“I’m not sure I can ever top tonight,” he said, leaning into my neck. He snuck a nibble on the top of my ear, the sensitive tip that sent shivers anew run down my back.

“We’ll have to try.” I narrowed my eyes a bit, smirking with the challenge. Our bodies seemed to glow under the dim green club lights, the musky scent of sweaty bodies and forgotten standards, old leather jackets mixed with designer t-shirts that cost more than anyone should actually pay for a t-shirt. I gripped a bit of Alexander’s shirt, the white one he had put on, not caring about the leather jacket.

He handed me a glass of water, drops of condensation sliding down.

“You know, you’re dangerous.”

“How so?”

“Just look at you.” His hands circled me, emphasizing the word “you”.

“Please, you’re the star. Soon you’ll be having groupies.” He shook his head, keeping his eyes locked on mine.

“I’ll turn all of them away, just for you.”

I bit my bottom lip, excited by what he was suggesting as I tilted my head, letting my silver earring get lost in my hair.

It would have been a perfect moment. Something both of us would have remembered for months, maybe even years, to come. Everything was what it should have been, until Sadie burst between us, slamming one hand onto the bar, her many rings undoubtedly scratching the surface. She looked like a falcon that just dove in on its mouse, clutching it between her vicious talons. She must have stuck around after Alexander had kicked her out, drunkenly clinging onto the shoulder of a desperate man, thinking he was going to get it in with her. Then, when I had made my reappearance and she was slightly more sober, she decided to pounce.

“Tell me what’s going on between you and Blake.”

I stammered, not knowing how to respond. Alexander, bless his hot soul, came around the sadistic Sadie and once again stuck an arm out, barring Sadie from passing. Of course, all she had to do was stick a taloned hand out and latch onto my hair, but we would cross that bridge when we got there.

“I can assure you, nothing is going on between them.”

“Oh yeah? How the fuck do you know that?”

“I know his schedule inside out, I probably know more about him than you do. I know who his clients are, who he takes meetings with, who his lunches are with. Sadie, trust me, I know.”

I looked at Alexander, his words sinking in. I couldn't be sure if it was just me over analyzing things, dissecting his words in that nasty habit of mine. But, it was true. He really did have access to everything of Blakes. He needed to. So could he possibly know about me?

If he did, he certainly wasn’t letting on now.

“I’m calling bullshit. He isn’t even picking up his phone. Why is he acting like he saw a fucking ghost? Explain that, Alexander.” She was getting loud now, the alcohol still pumping in her veins but I could tell that the anger was becoming stronger. The clouded speech was clearing, making way for something more pointed. She still had to hold herself up on the bar, but she was definitely coming back.

What made it worse? Alexander couldn’t explain it.

And people were starting to take notice. I could see them from the side of my eye. They weren’t dancing so much anymore, some were just milling about, whispering as loud as the could to still be heard over the music. They saw the overly done up Sadie, in her skimpy designer dress, no doubt recognizing her from Blake’s show, or her own failed spinoff. I was beginning to envision the reality show style blowup now.

And it wasn’t going to be good.

The last thing any of us needed was for pictures of me floating around and connected with Blake’s wife, in a fight none the less. I was sure that would get the rumor mill running on high gear trying to cover that story. Sadie was known for her drunken tirades against people like PETA, but she never got into an altercation. An actual fist fight.

“Exactly, you fucking bitch.” She slapped the bar to add emphasis. Someone to the left had pulled out their phone.

“Let’s go outside,” Alexander said, trying to diffuse the situation as best he could.

“No. I’m handling this now.” She grabbed the nearest Rum and Coke and hurled it at my face, the glass missing my forehead and slamming against the dark black wall behind me, but the drink had gotten all over my face, soaking my hair and forcing my eyes shut.

I could hear audible gasps over the loud music. Alexander jostled in front of me, no doubt stopping Sadie from a full on assault. I couldn’t see what was going on but I felt Alexander take most of it, being bounced back onto me as he absorbed the blows.

