"Vi, I can't go to this wedding with him. It's the last thing I should be doing!"

"It'll be fun," she says.

Tate frowns. "We have a party that weekend."

I smile, vindicated. "See? Can't go."

Vi waves off my concern. "I've already mentally cleared my schedule. I got it covered."

Tate high fives her across my body, and I scowl at them both. "You suck."

"Go meet his family. It'll help you learn more about him and whether he's right for you or not," she says seriously.

I guess if the point of this summer is to get to know each other, then this is an important step. Realizing how little of his life outside of me I know about him, I decide tomorrow I will also drop in on him at work.

I can imagine nothing sexier than him in his scrubs, saving the lives of children.

Chapter 21
Grey's Anatomy

I know most people don't like hospitals, but I actually find them reassuring. I like knowing there are entire structures set up to help those who are sick or injured, and that these buildings are filled with people who are devoting their lives to saving people. That's pretty awesome, when you think about it.

When I arrive at Sunrise Children's Hospital, I admire its attempt at modern-looking architecture. Big windows, sharp angles, cement and glass and metal. I park and make my way to the front desk where they direct me to pediatrics. He doesn't know I'm coming, which may be a mistake. I start to regret my impulsive decision to bring him lunch.

I exit the elevator on his floor and am about to get back on, having chickened out, when someone calls my name.

I turn and see Dr. Donovan looking oh-so-sexy in khakis, a buttoned down shirt and a white doctor coat with a stethoscope around his neck. He smiles when I turn, his eyes bright and glued to me as he takes long strides to reach me.

I wait, wondering what kind of greeting to expect while he's at work. He hugs me, then kisses me deeply as nurses gawk, and a few shoot me not-so-friendly glances. Guess he's popular.

"What are you doing here?" he asks.

I hold up the brown bag I'm carrying. "I brought you lunch." I shrug sheepishly and smile. "Surprise?"

"That's a wonderful surprise, and I actually have a few minutes. Let's go to my office."

Relief sinks into me as I follow him through the long white corridors. His office is neat and sparse, with the exception of the wall of medical books to the left of his desk.

I put the lunch on his desk, and he closes the door behind him.

"It's so good to see you," he says. "I was afraid I'd scared you off after inviting you to the wedding this month."

That's closer to the truth than he realizes, but I don't tell him that. I'm enjoying how happy he is to see me and don't want to ruin it. "I'm still here," I assure him, taking out the turkey sandwiches on rye I made, along with homemade pasta salad and a piece of pie for each of us.

Instead of sitting behind his desk, he takes the seat next to me, and we begin eating.

"How's your day going?" I ask.

He nods, wiping a bit of mustard off his lips. "Good. I have a patient, Shannon, she's six, and we've been worried about her for a while. We're waiting on a donor for her heart transplant, and she's been touch and go, but she's finally stabilizing and I'm confident she'll make it."

I take a sip of the soda I brought before speaking. "That's… so sad. I can't imagine what she and her parents must be going through. And to know that another child has to die to save her… "

"That's the hardest part of my job," he says.

"I couldn't do it. I couldn't have a job where life and death rested in my hands like that. It's amazing anyone can. You're a modern day hero," I tell him.

"I'm not the hero; those kids are."

My heart melts.

He picks up a napkin and brushes a crumb off my lip, then smiles. "How's your day going? Any new clients?"

"The schedule is looking good," I say, pleased that he's taking an interest in my work. "I'm still waiting to hear back about doing the party for Melton. That would make our career."

"I can't believe he called you. That's incredible. I'm so proud of you, either way."

"Technically, it was his assistant," I say. "But thanks. I'm pretty stoked. I have a good feeling about it."

We finish our sandwiches, and as I clear the trash off his desk, he comes up behind me and wraps his arms around my waist, pressing himself into me. "I'm really glad you came to surprise me today."

I twist in his arms to face him, my ass pressed against the edge of his desk. "I'm really glad I came too."

"I've missed the feel of you," he says, running his hand over my thigh as my skirt inches up higher.

"You're feeling me now," I remind him, my hands exploring his muscles.

"Not enough of you. I want to be inside of you. Do you want my cock inside of you, Kacie?" His hand slips between my legs, and he's rubbing my clit through my panties, so obviously my answer is a resounding yes.

With enthusiasm he pulls my panties down, and I kick them off. With my skirt now pushed to my waist, Sebastian unzips his own pants, spreads me and shoves his hard cock into me.

The sex is frantic, fast, intense as he frees my breasts and plays with them while pounding me. The carnal nature of this, in his office no less, makes me wet and desperate for more.

In this position, as my ass is pushed against the desk that I'm half sitting on, his pelvic bone rubs against my clit while he's fucking me, making my orgasm come quickly, deeply, shaking my whole body until I'm breathless. He holds me up, his arms around me, hands on my hips, as he keeps up the pace. His abs clench, muscles tensing as an orgasm rips through him.

He's moaning my name into my hair when the door behind us opens, and a woman speaks.

"Really, Sebastian? Is it bring-your-slut-to-work day?"

I'm too shocked to speak. As Sebastian pulls out of me and zips himself back up before turning to face what can only be his bitchy ex-fiancée, I find the presence of mind to close my legs, even if my panties are conspicuously on the floor in front of us.

When my brain finally starts working again, I wonder what the hell is she doing here?

Then I look at her closely. She's wearing a white jacket with a hospital ID. So she's a doctor.

