He thought that would bring her into his arms, but though she had begun to smile, she held her ground. “Why, Andrew?” she whispered up at him. “Why can’t I leave you?”
And oblivious to the crowd around them, he thundered it out: “Because! Because I love you!”
She came into his arms then, raising her face for his kiss. For a moment he was aware of Durabian and Aunt Sophie congratulating him, the little girls laughing in delight. And then he was aware of nothing but the woman in his arms, the woman he would always love—the woman who was whispering, “Oh Andrew, I love you.”
