Along the way, they noted an old woman, dressed in black, on the road. She stood at the side of the thoroughfare and stared at them as they approached, as if she’d been waiting for them.

“Gwenith!” Morgana cried. “Our spirit witch!” Overcome with joy, she urged her horse forward. Their horses quickly closed the distance separating the travelers from the woman. Gwenith looked up at them and smiled. She nodded, as if in satisfaction.

“Gwenith,” Morgana said, “we are all so happy to see you again. We owe you so much, more than we can ever say.”

“Let me add my thanks to that of my wife.” Keir dipped his hand into a leather moneybag attached to his belt. “There is not enough gold in any kingdom to pay you for all you have done, but please accept this as a gesture of our gratitude.” He handed her many gold coins, enough to last her for years.

She waved her hand. “Why, sir, what need have I for money? It is useless where I come from, but I thank you for your generosity, just the same. The only reason for my presence here is to assure myself that all of you are safe and happy.” Her look covered all of them, and a smile creased her aged face. “I see that you are, and that makes me happy.” With that statement, she disappeared, like a puff of smoke.

Keir and Ferris looked around, from right to left and behind them. “How could she just disappear?” Keir asked, frowning in bewilderment.

Awash with love and tenderness for her husband, Morgana touched his hand. “Darling, can you not accept that she is a sitheach who dwells in the Otherworld?”

He shook his head in confusion. “I remember you said that before, but I suppose I had trouble believing it.”

“Sir,” Ferris said from behind them, “she did the same thing on the shore, when she told me about the mistress inside the whale.”

“Ah, yes.” Keir smiled at his wife. “Let us go on then and complete our journey. Thanks to Gwenith and all the gods for bringing you to me. . . .”

Days later, they reached Glennamin, where Keir’s family welcomed Morgana in their splendid castle. In the coming weeks and months, stretching on into years, the king and queen treated her like their own daughter. From then on, Morgana and Keir never knew a moment’s unhappiness. They had many fine children whose descendants rule Glennamin to this very day.
