Slipping the key
into the ignition, I started the truck and cautiously pulled out of the garage
in a slight fog of black smoke.  I stopped just outside the garage and paused
to make sure the remote for the garage door opener was working.  I jumped and
bit my tongue when the truck backfired like a cannon going off under my seat.

I rolled my
window down and let my hair tangle in the wind as I drove back to Christian’s
house to get my few belongings.  The truck ran fine.  At least I would be able
to pay Christian back.  He couldn’t have paid more than five hundred dollars
for the thing.  I glanced nervously at the pavement whizzing by under the
rusted out floorboard on the passenger side.  So it had character.  At least I
wouldn’t have to explain to my friends and co-workers where I had gotten the
money for a sports car.

I breathed in
the pine-scented breeze, a wry smile on my face.  I was going to get back on my
feet again.  I would make money using my talents.  That’s what everyone does.
My skill set was just a little bit different than everyone else’s.  So I was
going to work for Henry and Argenou.  It was worth it if I saved a few human
lives along the way.  Cruising along the back roads in my beat up truck with
the wind in my hair and a faint memory of Dominic’s power humming in my skin, I
felt alive.

 I called to
that thing that lived deep inside me.  Glancing down at my hands, I watched a
golden glow creep over my skin.  I smiled wickedly.  Let Argenou and the others
try to test me.  I would show them what I was made of.
