Alannah didn’t shrink back like she used to.
In fact, she stuck out her hand first and introduced herself,
smiling and making direct eye contact.

They eventually made their way to their
reserved table and sat together listening to the musicians before
he was called away to the bar. He excused himself and left her
alone, planning to wrap up the meeting as soon as possible.

He, Devin, and their frat brother discussed
the particulars of the club and the potential spots in each city
where they could open them. Trenton would put up the majority of
the money.

“Sounds good, but of course I’ll need to see
everything in writing, like when we opened this place,” he
said.

Devin nodded. “Of course. Wanted to make sure
you were interested first. We’ll put a plan together over the next
few weeks.”

“Perfect.”

They all shook hands.

Trenton’s other frat brother looked in the
direction of where he’d been sitting with Alannah. “Hey, isn’t that
you, man?”

Trenton’s eyes traveled to the table, and he
saw a man bent over, speaking to Alannah. She shook her head and
smiled politely, but he didn’t give up. He whispered in her ear
again, hand braced on the back of her chair, standing way too
close.

Trenton tensed, wanting to barge over there
and tell the guy to get the hell away from her, but he held fast.
She laughed, shook her head again, and the guy finally left.

She lifted her gaze, and when she saw him
looking, she smiled and gave a little wave. The tension left his
body. He was the luckiest man in the world, and he knew it.

She belonged to him. Not in an archaic,
proprietary way, but as part of a whole. They belonged to each
other. Always had.

He smiled back at her and answered his frat
brother’s question truthfully and without reservation.

“Yeah, that’s me.”
