three National Book Critics Circle awards, two
PEN/Faulkner Awards, the Edith Wharton
Citation for Fiction, the William Dean Howells
Medal of the American Academy of Arts and
Letters, and the presidentially conferred National
Humanities Medal. He lives in New York.
