On the day the book was published I saw Eulalia for the last time. She said, “When the book does its work I'm going back down there to live, Chet. There'll be so much to do. I think my father would have wanted it.”

About three months later a second revolt, almost bloodless this time, broke out in the Parana Republic. For a couple of days it made headlines, but the army cooperated with the revolutionaries and Lequerica was quickly deposed. This time Hipolito Robles was in the forefront of the action. He was named provisional president but did not reach Ciudad Grande in time to prevent an angry mob from lynching Lequerica.

Jack Morley and I had a few drinks to the success of the new government. By then he was no longer mad about the phone call. After our third drink he said:

“You want to know the truth, you s.o.b.? I can't stay mad at you. I envy you too much. Boy, what a life you lead.”

I nodded and raised my glass to him and didn't say anything about the life I led. There was no sense in spoiling it for him, was there?
