Ivy shook her head. “No. We start here. Just one thing, Kit.”
“Yeah?”
“Don’t ever let me go.”
“Never, Ivy-mine.”
A mob of people surrounded them as they got to their feet. Casey hugged them both. Then Mandy was there. “You’ve always been a part of my family,” she said. “Soon it will be official!”
Blade gave Kit a bear hug, then each of the guys stepped in and welcomed Ivy to the group. She looked dazed as man after man hugged her. When the sheriff was the last to offer his congratulations to them, Kit saw Ivy go still. The sheriff took her hands. The group around them went quiet.
“I hope you can find it in you to forgive me for my part in the pain and trouble that hit you two. I’m glad your hearts are still true.”
Ivy squeezed Sheriff Tate’s hands, but shook her head. “There’s only one way I can forgive you.”
“How’s that?”
“If you agree to give me away when Kit and I get married.”
The sheriff grinned, then sniffled. “Yes, ma’am. I’d be honored.”
Kit’s relief was immediate. He smiled when Ivy hugged the sheriff. Something settled in the middle of his chest, as if the final piece of a puzzle had snapped into place. The group became noisy again, chattering about weddings
—
and honeymoons and things not quite fit for Casey’s wide-open ears. He cleared his throat and shot Val a dark look.
Owen stood next to Kit, observing the gaiety. “I’d like to make something clear,” he said.
“What’s that?”
“You got into the Red Team because you’re a fucking misfit. You had no ties to anyone in the civilian world at the time. You still have a complete inability to stay in a box. It’s how we all got into the team. But families are sacred. I’ll protect your females.” He nodded at the crew. “We’ll all protect the dependents. I don’t want you guys to have to make choices between the team and your families. We’ll find a way to make it work.”
Kit held out his hand and shook with Owen, then hooked thumbs with him and looked him in the eye. “Damn straight. Couldn’t ask for a better life, you know, now that I have all the pieces in place.”
