblet of milk toward her. "I'd like to propose a toast," he said.

"A toast?" I giggled.

"Yes. To family. To two families becoming one, and to my amazing wife."

"Aw, that's so sweet. To family," I said.

"To family," my mom echoed. "Honey, you're supposed to raise your glass."

I smothered a giggle as a very perturbed Amber lifted her goblet and allowed us all to clink our glasses against it. "I love you," I told Kevin, leaning over to give him a kiss.

When his lips met mine, his kiss told me more than words could ever say.

Epilogue

Six months later…

"This is going to be so much fun!" Mrs. Sims told me as she gave me a hug. "I'm glad you and Kevin are doing this."

"It was all his idea," I said, beaming at her enthusiasm. "He's very good to me."

"He'd better be, or I'll have something to say about it!" She laughed, hugging me harder. "You look lovely."

I looked down at my white dress. It was a simple satin A-line gown, which hugged my hips and flared at the bottom. It was the perfect wedding dress, and I'd known the moment I'd laid eyes on it that it was 'the one', even before I'd tried it on. "Thank you," I said.

"She's right, you know."

A big smile lit up my face as I heard the familiar voice and turned to see my mother standing behind me. "You made it!"

"I wouldn't miss it, Sug," she said, throwing her arms around my neck.

"You look so pretty," I enthused, taking in her simple pink sundress. I didn't think I'd ever seen my mom in a dress before. I'd half expected her to show up in jeans; not that I would have minded.

"Well, now, thank you. But
you're
the star of the show today, darlin'."

"It's a little silly," I acknowledged, tugging on the pearl necklace I was wearing.

"I don't know about that. I'm glad to get to share this day with you, and I told Kevin as much when he called me," she said.

"He called you?" I asked, surprised. I was still getting used to my mom taking a more active role in my life—not that I was complaining.

"He wanted to get my take on it, is all. I told him I thought it was a great idea."

I hadn't been nearly as enthusiastic when Kevin had suggested throwing a big party for our first wedding anniversary. He wanted it to be a reception for all our family and friends who hadn't been able to be at our impromptu wedding, and he'd insisted on going all the way, buying me a wedding gown and hiring a florist and a caterer. I'd told him it was silly to spend so much money, especially now that he was opening his own restaurant, but he'd stayed firm, and in the end, I'd happily given in. The truth was, I was thrilled that he thought so much of me.

"Well, look who it is," Mom drawled, making me turn to see what she was looking at.

Amber was walking toward us—or, rather, being pulled along by Mr. Sims.

"Cara!" he boomed as he neared me. "There's my beautiful daughter-in-law! What a shindig, huh? You two sure know how to throw a party! I just wanted to say congratulations on your first year, sweetheart!" He picked me up in a big bear hug.

"Well, thank you!" I giggled.

"Now, I got you a little something," he said, handing me an envelope. "You make sure to spend some of that on yourself, you hear?"

"Yes, sir."

"Amber, don't you have something to say to Cara?" he demanded of his daughter.

"Congratulations," she said.

"Thank you, Amber."

"You look pretty today, Cara."

"So do you," I told her truthfully.

"Save a dance for me, sweetheart," Mr. Sims instructed before leading his daughter away.

"She's warming up to me," I informed my mother, who snorted with laughter. Amber had indeed apologized before she'd left six months earlier, followed by a handwritten letter of apology that came a few weeks after she'd arrived back home. Kevin had assured me that it had been due to their father's influence. He'd suggested that I write her back and tell her that I'd forgiven her, if I could—and I'd been only too happy to do so. I was too happy to hold a grudge.

"There you are, Cara."

I turned to see Kevin at my elbow and smiled at him. "Hey, handsome."

"Why hello there, gorgeous. We've got to go cut the cake. You don't mind if I steal her for a moment, do you, Mom?" he addressed my mother.

"'Course not, you two go on ahead."

I allowed myself to be pulled along by my husband, my heart so full, as we were cheered on by family and friends, that I thought it might bust.

"If you smash that cake in my face," Kevin warned in a low voice as we took our places, "there will be consequences."

I grinned impishly. "Who, me? That doesn't sound at all like something
I
would do."

"I'm warning you, young lady," he growled, even though his eyes were dancing at me. "You won't be sitting comfortably tomorrow."

"I don't know," I whispered back, as his hand covered mine and we cut the first slice, "I might have to take that chance."