Fuck me.

My stomach sinks to the floor, and I feel like I'm going to be sick. He still works with her? He sees her everyday? And he didn't mention this to me?

"You might try knocking," he growls at her. "This isn't your office."

"I didn't realize I'd be walking in on a sex show," she says, clearly not sorry.

"It's not your business. And you owe my
wife
an apology."

She looks aghast. I'm guessing she's done her best to put our nuptials out of her mind. "I refuse to apologize to your sex toy. You and I both know this is nothing but a drunken mistake that won't last. You deserve better than the likes of her."

I'm about to push myself past Sebastian and bitch-slap her, when he pulls me against him. "Get out, Celene."

She tosses a file on the desk next to where my naked ass just was. "That's the file you wanted on Shannon. You're welcome."

She storms out, and I'm still shaking.

Sebastian looks at me, his face in a frown. "I'm so sorry. She had no right to speak to you that way."

"Why didn't you tell me she works here with you?"

I pull out of his grasp and grab my underwear, slipping them on under my skirt.

"It's not important. She's not important. We're just colleagues. Nothing more."

I nod, but I'm hurt and not ready to deal with this right now. "I have to go, and you probably have work to do."

I'm at the door when he catches my hand. "I'm truly sorry. Please forgive me."

"There's nothing to forgive." I let him kiss me, then I leave.

I'm nearly out of the hospital, and I'm doing a damn good job holding in all the emotions flooding me, when the bitch sees me and walks briskly over to me. I can keep walking, but she'll probably use her demon powers to catch me.

Instead, I stop, waiting for her, mildly curious as to what she might have to say.

Her first words surprise me.

"I'm sorry. What I said was uncalled for. It's hard seeing him with someone else."

I almost feel sorry for her, until I remember why they're not together anymore. "I'm sure that's how he felt when you cheated on him."

She flinches. "You're right. It probably is. Look, I don't know you, and you're probably a really great person. Maybe we could even have been friends under different circumstances."

Yeah, no.

"But I wasn't entirely wrong in what I said. This," she gestures to the hospital around her, "is his life. He lives and breathes his vocation. His calling as a doctor. He needs someone who understands this part of him. Who lives it too. Can you give him that? Can you be who he really needs for the rest of his life?"

She doesn't wait for an answer, and I have none to give her as I walk to my car, a lonely hole growing inside of me. I open my car door, ready to sulk away, nursing my heartache in silent martyrdom, when Sebastian calls my name.

He's running toward me, briefcase in hand. "Wait, please!"

I stand by the door, surprised to see him. "Aren't you supposed to be working?" I ask.

"My work is done for the day. I left the reports until the morning. I couldn't let you leave alone after that." He reaches for my hand and holds it in his. "I'm sorry. I should have told you about working with Celene. You have every right to be hurt. Can you forgive me?"

Damn it. I can't stay mad at this man. "Yes, of course. I just really hate that bitch."

He laughs. "Yes, well... But let's not let her get in the way of us. Okay?"

I step closer to him. "Are you really taking the rest of the day off?"

He nods, slipping an arm around me. "If you'll spend it with me."

Chapter 22
Unexpected Phone Call

The last week with Sebastian has been a whirlwind of romance. I know this isn't what real relationships are like all the time, but I cherish the moments while they last, knowing at the very least we are creating memories I can savor for a lifetime, regardless of where we end up when fall comes.

Right now, I'm enjoying a foot massage by the skilled doctor as we watch re-runs of old sitcoms and drink wine. His fingers are strong, and he knows just where to put pressure at the base of my feet. I smile at him as I take another sip of my drink. "If life as a world-class pediatric heart surgeon no longer satisfies, you could always make a living as a masseuse."

He smiles back at me, his eyes happy and face so beautiful it makes me breathless. "Thanks, but I'm good. You, however, are welcome to these hands whenever you want."

He tucks my feet to the side and leans his body over mine until we are face to face, our bodies draped over the couch. In the background, a soundtrack offers  canned laughs as the main character says something self-deprecating and funny. I ignore them and focus on the man in front of me.

"I like having exclusive access to those hands," I say.

Propping himself on one arm, he uses his free hand to unbutton the pajama top I'm wearing. "And I like having access to these." His hand slides over one breast, then the other, my nipples hardening at his touch, skin shivering with desire.

My phone rings on the table in front of the couch, but I ignore it. It's Tate's ring tone. I'll call him back. After.

It goes silent for a moment as Sebastian brings his mouth to my nipple and sucks.

I arch my back.

My cell phone rings again. Tate. Again.

A twinge of worry forms in the back of my mind, but I push it aside.

When he calls again, I sigh and reach for my phone. "He wouldn't be calling this often if there wasn't something wrong," I say by way of apology for throwing cold water on our sexy times.

"This better be good," I say, answering the phone.

"Kacie, I just got a call from Mom."

My heart speeds up at the sound of Tate's voice. Sad, stressed. "What's wrong?"

"Our grandmother died this morning. The funeral is scheduled for this weekend. We have to go back to Ohio, sis."

I tell him I'll be home shortly and put my phone down. Sebastian frowns, concern written on his face, and sits up. I button up my shirt before telling him what happened. "I have to go. Tate and I will need to make plans to fly home for the funeral."

It all feels distant. Unreal. There's no love lost between me and my grandmother, but still, the thought that she's dead, and that I'll have to go back to my old home, my old life… it all feels… surreal.