Was that a flash?

“We need to go.” Alexander grabbed my wrist and pulled, dragging me through the gawking crowd, already fighting for who go to be the first to hit Youtube and snatch all the views. I rubbed most of the alcohol off my face, my pores stinging from the assault.

“Crazy bitch.” I stretched my neck as we made our way out of the front doors and onto the street, white light beaming down at us from a street lamp hanging just above. Thankfully, Alexander had a car already waiting for him, posted there as the night was winding down and closing time was approaching. We slinked into the back, melting into the black leather, my soggy mop of hair sticking to my shoulders. I could smell the alcohol seeping into my dress.

My shoulders slumped downwards. What had started out as a perfect night deteriorated into something I would rather forget. I had been humiliated and now pictures were going to show up everywhere.

Give them five months to realize that innocent girl getting attacked by the jealous celebrity wife was pregnant, with no father in sight.

This was bad. I started to think about turning to Jason, maybe asking him to talk to Blake. They worked together, they had to have some sort of camaraderie. But then I remembered everything Jason was going through and couldn’t bring myself to have him bear more. He already had to worry about who was after him.

Who knew where I lived.

Oh no. No, no, no.

I never put those two things together. Whoever was after my brother, they had followed him to my house. They were the ones who threw a rock through my window, evidently wanting to send a message. Suddenly, I didn’t feel safe being alone.

Which was why I was so internally grateful when Alexander looked at me and said, “want to stay at my place tonight?”

I smiled and pretended to think about it for a second. Looking my most bashful, I nodded and shrugged my shoulders.

Why not?

CHAPTER ELEVEN

HE OPENED THE DOOR TO his one bedroom apartment located in Los Feliz, the hip part of Los Angeles. It was an upcoming neighborhood that held the best coffeeshops and german sausage places around. His apartment was basic, not having too many frills and decorations. I noticed he did have a pretty nice TV with all the newest gaming consoles that had just hit the market.

He hung his keys on the holder that was nailed into the wall and sat down on the couch, taking off his shoes and throwing them under the side table. I walked over, taking a seat next to him and taking off my heels, which were close to constricting my circulation clean off.

“What a night,” I said, allowing myself to lean back and actually relax.

“I’m still happy you were by me the whole night.” He leaned back next to me, a hand resting on my exposed thigh. I unconsciously lowered my dress a bit, meeting his hand on my leg.

“What do you think is going to happen tomorrow?”

“I think we’re going to wake up. I’m going to cook you an incredible breakfast. I’m going to make love to you on my dinner table. And then we’ll see where we go from there.” His smile told me he had every intention in filling those promises, and that last one interested me very much. It just wasn’t exactly what I was talking about.

“Oh, you mean the photos?”

I nodded, thinking about what’s going to happen when the news leaks. I didn’t think it was going to be earth shattering, stop what you're doing, type news, but I did think it was going to get some attention.

“I guess I’ll have to do damage control. I’m actually surprised Blake hasn’t called me yet. Usually when he has a meltdown, I would be the first one lined up to take his wrath.” He cocked a thick eyebrow.

“The only reason I put up with his bullshit is for the money. He pays me really well. Plus he has connections too.”

That was something else to admire about him. He was willing to do what it took so that he could see his dream come true, and so far it seemed like it was happening. Meanwhile, I had to deal with a secret pregnancy and now psycho wife.

I readjusted myself on the couch, suddenly feeling self-conscious. Even though this incredible man had been inside me just moments before, I began to feel a little bit of self-doubt creep in. I felt it poison my veins like a trojan horse sneaking in and unloading its cargo. My logical side told me I had no reason to be down on myself, which was pushed aside by the guilt of lying to him.

“Well, I don’t think you’ll need to put up with it for much longer.” I tried to steer my attention towards something else, but my restless hand kept finding itself on top of my tummy. “Do you have any shorts I can borrow?”

