et me get a few historical notes cleared up first. In the early years of the British Museum, anyone who wished to see the collections was required to apply for permission, and only those deemed worthy were extended the much-coveted tickets. Even then, they were hustled through the rooms with only a few minutes to take in the treasures. By the time the Townley Gallery was built in 1808, the rules were relaxing, and by the year of this story, 1810, those rules were no longer in place. Since I wanted my story specifically set in 1810, I fudged the time line a little. But why was I so set on having Charlotte’s story take place in 1810? Well, the fashions, of course! I gathered Charlotte’s, Finny’s, and even Sebastian’s wardrobe from the extensive fashion plate collection of fellow author Candice Hern, and you can see the exact gowns and clothes these characters wore in the book on her website, candicehern.com/collections/ elizabethboyle/mistress.htm.
Now on to very important matters. You might have no
ticed that there is another wish to be granted. Poor Milton! At this rate (and with so many Marlowes to choose from), he may never get his ring back. Make sure to visit my website, elizabethboyle.com, for all the latest news and hints as to who will be Quince’s next victim, I mean, er, beneficiary of her romantic encouragement.
Until then, best wishes and all my love,
Elizabeth Boyle
