Stroking Hailey’s back, Jared held her close and said with a groan, “But nothing will give me more nightmares and more lusty dreams than the sight of this woman striding out of the forest with her gun raised, threatening to put a bullet in Janko’s pea brain.”

Hailey’s colleagues roared their approval and laughed when Jared added, “Damn, Valkyrie, the Avenger’s blonde goddess, couldn’t have made a better or more timely entrance. Especially since Janko was about to put out my eyes with a burning poker, and then move on to other critical body parts.”

The groans and angry murmurs confirmed that the hardened police force knew they had been within minutes of seeing their hero die a hideously painful death.

Jake stepped forward and put a big arm around Jared and Hailey. His stern jaw and glittering eyes spoke to his banked anger.

“I don’t have to tell any of you how close we came to losing Jared. The Judge is right. If Officer Michels hadn’t realized something was up with the DC women—and tagged their van then followed them—there is no way we could have gotten there in time. When Hailey called and told me where they were and that she was right behind them, I gave her a direct order to stand down and wait for us to arrive. To my everlasting gratitude the ‘little rookie’ as Jared calls her, disobeyed my order and singlehandedly confronted a gang of twenty armed men.”

Jake took a moment to deal with his obvious emotion, then added, his voice quavering, “Brave and smart and insubordinate, a real triple threat. Hailey’s distraction saved my brother. But they…they both could have been killed….”

A heavy silence fell over the room, underscoring the emotional tsunami swamping the hushed crowd.

Jake turned to Hailey. Making an effort to lighten the tension, he said with a mock frown, “At some point, say a hundred years from now, Officer Michels, I will let you know what happens to rookies, or any officers of mine, who disobey a direct order from their commander.”

Jared broke into the relieved laughter and challenged his brother.

“How about you let me handle punishing the little rookie, Jake? I plan to take her to our family cabin for a week…or so. As long as it takes me to teach her the error of her ways and show her how the Justice Brothers keep their women in line.”

In the raucous hoots that followed his provocative assertion, Jared tipped up Hailey’s chin and swiped at the tear on her cheek. Gazing into her eyes, his voice was gruff.

“And while we’re at it, Bro, I think it’s time that we find a different name for this outrageous
and
courageous young woman. ‘Little Rookie’ doesn’t cut it. How about Jared’s Avenger instead?”