“Yeah, let me get you a pair.” He got up and walked down a small hallway to where I assumed his room was. He came back with a pair of navy blue gym shorts hanging from a finger. He held it out to me and placed a large white shirt on top. I gave him a quick thanks and changed, taking the time in the bathroom to collect myself and remember that I was trying to have one good night, just one, before everything in my life was turned upside down.

I came back out, a large bow tied at the front of his gym shorts in a weak effort to try and hold them up. He had conveniently handed me a shirt with a pretty deep v-neck, which I kept trying to pull back at first, but soon gave up and just let it fall naturally, exposing the tops of my breasts.

“God, you’re so fucking sexy.” He grabbed my hips and pulled me down on to him, not even giving me a chance to sit back down on the couch. I sat back, feeling his breaths lift his muscular chest and carry me with it.

His fingers found my arm, circling my wrist then trailing up my forearm, tickling the thin hairs. I melted into him, not wanting to separate from him. I didn’t want to think about the fact that it was almost a fact.

It was a known fact that Alexander was going to hate me.

I pushed up and slid over to the end of the couch, not looking to see if Alexander appeared confused or disappointed. “Do you think she’ll still come after me?” I wanted to deflect the topic again. And besides, I was actually nervous as to what Sadie was going to do next. If she thought, if she knew, then Alexander may be one of the only people to predict her actions. After all, he was connected pretty deep.

“She’s all bark. People tune her out more often than they listen to her.” He looked down towards his feet. “It’s Blake I’m worried about.”

“Why?” His name didn’t twist my gut like it used to, now it just sent a quick stab of pain. A reminder that he was still alive, but it was almost becoming clinical now. Maybe it was a defense mechanism, some sort of after effect coming from the shock.

Whatever it was, it worked.

“He's not one to lose control like that. Not even on me, and I’ve fucked up pretty badly before. He’s the type that would walk into a room and expect everyone to like him, right off the bat, just off his smile. When he doesn’t get that, he throws a little tantrum, but always a controlled one.” He flexed his wrist, taking off a thick leather band he had strapped on. “This wasn’t controlled. It wasn’t expected. And now, people are going to see him as a cheater. Sure, there’s no solid proof, but the words are still going to be said.”

I knew it wasn’t Alexander’s intention, but I was beginning to feel even more guilty about this whole mess. I also started feeling scared. He was going to be the scumbag husband, so what did that make me? The pregnant mistress. I already saw all the headlines now, all over the celebrity blogs I usually frequent.

It also made me scared. Why was Blake throwing caution to the wind like that?

“Think he’s going to be in a revenge kind of mood?” I tried making my question sound innocent. I didn’t want Alexander to think I was prying him and trying to use his assistant position as leverage for more information. Even though I sort of was.

“Honestly? I can’t say for sure.” That didn’t make me feel too good.

“Shit. Maybe I should talk to him?”

“About what?” He cocked his head, inviting me to stick my foot further into my mouth.

“The procedure I was looking into,” I said, unable to do anything else but dig my grave even deeper. “Tell him that this was all just a big mix-understanding.”

I tried salvaging whatever I could. Thankfully, Alexander seemed to have been ok with my answer, letting his head fall back and into a checkered pillow. “I’m not sure how that would help things now, though.”

“I’ll see what happens.”

As much as I hated to do it, I needed to calm Blake down. With the pictures of me and his wife arguing now out there, the threat I represented was suddenly blown up to a much larger scale. Now there was a timeline and people could draw some clearer conclusions. It must have scared Blake shitless, so I needed to reassure him that I didn’t want to blow up like that. Everything needed to remain cool and calm.

“Want to go to bed?’ I asked, more a suggestion. Every muscle in my body thanked him when he nodded his head, getting up from the couch and leading me into his bedroom. It wasn’t anything extravagant either, but his bed was so incredibly comfortable.

I slid in under the comforter and felt his soft pillow sheets glide across my cheeks. The bed smelled like him. A permanent aroma of man and musk, strong oak that made me wet all over again. My knees drew up as my toes got lost in the cold folds of the bed sheets.
