David and Connie Story

Excerpt:

It’s crazy that I’m anxious to come to work today. It’s not that I don’t love my job as a nurse, but lately I’ve had a reason—patient in room 303. He’s the most handsome man I’ve ever seen, and I talk to him daily, but there’s just one big problem. He’s in a coma.

He came here three weeks ago, beaten, bruised, stabbed and shot. There was no sort of identification on him and over the course of the three weeks, no one came to claim him. Every day I hoped that no woman would come to claim him as hers.

The moment I arrive I’m working on three other patients when I really want to be with him.

“Connie! Hurry, girl! He’s awake and I think he’s looking for you.”

“What do you mean he’s looking for me?”

“The woman’s voice he’s been hearing. He knows it’s none of us, so it has to be you.”

My heart’s pounding out of control and I’m trying to calm it. Some of the nurses and the doctors have teased me over the past few weeks. They say I’ve fallen in love with a that doesn’t tell me to be quiet while he watches the game.

I rush to the room, but straightening my scrubs and hair frantically before I step into the room.

His eyes are glued to the door. Over the three weeks we haven’t been able to shave him because of all the head injuries, but he looks so handsome with a long dark beard and longer hair. He smiles at me and I know he’s waiting for me to say something.

“I’m so happy to see you’ve woken up, sir,” I stutter.

“It’s you. You’re the voice in my head. What’s your name? For that matter what’s mine?”

“You don’t know who you are?” I’m by his side and taking his hand and stroking it. I can’t believe he doesn’t remember who he is. Well I can believe it considering the physical damage to his head, but it’s like he’s still a big mystery to me.

“I’m sorry, but we don’t know. You can’t remember anything?”

“Just your voice.” He takes his other hand and covers my hand trapping it between his.

“Don’t worry, we’ll figure it out.”
