“Emma said that he didn’t suffer. Did he?” Landon
told her no, not at all. “That day he hurt you, nearly killed you, I decided
that I was done with him. I hate to admit it, and I will only to you, but I’m
glad that it’s done. A long trial and all that went with it would have hurt all
of us, including the Douglas family and Palmer.”
He told her what Mason had said about moving in
with them for a time. She agreed it might not be so bad. “I don’t think I’d
want to go back to the house just yet. There are so many things there that
would remind us of Dirk.”
And not any of them good memories. Landon was
finally at peace with what had happened. That wasn’t to say in a few weeks he
wouldn’t think about Dirk and hurt some, but for now, with his feelings
validated somewhat by Katie, he was better. Going into the house, they caught
sight of Emma and Mason on the deck behind the house and stood watching them.
“He’s going to convert her to a cat soon.” Katie
nodded. “She’ll be his match in all things, he told me. The leader of his leap,
small as it is, but she’ll be a leader too.”
“She’ll be very good at it, I think. Strong
as she is, their children are going to be so much fun to see.” Landon couldn’t
wait to hold a grandchild in his arms. “Emma said that she and Mason were going
to try when things settle around the ranches. Did you know that he and the
other ranchers are going together to buy up the Mitchell ranch? Seems Gordon
has run into some financial issues. His wife caught him with his young
secretary, and she’s taking him to the cleaners.”
“Man should learn where to keep his dick.” Katie
smacked him on the arm and told him to behave. Before he could tell her he was,
they watched as Mason went from a man standing there to a big cougar in a
single heartbeat. “Holy shit.”
Mason moved to Emma and rubbed his head on
her legs. When she took off running to the woods, Mason turned and looked at
the two of them. Landon felt like a deer in the headlights. As soon as Mason
yawned, showing off the biggest teeth he’d ever seen, Mason took off to the
woods too. Landon looked at Katie.
“She’ll be fine.” He nodded at his wife. “More
than fine. He won’t ever let anything or anyone hurt her again.”
