“Yeah, I accidentally cut
his throat while you fought Myurr.” I murmured, “Let’s go to my
house in the city. I haven’t been home in days, and I really want
to be surrounded by my things.”
I sat up pulling away from
him. He quietly ran a hand down my back.
“Okay, when do you want to
leave? Now?” he asked and I nodded.
We asked Angus to watch
over Jennifer, before we left to make the long drive back to my
house in silence.
As soon as I entered the
kitchen I felt better. I opened the freezer and peered at my frozen
stock of Milky Ways. Just making sure they were still there. I
closed it immediately when Gabriel walked in. No need letting him
know that I had a stash.
Gabriel had called ahead.
So his men knew we were coming, and met us in the living room. I
walked by all of them without so much as a nod and entered the
office. Closing, the door I leaned back against it and just
breathed in the familiar scents of the room, home, I sighed.
Walking over to the bookshelf, I ran a hand over the old
volumes.
My hand seemed to stop by
itself on one of the oldest volumes. I pulled it off the shelf and
red the title, ’Uncommon Beasts and Devils’. I moved to the desk
and started searching the records for Myurr. The text was old and
hard to read, but I found him. It told me remarkably little about
the creature that I didn’t already know. It gave a description of
the beast, knew that. It list some of his powers, knew some of
that. It told me where he was from, didn’t know that. He lived in a
mid-level plane of hell, and was considered a secondary devil. This
was the most valuable item in the book. I could find him, I could
call him, and I could kill him.
I closed the book and sat
back in my seat. I sorted through this new information. This was
excellent. I replaced the book and then opened the French doors
leading to the backyard. I could feel my mood lighten as I moved
around the yard. I spun around with the wind, with one phrase
running through my mind, “I can call him, and I can kill
him.”
“Branwen,” Gabriel said my
name so softly I almost didn’t hear it.
I smiled and held out my
hand to him.
“Come dance with me,
Cullen.” I invited him.
He moved so fast I hardly
saw him move. Then I was in his arms crushed up against his broad
chest.
“I love the way you say my
name.” His voice was husky. Our kiss was a long, deep leisurely
exploration of each other. “You are feeling better, my love. What
has changed your mood?” He asked and ran a thumb over my tattooed
cheek.
We swayed to the music of
the wing chimes.
“I guess just being back
here.” I told him. “Are your men watching us?”
“I sent them back to the
main house. I thought, from the way your acting that you might want
to stay the night here.” He told me.
We danced a slow waltz
around the yard
.
I laughed out loud in delight, and then sang him an old
Celtic love song from our past. We made love on the ground. In the
middle of the circle I had created so many years ago.
The next morning I called
Angus to check on Jennifer and to let them know that we wouldn’t be
back until the next day. I wanted one day, completely alone with
Gabriel, just one day. I didn’t think that was too much to ask
for.
We worked out the key
elements for his tattoo spell. Basically, it would be the same as
mine, but he only wanted it on both of his wrist and on his left
side. It took me a couple of tries, but I finally got it right. We
stood in the bathroom looking at the tattoo in the
mirror.
“I don’t know how the
healing will work with the spell only being in these spots, but in
theory, it should work the same.” I told him running my hand over
the new tattoo on his side.
It covered the skin from
the hip to the waist and made bracers on his forearms, in the black
swirling lines.
“If it doesn’t work the
way you want it to, we can tweak it bit until it does.” I told
him.
“Teach me how to use it.”
He said moving his arms back and forth to get a better look at the
markings.
“Simply think dagger and
snap your wrist.” I said. I snapped my wrist and the black dagger
appeared. “Just like the sword.” I sat on the counter top watching
him practice with his new toy.
Stepping between my legs
he pulled me to him and kissed me.
“My thanks love, for the
new weapons.” He said against my mouth.
“Oh, I think you can do
better than that.” I told him and wrapped both of my arms around
his neck. “Want to try again?”
I wrapped my legs around
his waist pressing us tightly together
.
He was more than happy to show me
how much he liked the new tattoos.
We spent the rest of our
time together watching movies, talking, playing, and just enjoying
each other’s company. I couldn’t have asked for a better day with
him. No pressures from work, and no demands from other people, no
one but us.
Reluctantly I left my
house to go back with Gabriel to the main house. On the drive, back
we stopped for gas. I filled up on Milky Ways and
coffee.
“If you need more time we
could take a trip somewhere, just you and I.” Gabriel told me once
we were back on the road.
When I looked at him, he
gave me a wink
.
I
shrugged eating my Milky Way.
Did he seriously want to
have a conversation now, while I was eating a Milky Way?
“If you want to go
somewhere, I’m game.” I told him and gazed out the window eating
some more candy
.
Gabriel reached over and
took my candy bar away from me. I jerked around and gaped at him in
disbelief.
“Now that I have your full
attention, my love, I was asking you. If you had someplace you
wanted to go, all alone with your mate.” He repeated.
“And I said sure. Now give
me back my candy bar.” I demanded and reached for my
candy.
He moved it just out of my
reach and to my shock and dismay. He ate what was left. I narrowed
my eyes at him. Oh, he would pay for that.
“It’s okay I have more.” I
told him childishly.
He laughed and snagged my
hand.
“I’ll check into some
trips and see what is available.” He said before kissing the back
of my hand.
If you’re still alive in
the morning, maybe I’ll go.
“Is Jennifer and Angus at
the house?” I asked him.
