ll this might be a lot to absorb, and some of it might be a little tough to swallow, but you might want to try some of the things I’m suggesting here, to see if your life works a little better. I’m not going to live forever, so I won’t know if you’ve tried it and it worked for you, but I suspect that it will take you to the person you might be better off with, rather than to the person you’re about to jump off with, whom you know isn’t right for you.
I want people to have more fun in their relationships, but I also think this idea of not living your life fully because you are obsessed with getting a relationship or working on the one you’re in, is a real waste of your time and energy. You get only this one life. So I say make it as full and complete and rich in experience and feeling and creativity and love as possible. Keep on developing
yourself, and don’t do it “in the meantime”; do it now, for you. For yourself.
Only by being fulfilled as a person are you going to avoid expecting someone else to provide all that for you. You will then have the perspective necessary to be true to yourself and say, “I’m okay if I don’t want to be married” or “I don’t need a relationship” or “I just want to date” or “I’m into serial monogamy” or “I mess around when I feel like it” or just have the occasional booty call, because you have all these other things going on in your life that are full of love and value and that occupy your heart and your time and are important to you. A romantic relationship is fun and can add a lot to your life, but think of it as the whipped cream on top of the sundae and not the whole sundae.
And that’s all folks!
Thanks to Tommy, who heard everything… endlessly.
