“Very funny, but I got the talk a few years ago,” I said, letting myself laugh at the whole situation. Just moments before I got my brains fucked out,
some sort of costumed stranger attacked me. And an hour before that I was offered a job that I couldn’t refuse. More was happening in these past few hours than in my whole life.

Before Slade could answer though, the elevator door ringed open and out fell the receptionist. Except she wasn’t like I left her. Her clothes were ripped open and blood was soaking through huge gashes across her chest and arms, it looked like she had just been mauled.

“Oh my God!” I exclaimed, rushing over to help her. Slade ran right behind me, helping bring her over to the chair, blood dripping across the floor behind her. Her breathing was raspy but she was still conscience, which was shocking too me.

“I’ll call the hospital,” I said, once we had her sitting down.

“No. Don’t do that,” Slade said. I looked at him, shock spreading across my face. How could he not want me to call an ambulance?! This girl was about to die from just the blood loss. I mean, I was no doctor, but I knew she wasn’t doing well.

“I’ll heal,” the receptionist said to me, her head falling weakly to her side.

“Fuck that, you’re dying.”  I reached into my purse and pulled out my phone, but before I could even unlock it, Slade grabbed it out of my hand and threw it across the room. I heard it crack against the wall. Well, I fucked up my car and now my phone.

“I’ll buy you a new one.” Slade said, no doubt noticing my expression.

“Can someone please explain to me what the fuck is going on?!” I demanded, noticing that the girl’s wounds were starting to slow their bleeding. Sure enough, it looked like she was healing right before my eyes.

“I was able to scare him off, Slade. But I’m sure the rest of the pack wasn’t too far off.” She said, ignoring my question. I turned to Slade, who was now rummaging through his desk. To my surprise, as if I could be anymore surprised today, he pulled out an onyx black
hand-gun. I stayed glued to the spot, not sure that the hell was going on. There was one thing I knew though, and that was that my pepper-spray wasn’t going to be useful anymore.

“Nicole, you just walked right into the middle of a pack war. You’ve ever seen werewolves in movies?”
He said, finally turning his attention back to me. That’s it, I thought, Slade had officially lost his mind. Well, for all I knew he may have never had a mind in the first place.

“Yes. I’ve
read Twilight, nor do I live under a rock. But what does that have to do… you’re not suggesting… Wait, what’s going on?” I said, looking from Slade to the receptionist, who was now getting up off the chair. I was astonished to see all her wounds were now closed, the bleeding completely stopped.

“Well, we’re not exactly like Twilight. But yes, we are an ancient race of powerful creatures that have been waging a war between families since the
beginning. I’m sorry for dragging you into this, I wasn’t expecting an attack today. I will understand if you want to leave here today and forget about everything that happened.” Slade said, filling the gun up with shiny silver bullets as he gave me the spiel, as though this wasn’t completely out of this fucking world.

“Veronica, now that you’re healed,
shift for her.” He said, turning to Veronica who nodded at his command. And if my world hadn’t been completely fucked before that moment, it was now. I watched with open eyes and horror as Veronica’s body shimmered in front of me. It was like my vision was blinking out as I looked at her, a weird mirage effect taking over. Underneath the blur, I could see her body changing, I could hear her bones shifting and cracking, I could smell a musk fill the air. And just like that, the weird blur that filled my vision cleared and before me was no longer the annoying blonde receptionist. Instead was a canine-humanoid that stood at about six feet, her hunched shoulders fallen down towards long and menacing arms ending in dangerously sharp claws. Her whole body was now covered in fur and her face ended in a snout that revealed deadly canines underneath. She was a fucking werewolf.

“Holy shit,” was all I could say before the blood rushed out of my head
. I grabbed my purse and stumbled backwards, away from the creature that stood before me. Fear was starting to overtake me. I looked at Slade, expecting him to shoot her, to stop the danger and just say this was all a huge joke. But he didn’t. He just watched me stumble backwards towards the elevator. His amber eyes held a sort of sadness behind them, as though he didn’t want to see me run away from something straight out of my nightmares.

“Goodbye, Nicole.” Was all he said, as I ran into the elevator. I frantically pressed on the ground floor button, tears starting to fall down my face. The door couldn’t close fast enough, before I fell back and held myself up on the railing inside the elevator. I was trying so hard not to pass out. I couldn’t even comprehend anything that just happened. One minute I was having the best sex of my life, the next I was staring right at a creature from a horror movie.

The elevator door rang open and I ran out, going straight for the door. I reached for the handle and was almost out, when something ran up from behind me and slammed my head against the door. My world went black and my body went limp. I was defenseless against my attacker as my body crumpled downwards too the floor.

I was so close to escaping, to leaving this all behind me. Little did I know, I was about to be thrown right into the center of it
all.
