Chapter 11: Will the Real Messiah Please Stand Up?

1. For a more complete discussion of the Daniel 9 prophecy, see Josh McDowell,
The New Evidence That Demands a Verdict
(Nashville: Nelson, 1999), 197–201.

2. Matthew attributes the passage he quotes in 27:9-10 to the prophet Jeremiah, but the passage actually occurs in Zechariah 11:11-13. The apparent discrepancy is resolved when we understand the organization of the Hebrew canon. Hebrew Scriptures were divided into three sections: law, writings, and prophets. Jeremiah came first in their order of prophetic books, and thus Hebrew scholars often found it an acceptable shortcut to refer to the entire collection of prophetic writings by the name of the first book—Jeremiah.
