Elle blinks at me, concern etched on her face. “Leah. I couldn’t carry you back on my own. My dad’s coming.”

“Elle.” I cough, my throat dry as ashes.

“What happened to you?”

Too much. Too much to say. I merely whimper, too worn out to talk.

“Don’t worry, you don’t have to tell me now. You’re going to be fine. My dad’s a genius. You know, he found a way to stop the tattoo from hurting me? Whatever Jared did to you, you’re going to be fine.”

Jared. Cas. Oh, God.

I screw up my eyes, hot tears spilling over.

“Leah, you’re scaring me.”

“Sorry,” I choke out. “Is everyone at the base okay?”

“I thought
you
were dead!” Elle’s crying now, her arms wrapped around me. “You and Cas left and then there were earthquakes and… I thought it was the end.”

“It almost was.” Smiling’s painful, but the corner of my mouth lifts all the same. “I’m so glad you’re all right. All of you. But what was that about the tattoos?”

“My dad made up some kind of substance to counter it.” She lifts her sleeve. The red mark’s still there, stark and vivid, but no longer bleeding.

“What…?”

“Um. Leah, this might sound weird, but he used your blood.”

My blood?
When did he even get that? The nurse, Sandra, did take a sample of my blood when I first arrived at the base. My blood is more than human. It’s Transcendent. Because…

I think of Jared’s experiments with fiends’ blood and suppress a shudder. I can’t tell her about that. Not now.

A cool breeze drifts past, making me shiver. Elle looks at me curiously. Her innocent expression twists the knot in my chest.

“My dad’s coming.”

The outline of a figure’s walking towards us. Murray. I glance back at the divide, my chest knotting again. What do I say to him, knowing his brother’s still out there, and Cas…?

Despite everything, I know what I have to do.

I wasn’t made to live. I was made to die.
I don’t believe his words, not for an instant. There’s no question. I have to take the fight back to Jared. And I have to save Cas.

Sunlight bathes the earth, filling me with a new surge of hope.

I will save him.

About the Author

Emma is the author of the Alliance series, the Darkworld series, and the Indestructible trilogy.

Emma spent her childhood creating imaginary worlds to compensate for a disappointingly average reality, so it was probably inevitable that she ended up writing speculative fiction with magic and monsters. She lives in the middle of England, but dreams of exploring the Multiverse. When she's not immersed in her own fictional worlds, Emma works as a freelance editor and proofreader and reads an improbable number of books.