“Yes, they arrived this
evening.” He replied.
That was fantastic news.
Jennifer could help me plan out his death. She met us at the front
door when we got home. She asked if I was feeling better and what
we did while we were gone. When she took a deep breath I handed her
a candy bar and answered all her questions. We walked up the stairs
together. Gabriel stood at the bottom of the stairs watching us. I
told Jennifer that we needed to plot his death for eating my Milky
Way. She agreed to help. I patted her on the back and threw him a
feral smile from over my shoulder. It was good to be
home.
Chapter 26
Gabriel managed to arrange
an appointment with Tayton Danker two days later. I dressed up for
the occasion and wore a dark-purple dress. Gabriel dressed in beige
slacks and a dark polo shirt. We were by no means the belles of the
ball, when we arrived at the Devils Blood night club on Main Street
at midnight. It was a high end night club and everybody who thought
they were someone was there. The waiting line to get in wrapped
around the building and I did enjoy the looks of death as we were
let in without an argument.
As we followed our escort
through the club to a private meeting room in the back, I glanced
around
.
It was
vampire heaven. People dressed to kill and everybody wanted to be a
vampire. I had looked the place up when Gabriel told me we would
meet Tayton here.
Tayton Danker owned the
well-known vampire club, and it was the hottest club in our humble
little town.
“Have you ever been here
before?” I asked Gabriel as we followed the hostess.
“No.” He answered, “I was
about to ask you the same thing.”
“No, but if we don’t like
what we hear from Tayton, we could always come back with a pack of
wolves and have a party.” I told him were the hostess could hear
me.
She almost stumbled on her
five inch heels, but she caught herself. I grinned at Gabriel. The
private room was expensively decorated in gold and reds. I hated
it. A man was sitting on a red couch
.
He was dress in an expensive red
suit, yuck. He muted the two TV screens he had been watching, and
he got to his feet as we walked in. He had long shoulder length
brown hair and his brown eyes looked almost too large against his
very pale, handsome face.
I watched him move as he
walked towards us and offered us his long fingered hand. Gabriel
shook hands with him. I declined the offer, using the mate position
to my advantage. The smile he gave me was perfect like the rest of
him. I wanted to hit him in his perfect face. I didn’t like this
man. The power coming off of him was old and dirty. I wanted a
shower.
“Can I get you something
to drink?” he asked in a British accent
.
“No thank you, I don’t
think we will be here that long.” Gabriel replied.
“I am pleased to meet both
of you. I have heard so much about both of you.” He said motioning
us to sit on the couch while he sat across from us in a large red
winged back chair.
“Really? Is that why you
sent two of your baby vamps to attack me in public?” I asked and
sat down next to Gabriel on the couch.
I figured I could move
just as fast as Tayton, if I had too.
“That was a small
misunderstanding.” He replied with just a hint of a
grin.
“Who had the
misunderstanding? The jerk that challenged me or the idiot that
attacked me in the parking lot?” I asked him.
Gabriel leaned back into
the couch and rested an arm around my shoulders.
“McKenna, the whole thing
was a simple misunderstanding. I just wanted them to follow you and
tell me what you did.” He replied and leaned forward a little. “I
had the most interesting meeting with an old friend of
yours.”
“Did she tell you to
follow me around?” I asked him.
This was boring and I
hated talking to him.
“No, she told me to make
sure that none of my vampires bothered you. She said she had a
claim on you. She is very old and powerful. However, did you meet
her, my dear McKenna?” Tayton asked me with an odd gleam in his
eyes.
I leaned forward, “I
pissed her off so long ago
.
I don’t remember Tayton and don’t call me my dear
again. Your goons threatened the lives of the children I had with
me and that still pisses me off.” I told him. “If I catch any of
your goons following me or mine, I’ll kill it and then I’ll come
knocking on your door.” I warned him. “There is a reason why she
wants to play with me Tayton. You don’t want to get in the middle
of our little conflict.”
That odd gleam in his eyes
was growing.
“You come into my club and
threaten me.” He said and laughed out loud. “She did say that you
were ballsy, but I didn’t think that you would be
crazy.”
“You have no idea how
crazy I can get.” I told him and stood up. “You owe me for the
damages at the restaurant.” I said pulling a card from my pocket.
“This is the total cost for all the repairs and I do expect full
payment to be made to this account in the morning.”
I dropped the card on the
gold table in front of the couch.
“If not, Tayton, I will be
back, and I don’t think I have to tell you how unpleasant our next
little chat will be.” I warned him.
Tayton never moved from
his seat, which was smart of him. I was a little edgy at the moment
and wanted to leave.
“I will see that the
deposit is made in the morning.” He assured me.
I nodded and offered
Gabriel my hand, time to go. Taking my hand he rose and we headed
for the door, meeting over.
“I can see why she wants
you, McKenna.” Tayton said decidedly. “I wonder who will win this
time.”
“Just stay out of the way
Tayton.” I said.
“I will be watching
McKenna, I am curious now.” There was something in his
voice.
I regarded him from over
my shoulder. I could see he was interested in me. I would have to
face him again, Willow or no. He wanted to make me his.
“Tayton, if you or any of
your servants come near my mate again, I’ll slaughter you and your
flock.” Gabriel threatened the vampire.
He too had seen the
look
.
With these
last words, we left the club and headed home. As we drove to the
house, I stared out the window and knew that my time was limited.
Somewhere out there was a hellishly pissed off vampire with my name
on her lips.
